This week, I’m doing my fashion over 50 post a day early.
Most of the time, I’m not dressing up all that much anymore and when I’m going out shopping or for a casual outing, I often go to my old standby, jeans. Jeans have always been a fashion staple for me and I love the versatility of jeans and how they can be dressed up or down. Most of the time, I’m wearing them with flats or boots and today I’m sharing a few casual skinny jeans with flats look. I like to change up my tops, pairing them with jewelry or scarves and it’s so easy to come up with so many different combos of jeans, tops, accessories and shoes. Flats are my friend these days and I have quite a few of them.

Most of us have white tops in our closet and while white is not the most flattering color to wear, it is a good look with jeans and flats.  I have button up longer white shirts and white/cream t-shirts and both are versatile to have in the closet.  Adding a colorful scarf and jewelry near the face can bring out color next to your skin since white can wash out your complexion if you don’t have anything near the face.  So, I added a colorful green and blue scarf and turquoise earrings to add some color next to my face.  A bold lipstick and added color brings out my blue eyes.
These jeans are from Kohls, skinny Rock and Republic Berlin jeans. Â (Affiliate link)
Shoes came from Target a few years ago. Â Top I bought in Louisiana. Â (similar shirt) (Affiliate Link)Â

Adding some color around the face and a variety of colorful jewelry always dresses up jeans and a plain white shirt. Â White does look good when you have a tan in the summer, so that always helps too.

Adding jewelry is a fun way to personalize an outfit too.
A local jewelry maker here in Atlanta sent me these pieces from her Etsy Shop, Tied up Memories, so check out Tracy’s shop when you get a chance. Â

I love turquoise shades of jewelry so much and wear it a lot, so all of the pieces she sent me have this color.

I layered the 2 chains and they look really cute together and the bracelets will be fun to layer with other things I have too.

I  love wearing jeans and t-shirts for a very casual outing and flat shoes are my fave.  I bought those leopard cowskin flat sneakers that I’ve showed you before and recently spotted these online and got another pair.  This is a plain t-shirt with 3/4 sleeves that I picked up along the way and I found that black and white infinity scarf at a yardsale recently.  Similar long white T from Gap  (affiliate link)
This is not a colorful outfit, but I do love black and white a lot.

These black and white pony spotted flat sneakers from 6pm Shoes (affiliate link) will be a fun addition too, so now I have 2 pair of these.  They are stylish and not old-lady at all.  I refuse to wear geriatric shoes and these are comfortable and cute.

I have loved these Leopard flats from Sam Edelman (affiliate link) for a year and it’s fun to add another pair. The black and white pony ones are very comfortable too.

I do have a lot of black and white in my closest and have always enjoyed this combo.  Here’s a similar black and white striped scarf . (affiliate link)

Here’s another combo with the Covered Perfectly (affiliate link)  top I got a few weeks ago.  This is a great kelly green color and I added a black and white zebra scarf.  With the black and white pony flats, it’s a casual look for spring.

Black and white adds such a great accent to colors. Â Here’s another cute zebra scarf (affiliate link). Â As you can see, I do love animal prints.

A quick change from the scarf to colorful jewelry is fun for summer too. Scarves and jewelry are like accessories for your body. Â Just like in the home, the accessories are the finishing touch to an outfit.

One more casual look with jeans and flats is this J Crew striped blue shirt: Â Similar shirt (affiliate link). Â Paired with a colorful blue scarf, it’s a fun and easy look for spring.

I picked up this colorful scarf in St. Simons last year and I love the little pom-pom fringe. The brand is Pink House and they have a cute website that I just found.

Flats are from TJ Maxx and are Tommy Hilfiger. Â These Kohls Aerosole flat shoes are a cute look too. (affiliate link)
Hope you enjoy these ideas for adding style to a pair of straight or skinny jeans from casual to relaxed, but put together.  These are some of my favorite things to wear for a casual outing.
Note: Â This post contains affiliate links. Â I earn a small commission if you buy through my links. Â I try to find similar or the same clothing and shoes that I’m wearing.Â

I am enjoying this series very much. Today’s post reflects my style perfectly. Thank you for sharing the etsy link. I will be checking that out for sure!
Rhoda, love that you share smart ways to enhance our wardrobe for us ladies over fifty. I like to shop at Kohls, and hope to find similar outfits that you share.
I need to update my wardrobe and these are great tips which I’ll use. You look great as always, Rhoda.
What cute outfits and inspiring ideas! I have been a fan of flats since my high school days and have never been able to feel comfortable with heels on. It has been good over the last decade or so to see flats become so popular and available in so many colors and styles.

