Outdoor Curb Appeal: Lowes $100 Giveaway!

{GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED}

The winner is:  #262: Chelsea Duncan!

Our Lowe’s challenge this month was to spruce up an outdoor area and give it more curb appeal. I knew instantly what I would do and that is, change out these pitiful light fixtures. Lowes has some really nice ones for not a lot of money.

Lowes lights

I picked out these two beauties and they were $40 each. Not bad at all for adding that curb appeal.

007

This pretty little black lantern will go over the front door.

008

I got out the ladder and started taking down the old fixture. If you have been following my blog for awhile, you know that I am not afraid to tackle light fixtures and changed out every light fixture in my old house myself. It’s not hard once you get the hang of it. I’ll show you more on that below.

012

The old one came down.  YAY!

021

And the new one went up. Look how cute it looks with my glass front door!

022

It’s very simple and elegant with seeded glass.

Here’s are simple instructions on DIYing your own light fixtures.  Someone asked me this and YES, turn OFF the power to your lightswitch by turning off the breaker.  I will confess, that I sometimes just make sure the switch is in the OFF position on the wall and that stops the power from coming through too, but that is not the proper way to do it.  Do as I say, not as I do.  Be safe!

015

Here’s the back porch fixture. I thought I’d show you how easy it is to connect these. Black wire to black wire and white one to white. Wrap the copper ground wire around the little screw that is marked Ground. Screw the plate in and line up the bolts. 016

The base of the fixture has holes that the screws slide through and then the cap nut goes on top.

024

Much better, don’t you think?

025

Beautiful and simple Craftsman style fixture and now the porch will look SO much better. I can hardly wait to get on this porch to enjoy it all!

And Lowes is giving away to ONE of my readers a $100 giftcard to help you out with a project of your own!  What will you spend your giftcard on if you win?

Do you have an outdoor project you’d like to do soon?  Tell me in the comments and I’ll choose a winner in a few days!

Note:  I received a Lowes giftcard to complete my outdoor project.

We are refurbishing our outdoor space with little cash! I cannot afford to replace my 10 year old patio set – so the plan is to make a new tabletop and repaint/repair the existing chairs. Also, we are shifting our grilling area and adding an old dorm size refrigerator. Plus – if I can get my dollars to stretch that far – some patio flower boxes. So I would use that $100 to see how far I can take my refurbishing plan.

I had a fixture just like the one over your front door. Lovely! I also need to replace the fixture on the front porch ceiling. Very dated for sure.

We have a small screened in porch at the back of the house. The screens have so many holes that we might as well have no screens in. I would love to replace the screens and add a nice outdoor rug to the area.

Love your new lighting, Rhoda! And your pretty black door! Been wanting new outside lighting for forever. And new cushions for our patio furniture. But new lighting in the front would be my first pick since it is just too dark when people are approaching our house.

I have TONS of things to do outside. I also need outdoor fixtures on our walk out basement patio. I need to paint my shutters, fence, and blocks, and the list can go on and on.

I love the fixtures you picked out!

Alas, the dog went to the Great Dog Park in the Sky, but our kitchen floor still bears his (clawing paw) marks. Tiling supplies, please!

We have been in our home for the past 19 1/2 years. While raising three children, updating our house inside and outside was not a high on the list. We do need to replace our old light above the garage and the recess light that is about our front door. I never liked the recess light and would like to jazz it up. Our door bell was rung so often with kids that wanted to play that our door bell does not work. It would be nice to replace the door bell :-).

Love the fixtures you chose. Love the work on your house. Can’t wait to see the complete reveal.

Your new lights look great, really add a warmth to the doorways. Like so many others we have lived in our home for awhile and have not changed the generic fixtures that were already there. One thing that has stopped me was price, I have searched so many sites and have not found an attractive, reasonably prices colonial style fixture that would complement our home. Will go and look through Lowes’ selection right now, I am always in there for something!

Your new light fixtures look great! When we bought our house we switched all of ours out too. Lowe’s is a second home to me. I’d love to win! We still have fluorescent lighting in the kitchen that I want to switch out. I would use the gift card for that project.

So many, many ways I could use that Lowes gift card. I think my most immediate need would be to help me finish up my master bedroom remodel … that $100 would really kick-start a project that has sputtered and stalled!

    🙂

P.S. Rhoda, did I eye spy some board and batten plans in the dining room? That 3/4 up the wall primer has me thing B&B …

We are in ‘desperate’ need of 6 outdoor fixtures so this Lowe’s gift would be fabulous.
