Homemade Pizza

Recently, I tried out the fresh pizza dough that Publix carries in their bakery department.  Have you seen it?  It’s a big ball of raw dough in a plastic bag, all ready for baking.  I have made my own crust before, but for about $2.50, I like this even better than mixing my own.

We absolutely loved it!  Being partial to veggies, that’s all I usually put on our pizza, so you can pile it all on and it’s a meal.

Spread the dough out and roll with a rolling pin to get it nice and flat.  If you have a pizza stone, all the better.  I used my rectangular one the first time and will do that again next time, but I think those stones can only be used up to 450*, that’s what I’ve read.  But, that’s hot enough  for pizza.  I tried it this time on my cookie sheet at 500* and it stuck slightly, so back to the stone for me next time.Add your fave pizza sauce. I sauteed some fresh veggies in a pan to add to the pizza:  spinach, onions, mushrooms and green peppers, all our favorites. Add it all to the pizza.  I also added some Kalamata olives that I love too.  Those small cans come from Walmart and I try to keep them on hand for lots of things. Found the pizza sauce at Publix too, Dei Fratelli.Add slices of fresh mozzarella and it’s ready to bake.Out of the oven, nice and golden brown.  I had some fresh tomatoes from our garden, as well as fresh basil, so I sliced those up for the top.

Can you tell it was just yummy?!  Well, it totally was.  This will be a favorite way to eat pizza from now on and will join our weekly menu plan. Much better than any frozen we’ve tried. I’ve tried the premade crusts too and this is even better than those to us.

Give it a try and let me know what you think!  Have any of you tried it yet?

Adding to Jen’s Tasty Tuesday.

Your pizza looks delicious! No Publix markets here. We frequently make homemade pizza dough in the bread machine.

Oh boo! We don’t have Publix in AZ but I remember it well when I lived in Georgia.

I was trying to catch up on my reading and just LOVED the post on How long do you keep your fabrics. Given that I graduated and was in college in 1986 I was rocking a similarly sweet hairdo but in brown.
I had the country blue and mauve faze followed by the burgandy and hunter green. Right now? White, cream, sand, sigh. Love it. 🙂

We make homemade pizza quite often. We don’t have Publix so I get our dough from Trader Joe’s for $.99! You can’t beat it and I love that we can make a healthier pizza than what you’d order.

That pizza looked fantastic! My husband and I make pizza nearly once a week together…it all started with Publix pizza dough! Before we moved to the Land of No Publix (sad, sad day), we found whole wheat dough, too. Cooks up just as well!

Yum, the veggie pizza looks fabulous! I also made home made pizza this weekend but used my stone. I found instructions on another blog about how to use the stone and tried it. The crust turned out the best it ever had. Here is a link to the tips. http://butteryum.blogspot.com/2010/05/10-secrets-for-making-pizzeria-quality.html

Gina, great tips from Patricia on making pizza at home. She is very detailed, thanks for sharing the link. I broke my PC pizza stone, so must get another one. I do have a rectangle PC cookie stone that works well too.

Rhoda – you’re killing me… I have been gluten free for 30+ years and I miss pizza terribly. Usually a purchaser of the frozen kind – I might just have to give in to my family and prepare this for them. Looks yummy.

When we lived in Homewood we bought the Publix Pizza dough ALL the time. It works great for stromboli and calzones too.
But now we live in Mobile and you should have seen the look on the face of the lady that worked at Winn-Dixie behind the cookie counter when I asked her if they had pizza dough…we don’t have a Publix on this side of the bay…rumors of one coming soon though!

Saw this at my Publix bakery and wondered if it was good. Wish they made it in whole wheat dough but I’ll have to try this anyway.

I love to make pizza too. Sometimes when I have the girls over we all make our own personal pan pizzas and enjoy them with some good red wine ( and lots of giggles)! I love white pizza even more than red!

I think at 450* it took about 25-30 minutes. I just watch it until it looks brown enough.

We’ve had the pizza crust from Publix’s bakery quite a lot. Our friends and neighbors have pizza parties. They provide the dough and the drinks and everyone else brings different toppings. Each couple makes their own to share. They have two ovens so we get two cooking at a time. It’s always fun.

    Hugs,
    Kat

I don’t have publix, but we love trader joe’s dough. It comes in regular, whole wheat or garlic and herb (our fave) for about $1 I think.

I wish we had Trader Joe’s! I’d buy whole wheat in a minute if I could find it.

We love to grill our pizza. If you haven’t tried it, it’s amazing! I buy my dough at Sam’s Club. It comes frozen and you just have to let it rise. It is really good and less than a dollar a ball. I did a post about it here, if you are interested. http://www.unexpectedelegance.com/?p=22

Hi Rhonda – thanks for stopping by. Thanks for visiting my blog, and thanks to Gina above for posting a link to my pizza post. Your pizza turned out beautifully and I’m wishing I had a plate full right now!

To answer your question, I didn’t picture a pizza peel because I don’t have one. I found 2 nice ones at TJ Maxx the other day, but they they were made of some kind of hardwood, which meant they weighed a ton so I didn’t buy them. They’re usually very lightweight and made from a pine like wood. You can find them in kitchen catalogs and sometimes kitchenware stores. Do a google search for Pizza Peel and you’ll see what they are.

Oh, sorry to hear about your pizza stone – it’s stinks when they break, especially after they get all nice and brown from use.

    🙂
