Breakfast in Savannah

While on the way back from Tybee Island last weekend, we stopped in Savannah for breakfast.  Headed to Clary’s, the restaurant made famous in the book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.  Did you read that one? I got a signed copied of the book in Savannah back in the mid-90’s when the book was all the rage and enjoyed the story tremendously.  I remember hearing about this breakfast spot when I read the book.  It was fun to finally visit this spot and it didn’t disappoint.

clarys in savannah

Clary’s, have you been?

clarys

Quaint and cute inside.

clarys menu

We sat outside on the sidewalk, just like in Europe.  It was a beautiful morning watching people and taking in the historic street.

clarys breakfast

My choice of breakfast was stuffed French toast.  Golden perfection, stuffed with strawberries and cream cheese between the layers and dolloped with a big helping of whipped cream.  Yum, it was good!

savannah 2

While walking the street, I couldn’t help but admire the homes and architecture in the historic district of Savannah.

savannah 3

These row houses are so fascinating to me.

saannah pink house

All colors and hues of pink and color.

savannah 4

The architecture reminds me of New Orleans.

savannah brick home

Stately brick is always classic.  Those huge sprawling live oak trees dripping with moss add to the character of Savannah.

savannah flags

Flags flying over the brick lined sidewalk.

savannah 5

Beautiful lanterns and entryways.

savannah shutters

Tall shutters and check out the leafy detail of the ironwork on the windows.

savannah doorway

I love a beautiful grand entrance like this with all the gorgeous millwork.

savannah tree lined street

A mossy tree lined street.

savannah 6

Window boxes and gardens are definitely part of the beauty of Savannah.

savannah 7

savannah row houses

Tall and stately row houses.

savannah st. john the baptist cathedral

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah, one of the prettiest churches I’ve ever seen.  Those double spires are so tall and you can see them from far away.

madison square

Madison Square.

Even though I didn’t get to have a long visit in Savannah this time, breakfast was a treat and getting to take in a few of the squares along the way was a highlight.  I love Savannah so much and can’t get enough of this historic beauty in Georgia.  Have you been to Savannah and do you love it too?  There’s so much history and beauty to take in!

We honeymooned in Savannah. But it was back in the days before the Internet so I am sure we missed so many incredible things! I would love to go back.

My husband and I drove to Savannah from Connecticut for our 40th anniversary and absolutely loved it. I think that is what made me so hell bent on moving south. The scenery was beautiful but the people were just exceptional and I can’t wait to go back. We ate at Mrs. Wilkes and absolutely loved it.

Thanks for the lovely post, Rhoda. My husband are privileged to visit Savannah several times a year because we visit our son who is the morning meteorologist for one of the local TV stations there. I love Savannah. I never tire of it. I love the beautiful homes in the downtown district. There are so many fabulous restaurants. Since we stay on Whitemarsh Island, located on the Wilmington River, we take the short drive over to Tybee Island almost each time we go. It is everything you said it is in your post. Did you know the Nicholas Sparks movie, “Last Song,” was filmed on Tybee? The first time I saw the movie I could hardly focus on the plot for watching the scenery. I am glad you were able to enjoy your visit. Thanks for taking the time to share it with us.

Hi,Sherry, I don’t think I’ve seen that movie, but love Nicholas Sparks. I’ll have to be on the lookout for it. How fun to visit your meteorologist son in Savannah!

We visited Savannah for the first time several years ago. It was spectacular and the people were so friendly and hospitable. We loved eating at The Old Pink House, The Pirate House, and Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House, and Leopolds Ice Cream Shop. So many wonderful shops to browse in and loved the various tours of the town including the Ghost Tour at night. We stayed at The Marshall House and would highly recommend it!

My husband and I just spend a week there for our anniversary! It was so fun and yes Savannah is beautiful. It was our first trip (and not our last) so I learned a lot about it’s history. Thank you for the pictures and the reminder of my trip!

I love to visit savannah. My daughter went to college there, at Armstrong Atlantic. We visit every year at Easter week and have gone to Mass at the cathedral on Easter Sunday. It is one of our favorite vacations.

Hmmm. Rhoda could it be you were visiting Tybee and Savannah with a special ‘friend’? I note no pics of you and whoever went with you? and you never gave us your friend’s name… I have a curious mind and I’m always hoping for well-deserved true love for you.

We went for the first time October 2013 and were blown away by the beauty of Savannah. We loved walking the streets during the day and at midnight. We were amazed at the single people walking by themselves at night. Loved seeing First Baptist Church of Savannah. My preacher when I was a little girl left our church to become FBCS preacher. We drove over to Tybee Island but weren’t really impressed at that time. Cut my tire on my new car looking for the Mermaid Cottages. We are use to our Alabama beaches but, we would like to go back in the summer. We can’t wait for another trip to Savannah.

What wonderful photos, Rhoda! I have lived in Savannah for 12 years now. It’s a truly unique city…always something going on. If you go again, try to find a free newspaper called Connect Savannah. It comes out weekly and lists all of the activities in the area. Oh, and FYI, try to visit in March – – the azaleas, and dogwoods are in full bloom and insanely beautiful!

We lived in Savannah when we were first married (40 years ago) and as I recall, Clary’s was a drugstore.

We spent a few days in Savannah, staying at the Forsyth Inn on the edge of the Park. It is a beautiful city with such stately buildings. The owners of the Forsyth Inn told us that one of the reasons for the large single-hung windows on the front of the homes were for entering and leaving. Something about the taxes charged for the exterior doors on the street-side of the houses. We used the windows for doors to sit on the front porch to have our coffee while we stayed there.

seeing your post made me smile. its my hometown 🙂 clary’s and the area around it are just the tip of the iceburg of savannah. you must go back. hopefully with your special friend 😉 I’ve been going back every month since summer on brief overnight trips…I highly recommend staying at the Brice downtown (the old Mulberry Inn) and if you venture out of downtown make sure you visit this awesome consignment furniture store called “clutter”…I have snapped up little things I can tuck into my suitcase but one day I’m going to back a moving van up to that place to stock a home in the area.

Nancy, thanks for stopping by! You are right, this is barely showing what Savannah is like, but I can’t help but take pics of the beautiful homes when I go through there. I need to go back and get a proper Savannah fix one day soon!
