Bona Spring Cleaning Tips

Spring is right around the corner!  Yippee, I’m ready, how about you?

Since I put in my new hardwood floors going on 3 years ago, keeping them clean and looking nice is something that is always on my mind.  I get asked all the time if my dark engineered hardwoods are easy to keep clean and I have to say, they really are!  My floors are hand scraped hickory in a matte finish and they look beautiful all the time, but especially when I clean them and make them shine.  By the way, they are Shaw Flooring, Broadmoor planks in Mocha and I still love them, going on 3 years later.  I was worried that my dark hardwood floors might show a lot of dust, but they do not, I’m happy to report.  I think because they are hand scraped and not an even surface, it helps a lot to disguise any dust.

I have always used Bona hardwood floor cleaner on them, so when I got the chance to share that in a post with all of you, it was an easy fit for me.  I’ve used Bona on them from day one and this cleaner does an excellent job with cleaning and making my floors gleam.  So, let’s talk about some spring cleaning tips today.

What do you do in your home for spring cleaning?

I remember when we were growing up, my mother was always a cleaning fanatic and we would take down the screens on the house, get outside and spray them all down with soap and water, clean the windows until they shined and the entire house was cleaned from top to bottom.  I don’t do quite as much as my mother did growing up, but I do like to keep my house looking pretty and shiny clean.

Here are a few things to keep in mind with spring cleaning:

  1. Clean and mop all the hardwood floors (with Bona, of course)
  2. Use a dust mop under furniture, removing all the dust bunnies that seem to accumulate.  I have several pieces of furniture that are open underneath and these always have dust bunnies under them.
  3. Wait until the pollen has stopped falling before you tackle outdoor spaces, like porches.  I did this last year and just waited until the yellow stopped falling and then got out there and cleaned it all, getting it ready for summer.
  4. Take this time to declutter, move items to a “give away” bin and donate unwanted clothes and decor to a needy cause.  I’m in the process of doing this too.  Get rid of “stuff”.
  5. Use a pressure washer on concrete walkways to freshen them up. That’s on my list this year.
  6. Add spring decor around your house to get you ready for the new season of green.  That’s always welcome around my house.
  7. bona floor cleaner

So back to cleaning your hardwood floors.  Bona products are non-toxic and GREENGUARD certified.  They have products for hardwood floors, wood furniture, and stone/tile/laminate floors as well, which make cleaning easy.  And, there’s no residue left behind, I can attest to that.

I have a Bona floor mop with a head that holds cleaning pads and dusting pads.   You can buy these cleaning pads, which simply stick to the head and they are easily removed for washing.  I spray the blue cleaning pad with Bona cleaner and run it over my floors creating a nice shine and getting up any residue on the floor, after I vacuum.

I also picked up a Microfiber Dusting Pad from Bona, which also fits the mop head. It’s great for picking up dust and dog hair in hard to reach places.  It really does pick up the dust and you can also wash this in the washing machine.  I took mine outside and knocked off the dust bunnies on the back porch and they went flying out the door.

Spraying down the mop head cleaning pad is easy and fast.

And it doesn’t take long to cover your hardwood floors with the mop head cleaning pad.  It works fast and easy.

My floors look great after cleaning with Bona and they stay looking great.

I only use my Bona cleaning products about once a month and my floors stay looking so nice on a regular basis.  I have always used Bona and will continue to do so, so this is an easy share for me.  Get a $3 coupon  to try out Bona products.

I have hardwood floors and having been using the Bona mop for about 3 years now. I love it and wouldn’t use any other. I like that it has a wide cleaning path and gets the job done faster. I wet my pad first and then spray the cleaner lightly on the floor as I mop rather than on the pad like your picture shows. Your hardwood floors are pretty. I was wondering since they are hand scraped and uneven does the mop still run smoothly over them? I have also used the Bona mop with the refillable canister that squirts and love it too!

HI, Lynne, I don’t have a problem with the unevenness of the floors. They really are so easy to keep clean and look as good as the day they went in. I also spray the floor some too.

