Florida Family Room Consultation

Welcome to my new and improved blog!!  So glad you made your way over.

One of my readers, Lisa from Florida, asked for help on her family room, a nice open space adjacent to her kitchen. She sent me pics and gave me ideas on what she was looking for, so I came up with lots of ideas for her space to bring in fabric and warmth on the walls. Lisa loves blues and greens and told me that they are replacing the current sectional with the one you see on the inspiration board, a chocolate brown leather.

Lisa said she was stuck on what to do in this room, but I think with a few changes, this room can really be a standout. First of all, I advised her to move the TV unit to the right at least a foot to get it away from the chair in the corner. The furniture really has to stay in this position, since there’s not a lot of walls in this space, so I’m leaving the new sectional where this one is and the TV on the same wall. I don’t think there’s room to move that chair out of the corner either, so it will stay where it is.

Moving the TV unit to the right will make it visually look a lot better on that wall. I also advised her to add a large piece of artwork to that wall since she has the room. I love the arched doorways they have in their house. That’s a nice feature. I suggested a warm neutral for the walls to flow with the new chocolate brown sofa and to give the room more of a cozy feel. Not too dark, but a medium to light tone of golden tan, such as these : Believable Buff, Whole Wheat, Lenox Tan, Latte

That small wall to under the staircase needs a piece of furniture, so I came up with a booksellers table, which can hold books and a small lamp.

I think that will be the perfect piece for this wall. She could also go with something taller like a regular bookcase.

She will have barstools there at the counter behind the sofa.

Looking towards her foyer. I suggested she get a large mirror over that chest there in the hallway to really open up that space too.

Large wall with the sliding glass doors. Her vertical blinds will have to stay, but I suggested she get a pair of panels and flank the door with them, raising the rods up higher than the wall of windows. To keep it simple, she could use 2 short rods instead of one longer one. I think the fabric will really soften up that wall a lot. She’s going to look at her Ballard Designs store for the panels I show oh the Inspiration Board.

I sent her a very detailed note on all of these changes and then the Inspiration Board I came up with:
