Pretty Knobs

Picture 025

These cruddy knobs have been in our bathroom about 4 years now and I kept staring at them, knowing they needed to go.  Just wasn’t sure which direction I wanted to go with them.  See, when we first moved in here, I tried to go with silver tones in here and after trying these knobs in silver first, decided ehhhhh, didn’t like that color. It just went dead in here, in spite of the blue walls which usually look good with silver.

And so, as most good DIY divas do, I painted the knobs.  Only you can see that they didn’t last too long and the bronze started rubbing off. That’s the problem with painting things that get touched a lot.  It usually doesn’t last.

Did you know about the knobs from Hobby Lobby? They now carry a TON of beautiful and decorative knobs for bathroom, dressers, kitchens, that cute piece of furniture you just finished painting.  They are very Anthropologie-like knobs.

There are so many colors and styles to choose from.   Priced from around $2.99 to $5.99 each, they put them on sale at 1/2 off about once a month, which of course I waited for.

Picture 092

LOVE these monogram black and white ones.  Where could you use one of these?

Picture 091

Ador-ABLE!

Picture 093

Fleur de lis are oh, so chic.

Picture 094

And there are several vintage style glass ones to choose from, from small to large. This is just a fraction of what they carry.

So, I hunted down the blues and found THESE for our master bath.  They are perfect!

Picture 005

See how cute they are with the rug?

Picture 006

Love, love them.  I found these rugs at Ballard Designs, by the way.  It was hard to find these colors 3 or 4 years ago, but I do believe that blue is making a comeback.

Picture 022

I’ll tell you a little bit of my thinking in this room.  We have this brass shower surround, which I guarantee you is not going anywhere.  As much as I’d love to have a seamless glass shower surround, there is nothing wrong with this one, so I concentrate on things that need changing the most.   I choose my battles wisely, and this ain’t it .  I can live with this brass.  I mentioned that I almost went silver in here with the hardware, but with the warm brass, it just made more sense to go with antique gold in here.

Just because someone will ask, the wall color here is Kilz Magellan, from Walmart.

Picture 014

And we have a mix of brass and chrome on the faucets, tub, shower and sinks.  I’m pretty sure those aren’t going anywhere either.  So, this is a lesson in learning to live with what you have.

Picture 008

We’ll keep the brass surround.

Picture 009

I painted my towel holders and hooks in an antique gold color when we first moved in.

Picture 012

Painted this glass shelf and the tops of those glass jars, all antique gold.  And with the bamboo blinds and the rugs, it all works well together, I think.

Picture 023

I replaced the light fixtures with these pretty antiquey bronzey gold ones.  The ones that were in the house were really ugly, shiny brass.  This gold I really like.   So, instead of fighting with the gold and brass in here, I embraced it.  And I like the way it’s all come together.

Picture 019

I found this pretty striped fabric last summer for $3 a yard and have BIG plans to sew some pretty toppers for my bamboo blinds in here.  Don’t have it completely figured out, but it will probably be very simple, maybe stapled on a board above the window.  Now that I have a sewing machine, I can do this.   And even though the stripe is more yellowy than the rug, I think it will all be pretty together, once they are hung up.  I also have plans to add some beadboard wallpaper in the water closet with chair rail.

So, you can see I’m still tweaking in the master bath.  A little bit of progress at a time and it will be finished.  Those knobs just got things rolling once again and I’ll tackle the rest soon.

You can see that tile is waiting on me and that will be NEXT!  Subway tiling around the tub has begun.

  1. Rhoda, stop talking about Hobby Lobby. We don’t have one and it makes me jealous. Thank you.

  4. Why don’t I have a Hobby Lobby?! Hrmph.
    🙂

  5. I’ve never commented on a post before but I just had to on this one! I was in Hobby Lobby this weekend looking at the knobs. I was thinking of all the wonderful things you can do with them. So many different kinds. A good friend of mine purchased the large wrought iron knobs and hung a window treatment on them in her breakfast room. I’m going to email you a pic of it. Sooo pretty and inexpensive!

  6. Gorgeous! I don’t think they could be any more perfect! Great find!

  7. Those look perfect with your rug! I love the knobs at Hobby Lobby. I think I like them more than the ones at Anthropologie (and those are cute too).

    Stay warm!

  8. I guess it’s a good thing that there is not a Hobby Lobby near me….cause’ that’s where I’d be heading today!! Hugs, Ingrid

  9. Well, I’ll DECLARE!
Ilearn something everytime I come over to your place….. I must be the last person to find out HL has these knobs…. and we have three of these stores near me…. Just haven’t visited the right dept. but that will be fixed today!
On the funny side(?) we were going to save our brass shower enclosure, but the contractor put it in the garage, and it shattered when the temp dropped to below freezing…. so we have an “open shower’ and I love not having to clean the glass! ( It’s temporary til… next step gets addressed.).
can’t wait to see what the tub surround looks like- and I LOVE the fabric…. you go , girl!

  10. I had no idea that Hobby Lobby carries knobs! Thanks for the heads up, Rhoda. I love the way your bathroom has come together.

  11. I don’t know if John Wieland builds in Birmingham, but I would swear this looks like our master bath in a John Wieland neighborhood in Woodstock, GA! Same mix of brass and silver….and I have sooo wanted to remodel. Your post has inspired me to spruce it up and keep living with it. After all, very few people actually see our master bath. By the way, ours is blue also, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the color blue…especially in a bath!

  12. can’t wait to see how it turns out, love what you showed me back in December.

    Hugs!

  13. I didn’t have a clue that hobby Lobby carries knobs! I can’t wait to look at their selection! I love the ones you chose to use in your bathroom, they go with your rug perfectly. Well done!

  14. We don’t have Hobby Lobby here in California…I’ve noticed that they have opened stores in Arizona near my mom so maybe sometime soon. I sure hope so. I enjoy seeing all the great things you gals find there.

P.S. Knobs look great and match the rug nicely!!

  15. Carrie Mizell says

I just discovered the knobs at Hobby Lobby last week and I am beside myself!!! Your bathroom knobs look great.

  16. Didn’t know about the knobs at Hobby Lobby- will check it out!

  17. Quote: We’ll keep the brass surround.

Just FYI but if you want to change out the shiny brass with a minimum cost and modicum effort – check out the new Rustoleum (?) line of spray finishes in bronzes, irons, etc.

I was able to salvage a shiny brass chandelier for the cost of a can and some begging for DH to take it down and out so I could spray it.

In your case it would require some careful masking but I could see that brass refinished in something to match your light fixture, canisters, or even a black.

    HTH!
