I’m still recapping some of the outfits I wore on my New Orleans trip, so today I’ll be sharing flats and skinny crop pants. We had some nice sunny days, so it was almost spring like several days we were out and it was nice to get out of the boots and into flats for a change.
I do love flats, do you? I have several pairs of flats in my closet and these days, I am mostly staying with flats or lower heels. This outfit is a combo of gray skinny jeans from Loft, a white cable knit short sleeved sweater from Target (Merona) that I picked up at Goodwill for $5 (looked brand new), and a turquoise cardigan from my C Wonder shopping spree. I still have a few more things to show you from that shopping spree and I am enjoying all the pieces I picked up so reasonably.
Again, with my gold jewelry that I’m loving so much these days.
That navy and white infinity scarf has been a great purchase too and I mix it with so many things. Here’s a similar one I found online at Forever 21.
Flats from BCBG in gray. Similar skinny jeans from Old Navy.
It was fun finding some rustic backdrops to take pics down in New Orleans and these were all taken in Covington.
Sweater: C Wonder (here is a Similar cardigan, that looks pretty from Target)
On another outing, I paired the same turquoise cardigan with khaki skinny pants, also from C Wonder. This time I wore one of my fave pairs of shoes, these Sam Edelman leopard sneakers.
I do think cropped pants look better if they are narrow and tapered. I don’t like them big a the bottom, but tapered is nice and neat.
These skinny cropped pants are fun to wear. I remember back in the day when I wouldn’t be caught dead in short pants and had to search high and low for pants long enough. I’m tall and they were never long enough, but I’m really enjoying the cropped pants look all over again. They were popular back in the 50’s (think Audrey Hepburn) and they look cute again now. These days, most any pants length will work and you can wear flats or booties and it all sort of works. I’m really happy that so many brands are now offering Talls/Longs too, that helps a lot for us taller gals.
Shoes: Sam Edelman Becker leopard shoes (I paid $100 for mine a year ago) and this first link is a great deal. If the first link is sold out, here’s another link to them for less than I paid too at Lord & Taylor, Sam Edelman Becker. I have thoroughly enjoyed mine.
So, that’s a cropped pants and flats look that I enjoy wearing. These pants have zippers on the ankles and have a riding pant look.
Another way I wore these same pants from C Wonder was with my booties. I wore my socks and booties with a J Crew blue and white striped long sleeved shirt.
Pants: C Wonder, Similar pants from Gap / Shirt: J Crew / Similar shirt / Leopard Belt: Similar / Booties: American Eagle Outfitters, Similar booties
I’ve had this leopard belt for a few years and it’s fun to mix it up with these textures and colors.
I’m really enjoying these khaki booties too. Very fun look!
Do you love flats too? How are you mixing up the flats and pants? Are you getting used to cropped pants now? It took me awhile, but I’m liking them again.
Be sure and come back tomorrow! I’ve got my very first fashion giveaway for you all and I think you will love the products!!

Rhoda, I love your outfits and your pictures! Flats AND heels for me. I love them both! My husband and I lived in New Orleans for 5 years when we were first married. I was a student at New Orleans Seminary and he at UNO. So glad to see you enjoying one of our favorite cities.

Love you doing these fashion posts! You look super cute in your flats and skinny ankle pants. I do love those type pants and have some with the zipper at the bottom like that. I don’t do flats too much as being petite I like some sort of heel although my new cowboy boots are flatter, one pair and the other one is the shorter cowboy boots with heels. Flatter shoes can be worn with anything so they say especially since some things at our age just do not look right with a heel. I have glitter stone sandals that are flat that I love from “Watermelon Patch”. They sell yellowbox and are on the way to Gulf Shores in MS. Everyone stops! Turquoise is a fab color on you ! Cute outfits 🙂

I love these fashion posts – please keep them coming! I am 68 years old, but have been able to “shop my closet” to create a few new outfits – thanks to you showing us “what to pair with what.” I recently have gotten a few compliments on my clothing – makes me feel young again! Thanks again.

Although my M.O. is typically dresses and skirts, I do like cropped pants and boyfriend jeans, and I just love booties! Flats are great, but I need a little height, so I haven’t embraced wearing them. My daughters love Toms flats.
Enjoying your fashion posts!

Yes to cropped plants & flats! I mostly wear flats (there are SO many cute ones) since I don’t really have occasion to wear heels; however, I also love wedges.

I love these posts. You can wear anything since you are tall and thin. I am short and working on the weight loss thing. The cropped pants look good but I think they have to have narrow legs or they look awkward. Yours are nice and fitted.

