Master Bedding updates from Homegoods

Iknow it’s almost Christmas Day, but for those of you who are still home and online surfing the web like me, thanks for stopping by.  I’ve been baking and getting ready to start cooking for real on Thursday, since I’m hosting Christmas dinner for Peter’s family this year.

if you’ve been reading my blog awhile, you’ve seen my master bedroom, but there are some changes going on in there and I’d love your opinions.  I have had a creamy colored matelasse with matching king shams on this bed for 4 years now and I love matelasse, but didn’t love how this one was wearing.  I had put a blue blanket across it from the first and the threads from the blue blanket had “pilled” onto the coverlet and I have never been able to get it all off and looking great again. I’ve washed it and washed it (even tried shaving it) and that little bit is still there in the fibers of the coverlet and it irks me. :)   You can’t see it unless you’re close up on it, but I know it’s there.IMG_8123

So, I’ve been on the lookout for something that could come in and join all the other fabrics on this bed without having to start over. I was really just going to try to find another matelasse and change it out and keep everything else.  I strolled through Homegoods last week, because they always have some great looking linens in there and I spotted this set with a King coverlet/quilt along with 2 shams, all for $39. Now, that’s a deal!  IMG_8118

And I really like it too.  But, I want to make sure it’s not too sweet with the flowery vines on the coverlet.IMG_8113

I’m not a huge floral fan, but a few flowers I can handle.  And it really does sort of mimic the floral vines on the lamps…see.IMG_8105

I want to make sure it doesn’t scream “Country”, since Country is not me at all.  I think it’s really pretty and the color of the blues couldn’t be more perfect with all my fabrics.  I love the texture of the all cotton fabric too.  The coverlet is edged in this dark blue with the striped little flounce, which I really like too.  My friend, Debbie gave it her stamp of approval when she saw it and assured me that it didn’t look Country.

What do you think??IMG_8106

See how perfect the striped ruffle goes with my Calico Corners paisley fabric on the shams?  Couldn’t be a better match.  I love the texture of the white shams too.IMG_8120

I just want to know that it’s still pretty and elegant, but not going Country.

IMG_8133

You are free to offer your opinions.  At only $39 for the whole shebang, I do like that.  I just don’t want it to look like $39, know what I mean. :)   And I really don’t think it does. I’m loving it more every day I see it on the bed.  (special note: the blue paint in the bathroom is not nearly that BRIGHT, there’s a skylight that always electrifies the color with light).

Because someone will ask:   Gold paint color in the bedroom is Sherwin Williams Blonde.

UPDATE:  READ the Comments to see what I’ve decided on this!!  Thanks ALL for chiming in and Merry Christmas!  I’m cooking and chilling today.

(Homegoods is not paying me to say any of this, I just happen to love their store and want to help them stay in business!).

The giveaway winner for List Plan It is:  Pam with CocoMama Congrats to you on the win, I will send your name and email to Jen and she will get you set up for logging on to claim your prize.

Hey friend,

Since you asked for honesty, I liked it better before, but I am a plane-Jane kinda girl. Maybe you could get an all-white quilted set instead of matelasse? I think you lose some of your crisp refreshingness with the busyness of the floral. . . A beautiful room though!

I like the bedding. It might have a little bit of a country look. I think it looks great with your existing pieces, though.
I’ve purchased several quilts for the lake at HomeGoods and/or Marshall’s. Great bargains that look great, too.

Merry Christmas to you and Peter, Rhoda. Wishing you a wonderful 2010!

Hi Rhoda,
I like your new linen. The subtle floral pattern has a nice airy look and the new pieces match your original ones just great; I’d say its a definite keeper!

Thanks also for the chicken pot pie recipe. I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who doesn’t like making her own pie crusts. Pastry intimidates me for some reason.

