Stealing Magnolias: Tales from a New Orleans Courtyard

{Giveaway is Closed}

Blogging has had some wonderful perks for me and one of them is that I get asked to do book reviews on beautiful books. Books that I might never come across otherwise. This new book, Stealing Magnolias: Tales from a New Orleans Courtyard, recently landed in my mailbox and it is truly a beautiful and inspiring coffee table book that I think you will love.Especially if you enjoy visiting New Orleans.  I’ve been to that historic city a handful of times and always enjoy the architecture, food (can you say beignets?), and ambiance.

Author Debra Shriver is an Alabama native, who now splits her time between New York City and a historic old home in New Orleans.  She’s an admitted Francofile, and avid photography collector, a devotee of jazz, and a passionate preservationist. Whether it’s food, gardens, decor, decoration, architecture or design, this book engages the reader to experience every element of one of the world’s most romantic cities.  Debra shares pics of her own Vieux Carre home in New Orleans that she has lovingly collected for and decorated.

Readers will find themselves enthralled by exploring a unique and lavish compilation of original works by more than twenty photographers and artists who share her vision, such as George Rodrigues (known for his Blue dog paintings)and best-selling author and “Queen of Junk” Mary Randolph Carter.

You can find copies of the book here, if you’re interested in purchasing.

I’ll be going to New Orleans again in just a week for the first time since Katrina hit.  My niece is having a wedding shower down there.  She moved there last summer, after getting a job and apartment and promptly got engaged to a guy she went to law school with and has been dating for well over a year.  Her wedding is coming up in March and she will settle with her new hubby in New Orleans.  I’ll definitely be sharing the wedding details with you too.

This truly is a beautiful book that you would be proud to own.  The editors are offering ONE of my readers the chance to enjoy your very own copy of  Stealing Magnolias (retail value $60).

All you have to do is leave a comment!  Have you been to New Orleans before and what did you enjoy MOST about this historic city?

I love the beignets and can’t wait to sit at Cafe Du Monde nibbling on those delicate treats and a creamy cup of coffee.

Ah! New Orleans! The architecture, the intrigue, the mystery, the romance, the fragrance and the aromas of the foods . . . .
Always have I been a New Orleanean at heart. Only four short years I lived there, back when the world was young. Each time I return brings floods of memories, and always I am as reluctant to leave as the day back in 1968 when I moved away . . . but my heart remained and is there yet. Each book I read about the city is rapidly devoured and savored. New Orleans memorabelia, art ~ prints and sketches ~ have been collected through the years and now each room of my current home has gentle reminders of a time long gone by ~ when I lived and loved in my beloved New Orleans.

What a beautiful book! I love New Orleans – especially Jackson Square when all the artists are out displaying and selling their artwork. I love the culture and history. Oh, and the food! =)

We spent our honeymoon there in 1971! We enjoyed Commanders Palace then and two years ago in their new location.

I love New Orleans…the food, the glorious buildings, the horse drawn carriages, the flowers, the jazz at Preservation Hall. I could go on and on but my favorite New Orleans memory is the wonderful week I spent there with my husband in October of 1998; within a month we found out he was terminally ill and a short year later he was gone. Somehow New Orleans helped sustain us through a difficult time.

Ahhh, memories of the wonderful good ole days… was already thinking about those beignets and coffee cause CG is there this week…. Brennans and Galatoire’s, Commander’s Palace… all awesome back in the days….. growing up in Lafayette… it was a short 2 hour and some drive… Like JLB above, I haven’t been in tooo long but I always preferred going in cold weather, when a cup of hot gumbo was sooo welcome. Incidentally, my father sold art supplies to, and also framed, many of George Rodrigues early works for him, which usually included scenes of the Cajuns eating… a favorite pastime there for good reason…. and other outdoor activities… they are much more appealing than the Blue Dog to me for the stories they tell… I would so love having this book to” take me back “….. thanks for this giveaway!
As the locals would say-” hope you pass a good time, Cherie!

Many years ago, we went to NO. Had a unique experience eating at K-Paul’s restaurant.
Would love to go back. The beignets were wonderful early morning when most folks
were still in their houses. Hardly anyone on the streets. Love your blogspot, great
    giveaway.

I loved the cemeteries! We went on a guided tour and the stories about the cemeteries were fascinating! And then, of course, the food was fabulous!

One thing I do remember about the South is the lovely, fragrance of LEMON from the blooms of the magnolia tree. I grew up in North Carolina and there were three magnolias planted in our front yard…I have never had the pleasure of visiting New Orleans, but let me assure you that when I do someday, I will definitely indulge in beignets and coffee! Sounds like heaven!!!!! 🙂
Please enter me in the Stealing Magnolias book give-away…it would be a delight to win!!

Too many memories to list …but for just a few… With my Mom and Aunt as a little girl; World’s Fair with a dear friend; taking my young son and best friend antiquing and the cemeteries; heat stroke one summer – spent the whole time in bed; the best po-boy I ever ate…then helping Katrina victims get back on their feet when they fled to Dallas. The book would be lovely! Thank you for your generosity!
