Today, I’m joining Marie for an Heirloom Party, not that I have many heirlooms, and actually I have few things that could be considered heirlooms by definition, but I thought it would be fun to share a couple of my family treasures with all of you too. These things that came from my paternal grandma, who has been gone for many years now.
Neither side of my family had much growing up. In fact, if we had grown up back during the Old South plantation days, instead of being like Scarlett O’Hara’s family in Gone With the Wind with all their beautiful finery, big plantation home, filled with fine furniture, I’m quite sure my family would have been living in the sharecropper’s cottage. 🙂 We just don’t come from a lot of material wealth. And that’s OK too. I’ve mentioned before that I had to buy someone else’s family history as I’ve collected my own antique pieces, so now I suppose I can call them my own heirlooms now.
When my Dad’s mom passed away, he was able to get just a couple of things from her house (he had a lot of sisters), so there are only 2 furniture pieces that he brought home and then passed on to me, when I expressed interest in them. First, this little side table. I can remember seeing this table in my Grandma’s little cottage home in Panama City, FL and when we would visit her growing up, I can still remember sleeping in a room with old armoires, feather beds, and smelling those old musty smells.
This little side table was in her livingroom, so when my Dad gave it to me, I promised him I’d keep it and take care of it. It’s certainly not a fine piece of furniture, I’m sure nothing she owned was expensive, but it’s very pretty to me and I treasure it because it is a part of my family heritage. The only thing I’ve ever done to it is give it a coat of poly for protection and it serves me well in my own livingroom.
This old Singer sewing machine spent many years under my parent’s stairway closet and I finally asked for it too. I used it in my old sunroom in GA and then brought it over here, where it’s used as a side table in the beachy guestroom.
The drawers are so pretty and I love the patina on the wood.
The attachments are still in the drawer and I can imagine my Grandma sitting here sewing. My Dad said she used to sew a lot on this old Singer, wonderful memories to treasure! These are the only 2 family pieces I have.
How about you? Do you have many family heirlooms and are you making plans to pass them on to your kids or another family member? It is so special to keep things like this in the family, don’t you think?

It’s always fun to meet up with blog friends, new and old. And I just met a new one this week, Renae Moore, from Renae Moore Designs. She lives in Canton, GA (near my old hometown) and was over here getting her son settled in at Samford University and we got to meet up for coffee and a bagel at Panera. It was so much fun, she’s a sweet person, a fellow decorator and a sister in Christ and I love that we could just sit down and get to know each other better. We certainly had plenty to chat about. Meeting up with blog friends is always a treat! Renae, I look forward to getting together again.
I’ll be at the Briarwood Flea market today around Noon if anyone else is planning to be there. Look for me!

Hello Rhoda – thank you for joining the party! I am in love with your two heirloom pieces. First, that little table is beautiful. I like the lines in the wood and pretty spindly legs. And that sewing machine is so sweet. My favorite part is the design on the drawers. So neat.
Blessings,
Marie

The sewing table is just precious! And I love what you said about buying someone else’s family history — that’s what I have to do, also!
Cheers, Andrea

Love your family pieces..To me some of the greatest family pieces are not those things that are worth thousands…it’s those things that you have watched your grandma’s used everyday..or those pieces that have been in a living room or where ever that are probable not worth much but they bring back memories…for example..I got my grandma’s corn dish that she made gravy in for dinner…not worth much but to me..it is..or the apple cookie jar that I look at everyday…not worth thousands..but to me me it is…I love those kind of things..I would take those things anyday over any amount of money..thanks for sharing..

The sewing machine table is amazing. My grandmother has a similar one that I’ve always admired. Also, I wanted to invite you to participate in my giveaway. It started today and it will go on until Monday. Good Luck!

Rhoda, I’ve really enjoyed your story and pictures today. My family upbringing was similar – our wealth was measured in love, not things, but the “things” that you do have are beautiful heirloom pieces and I’m so glad you have them. Hope your week-end is wonderful!

Hi Rhoda,
Another wonderful post! Both pieces you shared today are beautiful, and I don’t think their true worth can be calculated in terms of monetary value. You collect and enhance so many things that make your home unique and special … these family pieces contribute history and character. I’m happy for you that you own them, treasure them, and display them so beautifully!

I love the old sewing machine & cabinet. My hubby had the metal bottom to one but the cabinet top was missing. He made a small table out of it. I will treasure it always. I think heirlooms don’t have to be worth money. To me the family memories attached with something is what makes it an heirloom. Love yours.

Your pretty furniture holds such sweet memories.
I use Nana’s Rosepoint silver every day and often look at a piece and remember family dinners and the people who have used that silver. A small jointed figure my Dad hand carved for his Mom in the 1940s. It looks like Loretta Young, complete with stilletto heels and a fancy dress. The steam launch remote control ship model, complete with engine that he made in the 1980s and named after me. Oh, and the plug Grandpa’s unused chewing tobacco. Grandma kept it for 40 years and when she died, it came to me. I can’t bear to throw it away. Inherited objects can be treasures emotionally and not worth anything financially.

Rhoda, I just had to comment! Several years ago, we were in need of a small table for our formal living room. I had inherited a Gone with the Wind lamp, and wanted a table for it. We saw an ad for tables that someone was selling. We went there and bought two little tables from a lady. One of the tables had belonged to the lady’s grandmother, and it had always held a vase of fresh flowers. I bought the two tables, and even though I am a do-it-yourselfer, and had refinished furniture, for some strange reason I was compelled to have the table professionally refinished. I was glad I did. The professional completely transformed it, and though the table was old, it looked new. It looks exactly like the table you show here, that you promised your dad you would take care of. I just think it is ironic that you and I have the exact table, and that my table did not look anything like it does now, and that I feel a calling to take extra care of it.

I love the drawers on the Singer sewing machine stand. Such detail! I love the sentimental value your pieces have for you – they are the best!

Rhoda.. I love the family heirlooms and wish I had more of my own. My dad inherited his aunt’s house and contents when she passed away about 8 years ago. He recently led me on a tour of the inside where I found treasures galore. There were buffets, china, display cases, a dining room table and chairs and the bedroom suit he had as a child. Everything was antique and had been sitting there for yeras and years. Imagine my surprise and excitement and then my feeling of Now what? All of these pieces need to be refurbished and cleaned up. Do you have any suggestions on how to find the right person for the job? I know there are many people who could take on the project but would probably charge an arm and a leg. I’m trying to figure out where to start. I live in Montgomery and my dad is about an hour south. Any suggestions? Thank you so much!