Wishing you and yours all the happy things this very special holidays brings. Merry Christmans! Sheila

I like it, its pretty and inviting. I do have to agree with the other poster who said it was a country feel :)

I’m not getting a Country feel but a French Country feel to it. I think it works really well with your pillows. The real thing that stands out to me though is that you “love it more every day” you see it on the bed. I think that’s good enough for me as an argument for keeping it.

I have to be honest, I’m not feeling the floral. A bit too country, perhaps for me.

Oooh, I kinda hate this….but I agree…I liked the plain better and I think it is Country feeling. Sorry. You will probably find something you like even more. The room is gorgeous though.

I just found your site and I’d be happy curling up in any corner of it! I love everything!! I think as far as the bedspread goes, I like the plain better, but the floral still looks good.

9 Samantha December 23, 2009 at 9:49 pm

Sorry, although I think it is pretty, it does seem a little country. I prefer the plain one in your home.

I have been enjoying your blog for some time. I truly LOVE this new look. I don’t think it looks country at all….maybe more country French I would say, especially because of the colors. The stripe is perfect with the paisley and to me the light floral look pulls the colors together better than the plain which was more stark. This looks much warmer and inviting to me in my humble opinion. Great choice and for $39, I’d be hanging on to it!. Blessings, Toni

I like the new bedding and what a great buy! Home Goods really does have some awesome sales! MERRY CHRISTMAS!

12 Mindy December 23, 2009 at 10:02 pm

Ok. Yes. It does have quite the country flair. But, because of how you have married it with the pillows, it’s trying for a more urban look. The floral, framed art over the bed might be replaced. Perhaps less florals in the room will bring it to the city. Just a thought. Because, after all, $39 needs to be given a chance! Merry Christmas! ~Mindy

Hi Rhoda, I do like your new linen – maybe it is a little country for you but at $39 who’s to argue?? I’m sure at that price it looks great until you find the real thing!!
Merry Christmas,
Suzy

I think it looks good with your other bedding, and it does look a little “country” but in a peaceful / comfortable way not an over the top rustic theme. If you like it, then don’t worry about it being labelled a certain way :)
Merry Christmas!
and I think the color in my living room is a similar gold color to your bedroom, I will have to look it up because I have been wanted to find a paint match if I ever need touch up paint – it was painted this color when we moved into the house

I like the new one. Just enjoy this new look for awhile and maybe you can get something else later, if you decide you really don’t like it. Everyone should choose their OWN look. It doesn’t have to be what everyone else chooses. That is why we have choices. I LOVE the feel of cotton material that is quilted like your new one. I got my set from Overstock.com and LOVE it every time I touch it. Enjoy!

I have to agree with the comment about it looking French Country. NOT country-country. The blue with the yellow and white with the darker wood are very French. Coming from an Interior Design background like you, I like it. It seems relaxing, not energizing. Just as a bedroom should be, relaxing. I think if you had red and all the zebra prints in there it just wouldn’t be quite so relaxing. I say keep it for a month and see what you think. Sometimes color, even very subtle, can be a huge change from what you are used to! Looks beautiful as usual.

Rhoda,
The room looks French country to me, too. I also like the idea of changing the prints over the bed… they just don’t look like you.
Merry Christmas and Roll Tide Roll!!!

I love it. I am not really country or floral either and I do really like it. It might be one of those things that you keep on for awhile, then switch it out for awhile, etc. I have a “winter” one and a “summer” one.
PS Does hubby like it?

My dear, if you have to ask, you already know the answer. Yes. its very country looking. The bedroom furnishings don’t go well with the fabrics, either. Now get to shopping and you will find a better look. Maybe, not that cheap…michelle

Rhoda,
I changed my mind :-)
I do like the prints and the room is very beautiful. It took several back and forth comparisons, but it looks great.
If your hubby is totally happy, just toss a couple of crimson pillows with a script A monogram, and he’ll fall head over heels.

Maybe put the new coverlet at the foot of the bed and use a plain cover(more contemporary) on the bed.