Love your outfits, Rhoda. I don’t have many flats because of my bad feet (I would love to wear them)but I do wear sandals in the warmer weather with crop pants & jeans. I’m almost 66 & 5’9″. I’ve had trouble finding jeans long enough in the past but the crop pants work. Thanks for the fashions posts, keep them coming!

I love crop pants, and they look awesome on you. I struggle with them on me – I hope they look intentionally cropped, and not like pants that are too short. I am 5′ 7″, how tall are you?
Rhoda says
Tammy, I’m 5’8″.

Love your look, but unfortunately at age 60 I’ve developed some ‘junk in the trunk’ so I like to cover my backside most days (referring to the belted slacks with the tailored shirt). Wish I could wear flat shoes, but like another poster, I have bad feet with arthritis and flats just don’t give me enough arch support. I do like those Sam Eddleman sneaker-type shoes. Too cute. Keep ’em coming.
Rhoda says
Becky, I think many of us have some feet issues now. To make flats more comfortable, I use Scholl’s inserts and those help some to cushion the foot. Also, I wanted to say that even if you can’t wear skinny pants and don’t feel comfortable with those, I still think straight legged pants are very fashionable and slimming too. So look for straight and those give a longer silhouette. Then, yes by all means get longer tunics to help cover up what you don’t want to show. I know we all have different shapes and sizes and you have to find what works for you, but I truly think that everyone can wear slimmer pants and longer tops and look very fashionable and good in them. It’s all about balancing it all out.

Being 5’3″, I am embracing the flats but still love a heel for height! Thanks for the crop pant post – as always you look great!

LOVED the last two outfits, that is right up my alley and pretty much how I dress except I would have to add in a gingham shirt as well. Both outfits looked classic and put together simple and beautifully. Spot on , on these two outfits!! I pretty much only wear flats now, heels if any are kitten heels for special occasions. I have many flats and enjoy them all. I am still wearing a pair of leopard flats I purchased over 15 years ago, they never seem to go out of style. Love the Sam Edelman tennie/loafers. His brand fit my slim foot really well and have always found them to be very comfy! Keep up the good work Rhoda!!

Can’t go wrong with leopard flats! I’m enjoying your posts for us fashionable 50+ gals.

Great post Rhoda! I love the slimmer fit pants – they are much more of a classic look. I love to wear mine with flats, too. Thank you for confirming what is currently a staple of my wardrobe. I am always worried that I am dressing appropriately for my age!
I love your fashion posts!

I am definitely loving your fashion posts. You look great in everything you wear, but you are also giving me some great ideas. I would surely give theseosts 5 stars.

Love your outfits. I wear flats most of the time, but I did purchase two pairs of boots this winter. I have not felt comfortable wearing the boots with my jeans tucked inside. I’m older than you and I don’t want people to think I’m trying to look like a young Chick. Should I just go for it anyway? Thanks!!
Rhoda says
Hi, Charlotte, I definitely think you should try it out and see how you feel wearing them like that. Put them on and look in the mirror!
Charlotte says
Thanks for the advice….I’ll give them a try!!
Suzanne says
Give your boots and skinny pants a try! I’m 62 and teach first grade. Yesterday for our valentine party I wore skinny jeans tucked in boots and a long maroon shirt from Gap that has little hearts all over the fabric. Several teachers have complimented me on my boots and jeans. At first I felt unsure and even texted my daughter a picture to ask if I looked silly. But now I enjoy wearing them. I, too, have foot issues but finally found Eric Michael boots that are really well-made, supportive, and accommodate my Birkenstock inserts.
Rhoda says
Suzanne, that’s great, I’m glad you tried the boots and jeans. I think sometimes we just have to step out of our comfort zone & then you fall in love with a new look.
SoonerLaura says
I think you look fabulous and that cardigan is my favorite color of clothes at the moment. I have riding boots that I wear all winter with pants tucked in and I’m 52, so I think we “older” gals can pull off that look, no problem. My feet and one ankle have really given me problems the last few years and I wear fewer and fewer heels all the time (a low heel on a bootie or a platform sandal is fine) I just can’t do the flats with no socks. I’ve tried, I can’t wear shoes without socks and the ones that you can’t see don’t stay where they belong. I live in the Skechers flats though with a sock to match my pants for work – put the pants aren’t short.
teresa says
You should try the nylon toe socks. I wear them with everything in the summer even some sandals. My shoes last forever and no “ickiness”.

I really enjoy your blog and your fashion posts. I am 46 and find that it is sometimes hard to find outfits that are still stylish without looking like something a high school girl would wear. You do a great job of looking trendy without looking like you are competing with your daughter.
I have another fashion blog that I enjoy and thought you and your readers might too.
