Today’s post will be fun to share with y’all and I think you’ll enjoy it!
My friend, Karen, who I introduced to you all in a previous fashion post has a fashion stylist friend, Robyn Hollner, who does makeup and wardrobe consultations, along with personal shopping trips to help you find your best style. Â She’s been in the business for over 20 years and knows a lot about this subject. She offered to come over and do an official makeup consultation on me to best determine if I’m wearing the right colors in makeup and my clothing. Â She bases her information on the old Color Me Beautiful book that was so popular in the 80’s that I have talked about on my blog before. Â There is definitely something to the theory that we all fall under Spring, Summer, Fall or Winter colors. Â Summer and Winter are cool undertones and Spring and Fall are warm.
I knew already that I have yellow-based (or warm toned) skin and Robyn helped me hone in on that and get more ideas on my makeup choices. I’m definitely a Spring in color tones. Â I had not totally used all warm tones in my makeup so I think this will help me in the future when I’m choosing new makeup pieces for myself. Â Robyn left me this handy card for Spring colors that will help me when I’m out shopping. Â Colors either have warm or cool undertones in them and I know all of this from choosing paint colors, but I don’t always apply that to my makeup. Â I do pretty well with the colors I wear in my clothing, but now I’ll be more aware in my makeup selections.
Spring has clear warm undertones, so I need to stay away from blue-based pinks and go more towards the coral/orange/rust family to perk up my complexion. Â We need all the help we can get in our 50’s, don’t we?
Meet Robyn. She was so fun to meet and we started talking about warm colors and the process of finding what works on someone. Â As she began draping me to see what colors looked best next to my face, I started to see it for myself. Â It wasn’t always obvious at first, because I’m drawn to favorite colors and colors that I love to wear, like blues and greens. Â Luckily, the colors that I love the most are very prominent on the card and those shades lean to the warm side. Â She did say a lot of blues can be worn by most everyone, like the teal workout top I have on. Â She started with white as a neutral base.
Then, she took fabric swatches and one by one tried them by my face. Â I guess I can wear yellows that are warm, but they aren’t my favorite colors and I have nothing in my closet in this. Â The card shows a very pale yellow for me.
This pink tone is one that I should stay away from, even though I do have some magenta and hot pink in my closet. Â I do get compliments on the deeper pinks on me, so I will probably keep some of them, even though technically they are not my best shade.
Orange reds and corals are good on me and I knew that too from a couple of tops and a dress I have in that shade. Â I don’t usually wear bright orange by itself, but I do have a few prints in this tone.
Like this one from C Wonder that I’ve shared before.
Again, the blue based pinks are not the best for me.
This one seems to be the same one on my card, a deep rusty red, so it should work for me in the warm family.
We determined that beige tones are better next to my face, rather than white-white.
This one was good too, it looks like one on my Warm card, in the deep coral family.
I think this one is too cool, in the pink tones.
This pastel melon is on my card too, so I could wear this, although I do think brighter colors definitely look best on me at this stage of life. Â More color is better!
We then started talking about makeup and enhancing warm tones on the face. Â I definitely need to stick to brighter corals to perk up my face.
She first applied a pink gloss to show me that it really didn’t perk me up that much.  It’s fine, just not the best.
We took that off and then she went for a warmer coral color.
It’s definitely brightens up my face more. I do have a few lipsticks in this family already so that is good.
Next we started talking eye shadow colors and tones.
I have a whole palette of mostly neutral eye shadows that I’ve been using from Urban Decay. She said these are in the cool family (maybe except for the gold/brown in the middle), so even though I’m not throwing this away, I’ll experiment with some warmer tones too.
Warmer tones on the eyes will really make my blue eyes pop with my skin tone. Â I knew not to wear blue on my eyes (although we sure rocked blue back in the 70’s, didn’t we?!). Â I’ve been wearing mostly pinky/beige/brown tones on my eyes for a long time, because I knew that browns would make my eyes stand out more. Â I just need to go more warm with the browns to the copper family.
We experimented with more copper/deep rust shades on my eyes.
I do like them!
My friend, Karen, was having fun with my camera snapping all these pictures, so it made for a lot of laughing along the way.
Deeper shades of rust for the eyelids.
And a few swipes of a bronzer on the face. Â I need to go more coral on my blush too instead of too much brown. Â A little more color just gives us a pick me up as we get older. Â Not a clown face (we’ve all seen those ladies, right?), just a pretty highlight. Â Still use a light hand with the makeup.
I like the coral tones a lot and will definitely be more mindful of this in my new blush selections.
Ready to go shopping for a few new colors!
Consulting with Robin was a lot of fun, so if you are in the Atlanta area and want help with your makeup or wardrobe, you can contact Robyn at RH Image.  Her phone # is 678.262.6039.  You can find all her contact information there as well. She’s a professional in the fashion/makeup industry and has a BS in Fashion Merchandising. She was a delight to meet and consult with.
I’m excited to perk up my makeup with some fresher coral tones and some brighter warm tones for my eyes.
I’ve been experimenting in the last few days and you can see that in these pics. Â More of a copper/peachy tone on my eyes and the lipstick that I’ve shared before, Clinique Glazed Berry. It’s definitely a coral tone and works for me.
This top is the Covered Perfectly 3/4 sleeve that I’ve shared before and this green color definitely works for me. Â I’ll share more of these outfits in a later post, but wanted you to see the makeup.
If you haven’t found out your color tones yet, you may want to do that. It can definitely make a difference in what you wear in clothing and makeup. Â It was a fun process and I would totally recommend Robyn to help you hone in on that if you are in the Atlanta area.
Note: Robyn gave me a free consultation and I told her I would share it on my blog.

