Outdoor Curb Appeal: Lowes $100 Giveaway!

{GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED}

The winner is:  #262: Chelsea Duncan!

Our Lowe’s challenge this month was to spruce up an outdoor area and give it more curb appeal. I knew instantly what I would do and that is, change out these pitiful light fixtures. Lowes has some really nice ones for not a lot of money.

Lowes lights

I picked out these two beauties and they were $40 each. Not bad at all for adding that curb appeal.

007

This pretty little black lantern will go over the front door.

008

I got out the ladder and started taking down the old fixture. If you have been following my blog for awhile, you know that I am not afraid to tackle light fixtures and changed out every light fixture in my old house myself. It’s not hard once you get the hang of it. I’ll show you more on that below.

012

The old one came down.  YAY!

021

And the new one went up. Look how cute it looks with my glass front door!

022

It’s very simple and elegant with seeded glass.

Here’s are simple instructions on DIYing your own light fixtures.  Someone asked me this and YES, turn OFF the power to your lightswitch by turning off the breaker.  I will confess, that I sometimes just make sure the switch is in the OFF position on the wall and that stops the power from coming through too, but that is not the proper way to do it.  Do as I say, not as I do.  Be safe!

015

Here’s the back porch fixture. I thought I’d show you how easy it is to connect these. Black wire to black wire and white one to white. Wrap the copper ground wire around the little screw that is marked Ground. Screw the plate in and line up the bolts. 016

The base of the fixture has holes that the screws slide through and then the cap nut goes on top.

024

Much better, don’t you think?

025

Beautiful and simple Craftsman style fixture and now the porch will look SO much better. I can hardly wait to get on this porch to enjoy it all!

And Lowes is giving away to ONE of my readers a $100 giftcard to help you out with a project of your own!  What will you spend your giftcard on if you win?

Do you have an outdoor project you’d like to do soon?  Tell me in the comments and I’ll choose a winner in a few days!

Note:  I received a Lowes giftcard to complete my outdoor project.

I am working on the outside. I would spend $100.00 on mulch, some new hand tools to trim with, some new gloves to spread the mulch with.

I’m in need of a new fixture in my breakfast room. I have a one story home which makes most of the living area visible when you come in the front door and its one of the first things you notice when you look into the kitchen area. The current one is way too small for the table and provides little to no light! Its so fun watching you and your Dad (and Mom too) remodeling your new home. Best wishes and can’t wait to see the final pictures.

Those lights are lovely, and I especially like the one you put over your front door. If I won the Lowe’s gift card I’d continue adding to the little garden my mom & I have been working on in a tiny pocket area of our front yard. It is separated from the main portion of the yard by a sidewalk, then framed by rail fence and butts right up to the front of our home. I’m in the process of taking out the lawn (it’s only about 14’x16′ in there, so not fun to mow at all) and putting in flowers & other plants. I have a glazed stoneware birdbath, and we just put in a raised bed so I can plant strawberries. So if I do win, I’d get the stepping stones, crushed rock, and some border flowers to finish it out.

I just bought a 170 year old house and am on a budget. I would buy fancy textured wallpaper for my bedroom ceiling.

OOooo – I chose that seeded glass light fixture for my last home!

Let’s see – what does my cosmetic fixer upper home need next? Everything! But I’ll focus on changing the countertops in the kitchen first. The gift card would help towards that!

Love the new lights and what you’ve done to the your home. Can’t wait to see the dining room finished. I would love to replace my bathroom light or medicine cabinet with a mirror. They both need updating. Thanks so much for a chance to win a gift card from Lowe’s.

Rhoda, I love how well your light goes with your front door! I have a lot of projects lined up, but one I want to jump on fast before it gets too hot is to stain the floor of our deck and paint the handrails. Lowe’s is my home away from home, so a gift card would be very welcome!

WOW! We just moved into a late 1800’s farmhouse, so for me the possibilities are endless! Flowers for my wrap around porch, beadboard for the bathroom, curtains, plantation blinds, doorbells, full view storm door…and, the list goes on & on. Lots to do, but enjoying every second of it!

Love watching you transform your house. If I won the gift card, I’d use it on paint. I always need paint. And maybe some wallpaper. I’d like to wallpaper the inside of my closet.

My daughter’s house could use a new bathroom vanity and that would help out big time. Unless we put it towards the light fixture for the ugly bathroom from hell in said bathroom. So many decisions as to where to put it to good in in that awful bathroom.

Rhoda, what a difference new lighting makes! Now your doors say welcome! If I won, I would replace some outdoor lighting as well on my back porch or the lighting in my back stairwell which currently looks kinda like the one over your door basically just a bulb!

I would spend that gift card in the garden center. We are taking out our foundation plantings across the front of the house and that $100 would help.
I love your new lights and watching you re do of this home.
    You are an amazing person.
    Hugs,
    Donna

Several years ago for Mother’s day my sweet husband and children got me new brass light fixtures for the front door, I would use the Lowes GC to replace the nasty old one one either side of my garage doors. They are original 20 year old builders grade and ugly!
