Feature Friday: Cape 27

I love seeing all kinds of styles of homes and décor out there in blogland and today’s feature is a humble 1950’s ranch home, Cape 27.  But, don’t let that fool you. Jessica and her hubby have taken this plain non-descript rancher and turned it into a beauty.  They have been renovating their house in Cincinnati, OH since early 2012, almost around the same time I got my house and they have made some great progress in this home. Their style is modern Craftsman and with all their DIY tips and tricks, they have really made this house shine.  They are quite the team, Jessica and Ricky and after moving in the house, they have had 2 more children, bringing their total to 2 girls and one boy.

Enjoy the tour!

exterior

I think many of us grew up in ranch homes in the 60’s and I have a little bit of a soft spot for these brick Americana homes.  My family lived in one for about 10 years when I was growing up and they are great family homes.  I love seeing the younger generation tackle these ranchers and bring them into the 21st century with some creative planning and execution.  Knocking out some walls is usually in order and this couple did just that to open up their rancher to a more open feel.

They added a new railing and front door, giving the home a little bit of Craftsman vibe too.  Love the color of the front door, that happy yellow looks great with the brick and gray/black exterior trim.  Notice the ceiling that was done in palette wood.

Entryway01

Right inside the front door, a modern piece greets guests and functions as the entry way.

living room

The front door opens right into the living room and they’ve made this space cozy and comfortable with modern touches.

living plank wall

Another rustic plank wall adds some texture to this space and I love the mix of colors in here.

living room wall

They’ve used several pieces from Ikea and made them personalized for their space.

living room ladder

This blanket ladder is a nice touch in the living room.

Kitchen BeforeAfter1

Notice the dramatic Before and After photos of the kitchen. Taking down those walls was a much needed improvement and the new Ikea Adel cabinets are beautiful in here.

Kitchen BeforeAfter2

What a difference in this kitchen now.  It’s beautiful!

KitchenFront

With the wall down, there’s room for an island and it really makes this home feel open and spacious.

Range

The range hood is gorgeous and of course, I love the subway tiled backsplash.

Galley

The green and white striped rug adds a nice touch too.

dining

The adjacent dining room got a nice makeover too, with a very modern aesthetic.

dining03 banquette

Adding a built in banquette in here is a nice touch.

girls room2

The two girls now share a room and it’s pretty in pink.

girls room book nook

I love this idea of utilizing a small nook in the room as a floor to ceiling library.  Bring on the books!

boys nursery

The newest addition is a boy, so he get’s the nursery, with shades of blue.

boys nursery 2

Love this repurposed dresser from Craigslist and all the touches in here are beautiful.

nursery rustic shelves

They built an industrial shelving unit and I’ve seen a lot of these in blogland. Great look for a space!

BathProgress01

The bathroom was gutted and everything replaced and it’s a nice and modern bathroom space now.

I love the attention to detail that Jessica and Ricky have taken with their home at Cape 27.  It just goes to show that with a lot of hard work, any older home can be improved upon.  This 1950’s rancher has been updated for the modern century and will serve them well for years to come.

Great job, this was a fun home to tour, don’t you agree?

All I can say is Wow! So many good ideas and I love the eclectic style, especially the mid-century modern pieces. The kitchen is wonderful, too. I have never wanted to live in a ranch although I grew up in one, but I could live in this one.

HI, she won’t see this post, you’ll need to go over to Cape 27 to ask the question there.