What a beauty! Color truly can transform not only our houses but ourselves as well.

What great makeup advice! That was a fun post. It’s funny how some colors just don’t flatter us as well as others. I love green for example but it just doesn’t look as good on me as certain other colors. Best, Silvana

I always thought I was an autumn but someone who does something like Color me Beautiful says I’m a Spring or a “Clear” in her terminology. I guess I’d better go back to the drawing board.
Anne says
I’ve been categorized as three different seasons through the years( autumn, summer, winter- I’m a winter) I had to do research myself before I found my best colors. In my opinion, and I’m not an expert at all, from your picture, you appear to be a clear or maybe a true Winter ( if that’s your real haircolor- and hair color often throws off the color dx). You might want to go to this site that has the 16 color designations and look at the celebrity pictures to find one who most resembles your coloring- it helps a lot! Good luck. http://www.prettyyourworld.com/16-season-color-analysis.html
Rhoda says
Hey, Anne, but Winter is a cool undertone skin and I definitely have a warm tone to mine, more yellow, so I know I’m not a Winter. Spring and Fall are warm tones, so I would be one of those. I think Spring. Robyn just classifies as Warm or Cool in her consultations.
Anne says
My reply was to Marcia…I should have been more specific! I thought I replied under her post.
Rhonda, my niece and step daughter have your same coloring and are Springs. I notice people’s colors right off when I see them and have always known you are a Spring. I sent your website to my sister so she could see the similarity to your coloring and her daughters. The ONLY person I can’t classify is myself- being “mis-diagnosed” as multiple seasons does that to a person!
Sorry for the confusion 🙂
Rhoda says
Oh sorry, you did reply to her and I didn’t realize that. Carry on and ignore my comment!

Great post, Rhoda! Thanks for sharing it with us! You look beautiful…I especially love the last picture…green is definitely a good color for you. Love the new makeup, too.
Stacey says
That’s such a fun way to try out some new colors on your face. Great input too.
Kathy says
I love the color green on you. That sure is your color and loving those curls. However my friend you look good in most anything you put on. I remember having this color chart done on me years ago, didn’t know this make up they sell is still available.
Terri says
What great pointers… and a lot of fun as well… gorgeous !!! AND I love that last pic of you… color of your shirt is beautiful on you and love the hair too!!!! thanks for sharing Rhoda!!!

Hi, I would love to find out what colors are best for me with my hair color, skin tone.
I love reading your post.
Arlene Grimm@Nanaland says
I love coral but being a winter with silver hair, I stay away from it. Like you I love Turquoise colors and I wear a lot of black now along with some jewel toned tops as I need color in my face. I have moved away from a lot of eye make up and concentrate on my cheeks and lips. I read in a fashion magazine that as you age you should concentrate on your eyes or your lips but not both. That was very freeing for me because I was never very good with eye makeup. Now I use a bit of liner and mascara and I am done. I have started using The Balm cream blush and I love it. Looks much better on my skin than powder. I found it via Birch Box. All that said, I agree with you, wear what makes you feel good and you will naturally look good and happy!!

Love that green on you, Rhoda! I am into green for some reason lately. I never wore it much before because people said it made my eyes change long ago. LOL! I use to be a Beauty Control Consultant back in the day when that book was popular. I went to a convention to learn how and the lady at the end left me & another girl out analyzing us to see if anyone could guess why she did that. I fell between the cracks as a winter/summer meaning I could wear winter’s lighter colors & summer’s deeper colors. I have a little booklet like you with swatches to carry also. Like you , I do get lots of compliments on lime green which is not in my summer/winter thing and my mom loves dark brown on me which I think I can do a cocoa brown but that was all. I love your hair in the green shirt too. Fluffy is good on you! I think we need alittle softness around our faces ………my friends wouldn’t tell me until I started going back to a flippier messier bob that they didn’t like the smooth bob on me……..my closest friend used the word, it was too severe -LOL! Thanks for sharing your adventure…….it looked fun!