I agree- French Country. If you didn’t have those pillows on the bed…maybe it would seem more country, but it’s beautiful and classic. Thanks for a great blog- I enjoy visiting. Merry Christmas!

What if you threw the blue blanket across the end of the bed now? I think it’s six of one; half a dozen of the other. Both look nice.

Hi Rhoda,
A very merry Christmas to you and thank you for sharing your life with us. I thoroughly enjoy your blog. Now, I think you made a wise choice. I think it adds visual interest and the colors match looks spot-on. It does not look like country to me at all. It looks crisp and classy.

Of course you should ask. We all like a second or third (or thirty fifth) opinion. I wouldnt describe the new cover as country or even floral. It reminds me of toile, very subtle. I have similar colours and have been thinking of introducing some satin, which has become very fashionable here, but can’t quite find what I’m looking for. What a dilemna!!

Dear Rhoda,
I have been reading your site for about a month. My sister-in-law has you down as one of her links. I live in Marietta and was enjoying reading about your shopping her. We DO have some of the best shopping here in MAY-RETTA!
As for your bed, I have to say a resounding “No.” The bedding distracts from your pillows and accessories in the room. I have had a similar setup in my guest bedroom for years. I have an antique chenille cover and the ralph lauren blue china bedding. I kept the entire bedroom in only blue and white(including furniture) to maintain the sanctuary feel it gives me and my guests. Your purchased coverlet makes the room feel too busy. I do have to say that the monogram pillow is beautiful and I have been thinking about doing one for my master bedroom. Think about going to a Sears/Lands End store right now. They are selling all of their white bed covers on clearance. The one here in MAY-RETTA has them right now.
I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and I will enjoy reading on for months to come.

Your house is always so beautiful, and while this room is still pretty, it does seem to have somewhat of a country feel to it now. When I’m not sure if something is right in my own home, and have to ask everyone in my family’s opinion, it’s kind of like I already know the answer. But if you are satisfied with it, enjoy!!! And for only $39, you can live with it for a while.

I do think the coverlet and shams are a bit country. BUT, used with your existing fabrics and accessories, I don’t think the overall look comes across as country. It works really well with what you have in there. I’d keep it – at least use it for a while. If you decide on something else later – well, you’ve only spent $40, and you can sell it at your next yard sale! LOL!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Good choice and excellent price! I do wish HomeGoods would come to Canada. Merry Christmas to you and your hubby! Love and Hugs, Cindy S.

I always know that when you ask for opinions, you’ll get them! And I really did want to hear what ya’ll had to say. I do love the coverlet and most everything about it, but it was the flowers that was throwing everything off for me. If it had NO flowers in the middle, I would no doubt be keeping it. SO, I’ve decided to return this one and keep my old matelasse for awhile until I find something that really floats my boat. I was afraid this one was coming off Country & many of you confirmed that. Country, I am NOT! So, back to Homegoods it goes! I’m glad my decision is made and I can pack it up and take it back. I’m sure I’ll find something I totally love. This one was about 85% and that’s not good enough. Thanks ALL for taking the time to comment.

Oh, and my hubby didn’t say it at first, but when I mentioned the Country word to him, he agreed that it did to him too, he just didn’t want to burst my bubble if I was in love with it. :) Great hubby, huh?!

I was surprised when I read some of these comments. I think all you needed to do was add a deeper solid blue (like the trim on the coverlet) throw at the end of the bed.

So glad you made a decision you are feel good about and with which the hubby agrees.

Did you try a lint brush for the pilling? I also rub a wool sock on it first, then use a lint roller. Somehow the combo works for picking up pilling.

I can’t wait to see what you find in the future. Pottery Barn has a ton of their linens on sale right now- not quite Home Goods cheap, but gorgeous!

Rhoda it’s simply lovely and does not scream country at all except for the matching pillow shams. The spread it’s self was a lovely choice. You could still take the creamy colored matelasse pillow shams and use them, that is if the new spread is creamy. Other than that….it’s all Lovely!
