Red Amaryllis

There’s something extremely satisfying about having something live blooming in the house this time of year.  One of my neighbors shared a baby amaryllis plant with me over a year ago and this is the second blooming season for my plant.  I love how it blooms right around Valentines Day, those vivid red flowers just bring life to the corner of the living room, as it reaches up to the window searching for some sunshine rays.

This one is a vivid red-orange shade and is such a pretty plant. I think I’d like to try more of these, since this one has been fool proof.  I sit it outside under my deck on the little patio area during the summer and just keep it watered.  Those green stalks soak up the sun and store energy for that burst of flower power this time of year.

And at this time of year when I need a little sunshine indoors the most, this little amaryllis does the trick!

I’ve always loved having live plants around the house and enjoy the greenery and the fact that they are living and breathing.

Do you grow any plants indoors?

J is the gardener. We have all sorts of potted plants, in his lodge. He has a way with plants. Wants to learn more about orchids. We have a plan to go to the Mo Botanical Garden Orchid show, sometime soon. I’ll take photos and he’ll dream of growing orchids!

Happy Valentine’s Day, Rhoda!

Love having plants indoors, especially in the winter. Unfortunately, I have a “black” thumb for gardening.

rhoda, I so agree, I have to have life with nature in my home, I just went to Lowes two days ago and bought 3 new house plants and they just make the house smile. Today I am buying some grocery store flowers for my vases. Pink of course in honor of Vday. I think people often forget this element in their homes. Remember my post on PPL? Paint, Plants and Lighting the cheapest decorating tools around. Have a wonderful weekend with your sweetheart. Love Ya,Kathysue

I would love to have plants inside, but my cats eat every living plant I’ve ever tried. So, I gave up.

Amaryllis are beautiful. My neighbor has them growing along the edge of her sidewalk and they are stunning.

As much as I WANTED to succeed in keeping orchids…it was just never meant to be. But! I have found the joy of paperwhites. My mom always had plants in the home so I wanted to do the same. I am just now learning that her making us water plants on specific days as part of our chores was for a specific reason..so silly of me. Mom knows best. :)

Cheers~

Yes, I grow indoor plants. I have wonderful light that streams in from outside. They all do well year-round. Your amaryllis is gorgeous.

my foyer is the place where my plants do the best. I have sidelights on each side of the door, so even on the cloudiest day, the plants get lots of light. My Christmas Cactus has been going through a growing spurt. It bloomed at Christmas, but not as well as in the past. Lo & behold, I now have 12 bud/blossoms in different stages. It’s my morning “hello” when I come down the stairs each morning.

Plants in the house are one of things that keep we hopeful for spring and getting back out in my flowerbeds. Indoor plants just freshen the air in the house during the cold winter months. Love your Amaryllis. Spring is coming!!!

have a ficus in my living room with lots of yellow leaves – everytime is gets moved it goes into shock and drops half of its leave – the ones left are real dark green and healthy looking – check out the first picture you posted – looks like the plant is growing out of the lampshade -

Loveley! Do you know about the short, leafy plant in the other two containers? I have some I think is the same plant. Someone gave me a pot several years ago and I’ve never really known what to do with it. It’s starting to wilt recently.

Yes, I love house plants.

Your amaryllis is beautiful.

And you’ve had it for over a year. Impressive!

Sweet dreams.

I was given an amaryllis as a Christmas gift in a silver pottery planter and have watched in amazement as the stem has grown almost right before my eyes. My blooms are just beginning to open. So exciting.

Love the color of yours.

Hugs!

It’s so pretty and it looks like it’s stretching to try and peek over the shutters for some sunlight :)

So jealous. Something about the new dual-glazed windows we installed years ago blocks the kind of light plants. No more kitchen garden for me! Instead, I swap things I grow on the ledge outside the kitchen window in and out. Works ok but somehow not as satisfyling.

Your Amaryllis is gorgeous, I don’t grow houseplants, they all die on me and that is terribly disheartening. I received a Wandering Jew vine last year for Christmas, I have only barely rescued it, I hope, I have pieces rerooting now.

The lamp on your table next ot the plants is really pretty. Is it one of your thrift store finds?

Hugs, Cindy S

I agree! I bought a great hydrangea plant from Trader Joe’s a few weeks ago, and a few new plants from a nursery. I need to see green, especially after record-breaking snows. I have a plant from my mom that blooms each year around my son’s birthday – it was a gift from when he was born. What a gift!

It’s gorgeous and sadly, no, I don’t even have one alive plant in my home at the moment. I know. It’s sad. I need to remedy that, but I’m a bit of a plant killer and I feel a tad sorry for each beauty that I buy. They just don’t last long when you forget to give them a drink every now and then :) .

Shannon, I got those 2 leafy plants at a yardsale last year & I have no idea what they are. So far they are doing well.

Sonal, I do have small rocks in the bottom of those pots to help with drainage. They are all staying alive so far with this method.

I’m glad ya’ll enjoy living plants inside too. I have always enjoyed having them around.

I think those of us that live where winter is cold and snowy have had enough. Black and white has become boring, we are ready for color.

My Amaryllis is also blooming right now. I think this is the best time of year for indoor bulbs, they bring so much color, light, and a bit of hope for Spring. They make me happy. You should see how happy I get when the crocus start blooming! Dance-happy.