I agree that the green top really looks good on you. I also think wearing your hair wavy and a little fuller (like in the last pic) is much more flattering. Good choice on the lipstick!!! I am not so sure about that coppery color above the eye crease? I like the lid color.
I am a winter. Me, my mom, my sister and my grandmother – are all winters! My mom and my sis are a bit in between as they have some auburn tones to their hair.

Now that looked fun and I loved the pics of you laughing and enjoying yourself. I gotta say, you look good in anything. I don’t think I have ever seen you look bad in anything you wear. That said, I have never seen that hairstyle on you in the last pic and I LOVE it. Its the fun and always laughing Rhoda I know. 🙂 I love these tips. Its amazing how much our styles change with our age. I know mine has. Have a blessed week, Barb

Haven’t you read that after 55 we shouldn’t wear eye shadow because it falls into the wrinkles and draws attention to them. I would suggest you only use a very neutral shade below your eyebrows, a bit of liner and mascara. Save all those expensive shades for only special occasions. We need to remember we’re not in our 30’s and dress and use makeup appropriately for our age. Just saying.
Lisa B. says
It depends on the woman. However, older women should stay away from too much shimmer if their eyes are ” crepe-y” or they have a lot of wrinkles around them. I don’t, so I do wear some shimmer. There are plenty of matte shades and there are colors that look better on certain eye colors. It is generally not flattering to wear the same shadow color as your eye color, such as blue with blue eyes. Do your research! I do agree that “less is more,” and I usually stick to more natural warm tones during the day, but I will do a smokey eye for a special occasion. The most important thing is having a good foundation by taking care of your skin and using proper skin care. One of the mistakes I see most with makeup is women wearing too much makeup or the wrong colors. Knowing your skin tone and what colors look best on you are key! I’m a nurse and an esthetician, so probably know more about skin and makeup that the average person!
Rhoda says
I agree with Lisa, I’m definitely not giving up eye shadow just because I’m older. I do know that less shimmer is better and I tend to do a little shimmer on the lid, but not so much in the crease. I think we all need definition to the eyes as we get older and lids start drooping. I feel much better when my eyes pop out wearing shadow, liner and mascara. All 3 of those together lend towards accenting the eyes and eyes are one of our best features as we get older.
Bonnie says
One more thing I have heard, Rhoda is people with Spring coloring stay young looking longest so congrats on being a Spring. Lucky you!
Rhoda says
Bonnie, that is good to know! I used to hate my oily skin, but as I’ve gotten older I’m glad I have that too. Hydrates naturally.
Nanci says
Love the new colors on you! The eye makeup and lipstick are perfect. But what I really wanted to say the most was….love that hair do in the green top picture. Dare I say…..it makes you look younger!

Thanks for an interesting and informative post, enjoy reading and especially like all the pictures. You provide so much helpful information for your readers. Like many comments above, love the last picture with green top, and definitely like the curl to your hair, gives you some fullness around face – looks wonderful!
Christina @ The Frugal Homemaker says
Love your hair and that outfit in the last picture with the green top!
I need to work on really nailing down what looks best as far as colors too. It really does make a difference and help when you are shopping or cleaning out your closet.
BlondGirl says
It has really made a difference in my colors. I get more compliments if I wear colors that are in the Summer range. You’ll be surprised what your colors do for your skin tone!

One of my favourite posts! You look like you’re have such a great time; the candids show off your real beauty, something the more posed shots don’t do as well. You look glowing! I love the new make-up and feel you pull off the eyeshadow. It’s just right I don’t think rules about make-up for over 50 or 55 are hard and fast because people’s skin really differs and eyeshadow in the proper tones can help camouflage sagging lids, etc. I say go for it,
I had a friend once who thought I just happened to look good in everything I wore, (I knew this wasn’t the case), until we tried on lipsticks. She was surprised how bad some colours made me look. Fortunately, she had opposite colouring, so we divvied up the freebie stash without a problem!
I love both your hair “do’s”, although I’m always surprised how thick it is. Straightened, it looks very fine and thin. That’s probably accounts for a few of the comments….your natural wave seems livelier, fuller with more movement. You’d look really cute with wispy bangs, too.
Don’t you just love it when we all give our unsolicited suggestions!? We mean them well. 🙂
Thanks for a great and informative post.

I love it! I find myself looking forward to your Wednesday posts. I enjoy seeing your friends (real people) and what they are wearing. I am a 56 yr old curvy girl and you have really given me a boost. I even ordered the black/white vest from Covered Perfectly and love it. Looks like you had fun here and I love all the many “faces” of you.
