{GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED}
The winner is: #262: Chelsea Duncan!
Our Lowe’s challenge this month was to spruce up an outdoor area and give it more curb appeal. I knew instantly what I would do and that is, change out these pitiful light fixtures. Lowes has some really nice ones for not a lot of money.
I picked out these two beauties and they were $40 each. Not bad at all for adding that curb appeal.
This pretty little black lantern will go over the front door.
I got out the ladder and started taking down the old fixture. If you have been following my blog for awhile, you know that I am not afraid to tackle light fixtures and changed out every light fixture in my old house myself. It’s not hard once you get the hang of it. I’ll show you more on that below.
The old one came down. YAY!
And the new one went up. Look how cute it looks with my glass front door!
It’s very simple and elegant with seeded glass.
Here’s are simple instructions on DIYing your own light fixtures. Someone asked me this and YES, turn OFF the power to your lightswitch by turning off the breaker. I will confess, that I sometimes just make sure the switch is in the OFF position on the wall and that stops the power from coming through too, but that is not the proper way to do it. Do as I say, not as I do. Be safe!
Here’s the back porch fixture. I thought I’d show you how easy it is to connect these. Black wire to black wire and white one to white. Wrap the copper ground wire around the little screw that is marked Ground. Screw the plate in and line up the bolts. ![]()
The base of the fixture has holes that the screws slide through and then the cap nut goes on top.
Much better, don’t you think?
Beautiful and simple Craftsman style fixture and now the porch will look SO much better. I can hardly wait to get on this porch to enjoy it all!
And Lowes is giving away to ONE of my readers a $100 giftcard to help you out with a project of your own! What will you spend your giftcard on if you win?
Do you have an outdoor project you’d like to do soon? Tell me in the comments and I’ll choose a winner in a few days!
Note: I received a Lowes giftcard to complete my outdoor project.

I really like the fixture that you chose for your back door…it looks very different from the one in the store! Since I bought my outside lights (for the garage) last weekend–I would love to have some yard lighting!
Oh How many projects I have going on that I could use that card on!
An umbrella to go with our picnic table….my poor husband’s head is getting so sunburned, but he wants to be outside so badly and won’t wear a hat!
Our deck is in dire need of stain, as well as needing a few boards replaced.
We have so many outside projects that I want to do….. The next thing I want to get is an outdoor rug for our patio!!
To be honest, I would use the money to buy our young neighbors pavers to help fix up their outside patio. They are such a sweet couple, that has started their family and they need so much to make their home perfect for their family!!
I would spend it on finishing up our landscaping project for the front yard.
Love your new light fixtures! I would spend the gift card towards patio furniture.
Our son just built a beautiful Portico for the front of our home to give it some character and like you,I need some lighting now! Love the pretty fixture you found!
Trying to get the C/O ….so we can move in. We need ALL of our light fixtures. This would certainly HELP get us started!!
I would like to fix up my front porch.. stain the concrete and put new wood up on the ceiling.. Would LOVE to get some plants out there as well!! Oh, and OF COURSE a new light!! Ours looks much like yours did and we’ve lived in this house for 13 years!! So due for some MAJOR curb appeal makeover..
I would like to add some new pillows and cushions to our outdoor furniture.
We have already scheduled some time off to redo our landscape in the front yard, we would buy some plants. Thank you and Lowes for the giveaway.
Your new light fixtures look great!!
I was just thinking of replacing the front entrance lights that are on my parents’ house, and a giftcard would really be nice!! Thanks for the opportunity to win one!
I need to replace a few plants that have already withered up and died in the AZ heat!
I’m buying my first house this summer. I’ll definitely be putting that $100 Lowe’s card into buying the tools necessary to do some household repairs and yardwork.
So many projects! I really need to create large flower boxes out of retaining wall block. One on either side of the stairs leading to the deck.
There’s ALWAYS more work to be done in the garden!
Hey Rhoda, This is so timely because we are having our house painted on the outside now. The light fixtures we bought have not faired as well as we thought they would, so I’m painting them today with hammered spray paint. This is a perfect post for the non-electrical peeps out there. Thank you!
Our house needs so many things! I am wanting to change out the old (old, old) outdated copper light (one that you can pull down for more light and push up again–except it kinda hangs funny now) above our kitchen table. I could find a new one (with change to spare for a few flowers?).
Love your new lights! So charming =)
