Pretty Knobs

Picture 025

These cruddy knobs have been in our bathroom about 4 years now and I kept staring at them, knowing they needed to go.  Just wasn’t sure which direction I wanted to go with them.  See, when we first moved in here, I tried to go with silver tones in here and after trying these knobs in silver first, decided ehhhhh, didn’t like that color. It just went dead in here, in spite of the blue walls which usually look good with silver.

And so, as most good DIY divas do, I painted the knobs.  Only you can see that they didn’t last too long and the bronze started rubbing off. That’s the problem with painting things that get touched a lot.  It usually doesn’t last.

Picture 088

Did you know about the knobs from Hobby Lobby? They now carry a TON of beautiful and decorative knobs for bathroom, dressers, kitchens, that cute piece of furniture you just finished painting.  They are very Anthropologie-like knobs.

Picture 090

There are so many colors and styles to choose from.   Priced from around $2.99 to $5.99 each, they put them on sale at 1/2 off about once a month, which of course I waited for.

Picture 092

LOVE these monogram black and white ones.  Where could you use one of these?

Picture 091

Ador-ABLE!

Picture 093

Fleur de lis are oh, so chic.

Picture 094

And there are several vintage style glass ones to choose from, from small to large. This is just a fraction of what they carry.

Picture 004
So, I hunted down the blues and found THESE for our master bath.  They are perfect!

Picture 005

See how cute they are with the rug?

Picture 006

Love, love them.  I found these rugs at Ballard Designs, by the way.  It was hard to find these colors 3 or 4 years ago, but I do believe that blue is making a comeback.

Picture 022

I’ll tell you a little bit of my thinking in this room.  We have this brass shower surround, which I guarantee you is not going anywhere.  As much as I’d love to have a seamless glass shower surround, there is nothing wrong with this one, so I concentrate on things that need changing the most.   I choose my battles wisely, and this ain’t it .  I can live with this brass.  I mentioned that I almost went silver in here with the hardware, but with the warm brass, it just made more sense to go with antique gold in here.

Just because someone will ask, the wall color here is Kilz Magellan, from Walmart.

Picture 014

And we have a mix of brass and chrome on the faucets, tub, shower and sinks.  I’m pretty sure those aren’t going anywhere either.  So, this is a lesson in learning to live with what you have.

Picture 008

We’ll keep the brass surround.

Picture 009

I painted my towel holders and hooks in an antique gold color when we first moved in.

Picture 012

Painted this glass shelf and the tops of those glass jars, all antique gold.  And with the bamboo blinds and the rugs, it all works well together, I think.

Picture 023

I replaced the light fixtures with these pretty antiquey bronzey gold ones.  The ones that were in the house were really ugly, shiny brass.  This gold I really like.   So, instead of fighting with the gold and brass in here, I embraced it.  And I like the way it’s all come together.

Picture 019

I found this pretty striped fabric last summer for $3 a yard and have BIG plans to sew some pretty toppers for my bamboo blinds in here.  Don’t have it completely figured out, but it will probably be very simple, maybe stapled on a board above the window.  Now that I have a sewing machine, I can do this.   And even though the stripe is more yellowy than the rug, I think it will all be pretty together, once they are hung up.  I also have plans to add some beadboard wallpaper in the water closet with chair rail.

Picture 021

So, you can see I’m still tweaking in the master bath.  A little bit of progress at a time and it will be finished.  Those knobs just got things rolling once again and I’ll tackle the rest soon.

You can see that tile is waiting on me and that will be NEXT!  Subway tiling around the tub has begun.

They look great, Rhoda. I bought the blue and white delft looking knobs, at Hobby Lobby, for the guest room sliding closet doors. Shiny brass knobs were there before. I think I need to make another trip to Hobby Lobby, one of these days.

Those knobs are PERFECT for your bathroom! Just one more thing for me to be jealous of…no Hobby Lobby here, and I miss it terribly. Looking forward to all the rest of your tweaking in this room.

I like your message that we CAN learn to live with what we have. In this economy and our desire to save our planet, I think this is a very important message indeed. I love the blue in your bathroom. I am happy to hear that blue is making a comeback. ‘Love your blog Rhoda!

    Hi Rhoda,
Love your new knobs & how they match so well with your rug. I wish we had a Hobby Lobby here in Canada because I would be out buying some of those great monogrammed knobs. I look forward to the subway tile reveal. TFS! Sheila

Those knobs look great in your bathroom! I bought glass knobs at Hobby Lobby for a nightstand I found at a flea market last fall. Loved the result! Wouldn’t the monogrammed knobs look fab on a foyer table? Or in a kid’s room? Love the blog

Looks great! I just had a little Hobby Lobby shopping spree on Friday. Our store is 40 miles away so it’s quite the excursion. I bought some of the antique glass knobs for our hideous entertainment center. I really want to paint it but am so nervous…what if I don’t like it?! These knobs are like putting lipstick on a pig but I’ll see how it goes for now. I love your projects!

    Pretty, pretty knobs!

THANK YOU for using your platform to proclaim that you can live with brass. It may not be newest thing, but it’s not necessarily anathema. There really may be bigger fish to fry. 🙂

You are so right, those knobs are PERFECT! And, keep that brass and spend your money on something else. I recently got an all-glass door and it cost me $700 from the low bidder!! Surely brass will come back “in” soon since everything seems to run on a cycle! I enjoy your blog and I can’t wait to see the finished project to see what other surprises you have in your pocket!

I can see that everything is working very well together in your bathroom. It looks wonderful, I think. I adore those knobs, why oh why don’t we have a Hobby Lobby? We really NEED it. Sometimes we have to pick our battles, my bathroom is one that I am not willing to fight yet. I say the Serenity Prayer every time I go in there.;o) Hugs, Cindy S.
