{GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED}
The winner is: #262: Chelsea Duncan!
Our Lowe’s challenge this month was to spruce up an outdoor area and give it more curb appeal. I knew instantly what I would do and that is, change out these pitiful light fixtures. Lowes has some really nice ones for not a lot of money.
I picked out these two beauties and they were $40 each. Not bad at all for adding that curb appeal.
This pretty little black lantern will go over the front door.
I got out the ladder and started taking down the old fixture. If you have been following my blog for awhile, you know that I am not afraid to tackle light fixtures and changed out every light fixture in my old house myself. It’s not hard once you get the hang of it. I’ll show you more on that below.
The old one came down. YAY!
And the new one went up. Look how cute it looks with my glass front door!
It’s very simple and elegant with seeded glass.
Here’s are simple instructions on DIYing your own light fixtures. Someone asked me this and YES, turn OFF the power to your lightswitch by turning off the breaker. I will confess, that I sometimes just make sure the switch is in the OFF position on the wall and that stops the power from coming through too, but that is not the proper way to do it. Do as I say, not as I do. Be safe!
Here’s the back porch fixture. I thought I’d show you how easy it is to connect these. Black wire to black wire and white one to white. Wrap the copper ground wire around the little screw that is marked Ground. Screw the plate in and line up the bolts. ![]()
The base of the fixture has holes that the screws slide through and then the cap nut goes on top.
Much better, don’t you think?
Beautiful and simple Craftsman style fixture and now the porch will look SO much better. I can hardly wait to get on this porch to enjoy it all!
And Lowes is giving away to ONE of my readers a $100 giftcard to help you out with a project of your own! What will you spend your giftcard on if you win?
Do you have an outdoor project you’d like to do soon? Tell me in the comments and I’ll choose a winner in a few days!
Note: I received a Lowes giftcard to complete my outdoor project.

I would love to be able to finish up some landscaping projects in my garden!
I would love to update my porch with some new lights too.
I was just saying yesterday I wished I knew how to change out my front porch light! Now I do! 😉
And that is EXACTLY what I would spend a Lowe’s Gift card on 🙂
My Grand Lady needs some new swag
It has been fun to see the progress you are making on your new home, thank you for sharing with us. I could really use new light fixtures for the front of my house. Thanks for offering such a great give away.
A new trellis for my front flower bed would really finish off all the work we have been doing so far this spring.
Oh, I do love cruising the aisles at Lowes. I always have some sort of project going and love to find something new to incorporate. Just lately I’ve spent too much time in the lawn and garden dept.
We in in the process of replacing the front door and the storm door and remodeling the family room. I would use the $100 toward that. I already have a beautiful front door picked out. Leaded glass in craftsman style all the way down. Will be so beautiful and let in so much light!
Hi Rhoda,
I would do what you did and get rid of my pitiful builder-grade light next to the back door and replace it with something pretty and more substantial. I never even thought about it to tell you the truth until I saw what you did. And I’ll do it myself, now that I know how. Thanks so much for the inspiration and the tutorial! Your house is coming along so nice and I’m so very happy for you.
I would probably use my gift card for some matchstick blinds for the bedroom. BTW, your house is going to be absolutely adorable! I love seeing all your reveals.
We are winding up the remodel of a half bath, so a gift card would really come in handy. I have my eye on a mirror at Lowe’s that would complete the project.
If I were to win the Lowes card it would definitely go towards outdoor light fixtures in my backyard, which is pitch black and scary at night.
Have you seen the ProvenWinner potted plant refillers at Lowes? The flower combinations are just gorgeous. I bought a few for Mother’s Day gifts. If I won the gift card I would go back and buy some for myself.
Paint, paint & more paint!!
We are currently working in our garden. We make multiple weekly trips to Lowe’s for EVERYTHING! Ha! Who am I kidding, sometimes daily! We are soon to start building a pergola. A gift card would be a wonderful help! Love seeing the progress of your new home. So very pleased for you! We are not far from you in Columbus. Would love to meet you sometime. I am an Interior Designer, professional ASID. : )
i have a ton of outdoor projects to do! and indoor ones too! we are building a house and we are doing every thing- from the ground up!- all by ourselves. so this is very needed!
Paint for the front door, boards to replace the decayed area of the porch, hand sander…. the list is endless.
I just put a perennial bed in my front yard and spruced up the front garden. I hope to also refresh my front porch and think some solar lights along the walkway would make a difference.
love those! would love some new outdoor fixtures as well…as well as an outdoor rug for our back porch!
If I won the Lowe’s gift card, I would purchase a new back splash for my kitchen stove. I am new to your blog and absolutely love it! My husband is disabled and no longer able to do home repairs. You are giving me the confidence I need to tackle it myself!
I need things for my planting beds, flowers and mulch. My yard is looking a little shabby, okay a lot shabby!
Thanks for hosting!!
