Today’s my daddy’s 86th birthday and we are celebrating with a cookout at my house! I’ll share all of that later this week, I know you’ll want to celebrate with us. 🙂
The tomatoes are rolling in from my parents garden right now and we are loving them! It’s always a treat this time of year to see the red ripe tomatoes being gathered and eaten. My dad is not only a talented carpenter, but his skill at growing veggies can’t be rivaled.
The man knows his way around a garden, that’s for sure.  He grows Better Boy and Roma tomatoes for the most part. They sure are good!
I had my first tomato sandwich just a couple of weeks ago and you can bet that will be a staple around here for the rest of the summer. There’s nothing better!
My mom sent me some green tomatoes that had fallen off the vine and thought that I might want to try some fried green tomatoes. I had never made them at home and this is not something that we really grew up eating, although fried green tomatoes seem to be a Southern staple. They just weren’t in our family. But I have ordered them many times out in restaurants and love them. I put together a recipe using my mom’s instructions and they turned out great!
I decided to take pics halfway through my frying and so here you go. I sliced up the green tomato.
One egg beaten, plus Italian bread crumbs, mixed with all purpose flour. Maybe 3 TBS of each. This is an on the fly recipe. I dipped the tomato slices in egg batter, then dredged it in the bread crumbs/flour mixture, and plopped them into a non-stick frying pan with a little olive oil in the bottom.
Let it brown on both sides, Medium/High heat and they will brown up nicely.
And here’s what they looked like when I took them off. I ate them with some fresh tomato salsa and they were delish! I will definitely do them again!
Have you ever made fried green tomatoes?
I love eating fried green tomatoes AND watching the movie called Fried Green Tomatoes. lol
I just had my first taste of fried green tomatoes at Tupelo Honey Café in Asheville, NC two weeks ago. They were served over goat cheese grits with fresh basil and they were divine!
Oh I have been to Tupelo Honey, great food!!
Happy Birthday to your wonderful dad. He is an inspiration. I am also a Southerner and my mother and grandmother cooked fried green tomatoes now and then- they weren’t a staple at our house, either. We also had a huge garden and I really miss all that fresh food.
Happy Birthday to your sweet dad! The fried green tomatoes sound heavenly.
Happy Birthday to your Dad!
Happy Birthday to your wonderful dad! What a blessing to have both of your parents that still have reasonably good health and great life-skills!!! The tomatoes look delicious. I usually use cornmeal for the breading and cook them in a little oil just like fried okra!
PS. I can’t wait to meet you at Haven!
I love fried green tomatoes but have never made them. I have a ton of tomatoes coming in and will definitely try this-I love eating them with remoulade sauce!
I love them with ranch dressing-to die for. Happy Birthday to your dad—he is somewhat special… 🙂
I’m not southern, but I love fried green tomatoes…yummy!
Nana doesn’t like fried green tomatoes. That’s why we never have them. She’ll make them though if you put in a request.
I didn’t grow up eating them either. Never tasted them until I was an adult in my 40’s. Boy was I ever missing out! They are delicious. It’s so easy to make them. Thank goodness there are many restaurants here (Lakeland, Fl) that have it on their menus. I order it whenever I can.
Lori,
I’m in Lake Wales, FL. Hi! I LOVE my fried green tomatoes but am ALWAYS on the look out for good ones in restaurants. The closest I ever came, in flavor duplication, was Brothers BBQ in Murphy, NC. I would be thrilled to know which restaurants you know of in/around Lakeland that have FGTs. The only place in Lake Wales I’ve found them is Crazy Fish Bar and Grill. Thanks in advance!
Happy Birthday to Dad and Happy Eating Rhoda!
Barbara
Happy Birthday to your father! He is quite the gardener! I’ve never made fried green tomatoes and have been on the hunt for recipes. Yours sounds perfect. Some have mentioned adding cornmeal. Either way. I’m going to try them!
XO,
Jane
Never tried them but always wanted to.
God’s blessings on you father! He is indeed special.
Pass my best wishes on to your father!!
And those tomatoes look great- so hard to buy good ones!
Tell your darling father Happy Birthday!!
My husband makes the best fried green tomatoes. He slices them and sprinkles the slices with salt and lets them sit before he fries them. They are the best! I love them dipped in a horseradish/bleu cheese dressing.
I picked some green tomatoes yesterday so that I could do a post on Fried Green Tomatoes! A gift from the garden, I tell ya! Tell your dad that another fan of his is wishing him a happy birthday!
There is nothing better than fresh tomatoe sandwhiches from the garden! Happy Birthday to your Dad – I imagine you all had fun celebrating!
Happy birthday to your amazing father. He sure is a superman of a dad. I tried fried green tomatoes because I loved the movie so much but to actually eat them I wasn’t a big fan. Maybe the key is having a dipping sauce.
First of all…Happy Happy Birthday to your wonderful dad!
Now, to those tomatoes. Ours are a tad slow! The cherry tomatoes are ripening nicely but the others aren’t ready yet. We found some Illinois and Arkansas tomatoes at our grocery store, so we’ve had our first tomato sandwiches of the season…however, as good as they are they aren’t quite the same as the ones with our own tomatoes.
I was thinking about making a batch of fried green tomatoes the other day. Perhaps I will do that today, to go with our new potatoes, green beans and corn on the cob.:-) Doesn’t that sound good?
Happy Birthday to the handiest Dad of all!