We don’t have any carpet around the house, only wood floors and tile, so I mop a lot but I’ve never used the bona products, I will give it a try soon! Thanks…Gina F

HI, Renie, my floors are Shaw Floors, Broadmoor in Mocha. Engineered hardwood and these are glued down. They have several colors to choose from. I fell in love with the 3 sizes of planks: 3, 5, and 7″.

Thanks, Rhoda 🙂 I didn’t notice the different sizes until I read your comment and went back to look. Very neat! I love the look.

I LOVE Bona! When we built our home 8 years ago the “hardwood guy” suggested it. I later found the Bone Tile cleaner and that does a fabulous job on my tile as well.

Your floor & entry looks beautiful & I haven’t seen that view of your foyer before. Just wondering where Bona products can be purchased? We have a marble floor in the master bath that is the dickens to clean. I’m thinking maybe the Bona [product for stone & tile would be worth trying.

HI, Linda, you can find them most everywhere, like Lowes and Home Depot, in their cleaning area. They do have stone and tile cleaner too. Be sure and get the $3 coupon, link above!

I have the same, Nan. I just swiffer them, buff them when looking dull and use a very lightly damp rag on the swiffer to get any actual dirt on them, always going over with a dry one afterwards. I have a roomba irobot to vacuum and i t work GREAT, so that keeps anything that could grind into the floor at bay. There is such adifference in the soft glow of the old floors with a wax over shellac/varnish finish. A woddwoorker doing some repairs on an antique noticed them immediately! People think they need waxing every year, but I do mine maybe once a year if I’m good! 🙂

Thanks so much for the swiffer tip! I don’t wax them as much as I should, but they still look pretty good! Thanks again teresa.

Sounds like that is a good plan on old floors, Nan. I’ve never had really old floors before, but the new prefinished wood floors really are easy to keep clean.

HI, Alissa, I bought the fabric from Calico Corners and had the drapes made locally. It’s called Tilbury.

Rhoda, are your drapes lined, or is the fabric heavy enough without lining? I am considering this for my dining room window & for covering the chair cushions.

HI, LInda, they are lined. I had a local fabric company that sews drapery make them for me. They are all lined and hang well. Pinch pleated.

I agree about Bona for hardwood floors. I was sold when my daughter’s neighbor/friend who is also a flooring distributor told me he only uses that product on their floors and he took over the floor care from his wife because he is so picky. I also thought the directions say to dampen the pad and spray on the floor directly so that’s what I have followed. Truly easy to find and a good product, at least for wood floors. And I guess whether it’s a sponsored post or not it gets the word out about a good product. Everyone should do their own research or homework on any product.

I starting waiting til after all of the pollen to clean outside too…worth the wait. We have GOT to power wash our sidewalk this year…after 7 years, it desperately needs it. And, I’m sure it will go a long way in improving curb appeal.

I was just at a flooring store today…picking out wood that looks very similar to yours. Seeing it in your home makes really excited. I’m doing this with a brand through the blog…a dream come true for me. I’ve heard lots about Bona over the years and will be sure to give it a try.

So sorry, I have had all the floors and my high quality most expensive laminate was the worst. Swiffer wet jet was ok but a little sticky feeling. I never tried Bona products. Now my house has old wood floors with a Swedish finish, or something like that. They’re so easy to keep up.

I love using Bona! I’ve been using it on my hardwoods for 8 years… back then you could only purchase it at the Hardwood Floor Center. Bona also makes a Hardwood Floor REFRESHER. Add that to your spring cleaning. It is like a polish for after cleaning. I do that once or twice a year and it makes my floors look brand new!! Great Post!! xox, Emily p.s. LOVE your hair curly!!!!!

One reason that we see so much dust on our wood floors now is that our filters are maxed out since the furnaces have been running and stirring up dust. As soon as the temperatures go up a little more and I have a day that the door can be propped open I know it’s time to change furnace filters. When I change a filter I make an extra effort to take a small whisk broom and clean out the area around the filter while the dirty one is out of place. Our homes and air will be better for it. Love hardwood floors!
