Feature Friday: Sarah’s Summer House

I’m not sure if Sarah Richardson is still on TV or not, but enjoy this feature I did on her many years ago, featuring this summer home she renovated for her family in Canada. It’s a beautiful place and looks totally up to date even now!

************************

I love love designer, Sarah Richardson’s casual, but stylish and elegant way of designing a home.  That girl knows how to do it right from top to bottom and I am DVRing her recent new show, Sarah’s Summer House on HGTV, which is airing once a week, I think.

Her hubby owned this isolated summer home 17 miles offshore before they got married, that is pitched right on top of some rocks and dirt out in the middle of the sea in Canada.  They decided to turn it into a family vacation home and Sarah took us all along on the process.

Wow, did it turn out fantastic!  Wouldn’t it be nice to have a summer home like this?  It’s only accessible by boat.  Talk about getting away from it all.  You could do some relaxing here.

It has been fun tuning in every week to see the transformations Sarah and her sidekick, Tommy are doing on each room.

From painting the walls and ceiling a whitewashed look, which she totally had to talk her hubby into, it’s been a pleasure watching this pregnant mama do her thing in this cottage home.

Love the soothing colors.

Charming kid’s room.

She walked through the process of choosing fabrics and mixing them up to create layers of interest and color throughout the cottage and used mostly green and blue hues to create that beach tranquility.

Lovely colors and fabrics, I think this is a guest room.

This bathroom turned out fantastic. I love how Sarah uses flea market finds and chippy antiques to bring instant charm in a space.  This works every time and can work in our homes too.

Here’s a look at those whitewashed pine walls in the master bedroom.  Her hubby loves reds, so she conceded to bring red fabrics in the master.

The greatroom is multi-functional with seating and dining areas. Notice how she mixed up the chairs around the table for an eclectic look.  Sarah is a master at eclectic.

The kitchen episode was especially interesting, as she found those chippy blue boards that were later set into the front of the island for instant aging and vintage appeal.  Love this!   Those corbels under the island were also a flea market find which she took to the kitchen design folks and said, incorporate these.

Sarah’s style is so easy on the eyes.

I imagine her family will be whiling away some blissful summer days at this island cottage.

Didn’t that just make you breathe a sigh and dream of summer breezes in your own little island getaway?  Me too!

A girl can dream!

Have you caught any episodes of Sarah’s Summer House?  What did you think?

I’ve loved Sarah since I first saw her on Room Service, then Design Inc., and now Sarah’s House/Summer Cottage. Have only seen one episode, the guest rooms, but hope to catch them all over the summer. Thanks for sharing these pics.

I LOVE Sarah Richardson and her shows! Her style is so smooth, casual, and elegant all at the same time. I really like how she tries to make every room pretty but comfortable at the same time. We just bought a house and I would love to recreate some of her style in my rooms! She has a line of paints at Lowe’s in Canada and I wish they carried them in the U.S.

I’ve watched several episodes of the Summer House, and I love Sarah’s style. Sometimes, when things do not go as planned, Sarah just keeps her cool and comes up with Plan B. I admire her for that! The summer “cottage” is beautiful, but getting to and from would be a little scary for me since it is accessible only by boat! I’ve seen Sarah’s re-do of the farmhouse, and I think, one other one. I wonder how many homes they have? Must be nice…

Me too! Love love love that Sarah! I hope HGTV producers will find out how many of us love her shows and put more of them on instead of House Hunters! Ok, I had to get that out of my system! She inspires me to no end and I would pay to be her assistant …Tommy Im not sure about, but he keeps things interesting! Thanks for showing us the finished Summer house, it’s Amazing!

I adore Sarah’s designs and have been watching her Summer House reno. In fact… I love the table and chairs she used in the dining area so much that I’m on the hunt for a farmhouse table and a bench so I can reproduce that look in my kitchen. 🙂

I am also a huge Sarah fan! I never miss her show. The only little twinge of concern I might have about spending summers on an island in the middle of nowhere …. medical emergencies. She is a genius ~ Tommy is wonderful too.

Long been a fan of her decorating style altho I have to say I like her better now than I did years back, she seems more personable now. Loved when she and her husband “settled” on the red for their master! That bathroom is great but I don’t think the kitchen ties in with the more casual, beachy feel of the rest of the cottage, seems a little too urban chic to my mind. I liked the farmhouse reno also, how they revitalized that house was amazing. Thanks for the pics from the show.

I haven’t felt envious of someone in a long time, but that house makes me fantasize about owning it. What a beautiful getaway.

I have watched Sarah here in Canada for years. I just love her style. For those worried about medical emergencies Sarah’s husband is a licensed pilot and flies a float plane in to the cottage. Also its not in the middle of the sea but on Georgian Bay located in Ontario which is the middle of Canada.

I saw some of the episodes. Absolutely love this place!!!

We are making a few changes at the lake. The beadboard paper arrived, love it. We are home again for a day or two. Will spend next week at the lake, hoping to get the paper up, under the cabinets.

Isn’t Tommy a hoot, love the way they get along…..first time I heard of her was through Chris at Just Beachy (another talented gal)….

Have a wonderful week-end, rainy here so we are like Ma & Pa Kettle watching the Red Sox and catching up on emails etc…..LOL

    All the best,
    Kathy 🙂