Hi Rhoda! Love your blog soooo much! Fashion over 50 is an excellent idea for a series. If you could only pick 1 pair of the animal print shoes… Which would you choose? I have lots of shoes and lots of solid black and white shoes but very little brown and I love flats. Do they run true to size for wearing barefoot?
Hi, Kelly, I love both of those pairs, but I’d probably choose the gold/black leopard ones first. I fell in love with them a year ago & have thoroughly enjoyed wearing them. I ordered my regular size in both, 8 1/2 and I did add inserts to the Sam Edelman pair and wear them with no socks. They are nice and broken in now.
Cute outfits! I do more jewelry for color than scarves as being petite sometimes bulk can make you look shorter and don’t need that, ha! Also would do adorable flats in a minute if tall like you but I gravitate to boots with at least 2″ inch heel or bootie with my jeans, only wish I could do more flats. I own one pair of pointy toe flats and wear them a good bit also around the house. I do enjoy jeans, jeans , jeans with all kinds of bright tops, pop on statement necklaces, cute jacket and off I go. I love your leopard print shoes……….so sassy & cute on you!
Do you order your usually shoe size when ordering from 6pm Shoes? Love your blog!
Yes, I ordered my regular size, which is 8 1/2.
Rhoda, while I am not “yet” there (not too far off) I enjoy your fashion style. Comfortable, pulled together and classic. And yes, I will go ahead and say it “age” appropriate. I find many of the fashion posts I see these days to be women in their late 30s/40s dressing out of the juniors department. Don’t get me wrong, if you can wear that size there are SOME great options for lower prices. But, when they start looking like the teen down the street or my college age daughters I have to question what they are choosing to wear. Thanks for sharing your look with us.
Thank you, Lauren! I think that’s a good point. I definitely don’t want to look like a teenager.
Love your style!
I LOVE all your outfits today! I find myself in flats the older I get, unless I’m going out. Ladies, Target has some really cute flats right now! Rhoda, you’re so right about accessorizing. I never feel completely dressed without my jewelry, and enjoy scarves as well. I enjoy adding a third piece to my look such as, a cardigan, vest, blazer, etc…
What a difference the scarf and the bright lipstick made with the white shirt! I could go on and on….I love your blog and your ideas!!
Yes, I usually check out Target for flats every season, they always have some cute ones. And you can add inserts for added comfort.
My wardrobe is so much like yours (but it’s for the 70+ person I am) , but I could ‘pump up the volume’ some, so to speak, in the accessory department. I need to add more color. Do any of Target’s shoes fit narrow feet? It’s so hard to find narrow shoes these days. Do the inserts help with the fit or are they just for comfort? Would you mind elaborating on them, Rhoda? Thanks.
Hi, Daphne, the inserts help with comfort and they also take up more space in the shoe, so could possibly help with width as well. You could try taking some in Target with you and try them out with inserts and see if that helps. I don’t think Target would have narrow widths.
Great advise,
Love all your combinations .I found I cannot wear scarfs or anything around my neck as the weather warms up.
It’s a power surge thing. The jewelry would work for added color and style.
Thanks for helping me visualize.

Such good basic suggestions…I would say to someone unsure where to start with a fresh wardrobe and totally insecure about it: “Start with this- find your perfect blue jeans for style and comfort and keep 3 pairs of same.
Anyone can begin there. After that Your Tops, shoes and jewelry suggestions are so easy to work. I am a ‘winter’ so Black, white and red are staples for me -Always.
There is much to be said for this basic wardrobe foundation! Thanks!
I always enjoy your posts. While I’m not quite 50 yet, I relate more to your posts than to those showing very high hemlines and/or juniors department clothing. Just the other day, I was in a western wear store desperate for a new pair of jeans (I’m very tall, and I knew they’d have my inseam length). It was awful..!! I looked like an over 40 desperate to relive her 20’s!
Needless to say those jeans remained in their stock and I’m still in search of a sensible pair that will still turn my husband’s head! With that said, I like what you’ve paired with the jeans you’ve featured in today’s blog.
Thank you for appealing our sensible, yet attractive side!
Beth, check out the Rock and Republic brand from Kohls. They do fit me nicely and the rise of the jeans is not low.
i adore the pom-pom scarf and TH shoes. Does the scarf have a brand, or did I miss that. Are you wearing the R&R jeans. I guess I need to reread the post… I was fixated on the pics! I also like my shirts tucked in the front, at least with a slim belt. so long as I still have waist, I figure I might as well show it. 🙂 Love this addition to your blog.
HI, Colleen, I looked and it is Pink House scarves, found their website, looks like fun!

I have shown that blue and white striped blouse before and I did tuck it in that time. I go back and forth! http://southernhospitalityblog.com/fashion-over-50-cropped-pants-flats/
And yes, I’m wearing the Rock and Republic jeans from Kohls. I love them!
I live in skinny jeans and flats (or flat boots this time of year). It’s a no-brainer. So great that you can grab any top you own and it all goes together well.
Great outfit combinations, but then you have always had impeccable taste. =)
I’ve been enjoying your Fashion Over 50 posts. I’m not as tall as you (5.5) but we have a similar build and wear similar styles. I really like the green shirt from Covered Properly that you were wearing. Can you share what size you got it in? I’d like to order 1 for myself. Thank!
Nancy, I got a size Small from Covered Perfectly. You will love the fabric.
Love you scarf collection. I’m a big fan of scarves myself. Just wish I could remember some of those cute ways to tie/wear them when I’m getting dressed.
