When we were driving down to New Orleans, I was looking through the new Southern Living magazine and lo and behold it was full of pound cake recipes. What Southern girl worth her salt doesn’t LOVE pound cake?!
I do, I do!
We grew up on rich, buttery pound cake. I was just over in Atlanta again with my family and look what I spied as soon as I came in the door to my parent’s house.Anything under a silver dome this pretty and vintage has to be delectable, huh? Yep, it is! As good as it looks. The glaze is very lemony and it’s a delish cake. Right out of Southern Living. She says she is going to try some of the others too. I told her when I move back in with them that I just can’t be eating cake ALL the time. She promised some low-fat desserts too.OK, I can live with that. 🙂
Just in case you’d like to try this one, here’s the recipe right out of Southern Living:
Lemon-Coconut Pound Cake Loaf
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 1/3 cups granulated sugar
3 large eggs
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. baking soda
1/2 cup sour cream
2 tsp. lemon zest
1 cup sweetened flake coconut, divided
Lemon Glaze
Whisk together 2 cups powdered sugar, 2 Tbsp. milk, and 2 tsp. fresh lemon juice, adding an additional 1 Tbsp. milk, 1 tsp. at a time for desired consistency.
- Preheat oven to 325*. Beat butter at medium speed with a heavy-duty electric stand mixer until creamy. Gradually add sugar, beating until light & fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until just blended after each addition.
- Stir together flour, salt, and baking soda. Add to butter mixture alternately with sour cream, beginning & ending with flour mixture. Beat at low speed just until blended after each addition. Stir in lemon zest & 1/2 cup coconut. Pour batter into a greased & floured 9×5 inch loaf pan.
- Bake at 325* for 1 hour and 5 minutes to 1 hour and 10 minutes or until a long wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack 10 to 15 minutes; remove from pan to wire rack & cool completely (about 1 hour).
- Spoon Lemon Glaze over cake & sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup coconut.
It’s a good one, so I hope you’ll try it too. Loved that lemon glaze!

Stop torturing us! It looks delicious. It is interesting reading the comments. My grandmother had that cake cover too and she makes a mean coconut cake with a 7 minute icing….makes me want to go visit her. She is 90 and my mom said she just made a cake a few weeks ago. I love your house particularly the arrangement of plates on the wall and the arrangement with the birdhouse, picture frame, gallery wall with fleur de lis and bunny heads. It is so beautiful.

Rhoda,
One of my favorite dessert is lemon pound cake. When I was pregnant with my son, my old neighbor would bring me cakes like this and I simply cannot find any recipe like that one. I still crave it!
I’ll try this one later one. I’ll bake it with my kids after I get my son from school. 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing it!
Have a Blessed day!

I love SL! I live in OK, and while supposedly we’re still “South”, you couldn’t tell it from all of the magazines!
My go-to pound cake for Christmas gift giving is SL’s Cream Cheese Pound Cake (I think they put in the 1996 annual book? Might have been 99). That cake has people calling me and saying “SEND ME THE CAKE THIS YEAR”. Yes, I baked/mailed cakes for years (being military, it was cheaper to do it that way than to hand deliver to friends/family).
I will have to get the latest issue, even though my DH doesn’t care for pound cake (I do. He’ll have to deal with it somehow, lol).

My Great-Grandmother had a cake dome that looked just like that. She passed away in her early 80’s about 20 years ago and I didnt even remember it until I saw the picture of your Mom’s dome! Great memories. 🙂

Thanks. I’m sure I gained 5 lbs just looking at the picture!! There is nothing better than pound cake. Well, maybe, pound cake with coffee, served on the veranda, overlooking the gulf……
I see pound cake in my near future; the rest, still daydreaming…

Rhoda, I just had to comment on the covered cake plate with the Lemon Pound Cake. I have my grandmother’s covered cake plate and it looks just like your mothers.

I think I may have found heaven from the oven. If this were any more perfect, it would include cheesecake in there somewhere! I can’t wait to try this! I think it is great that things like this are passed down. I grew up here in the States, and most of my family is in Peru so things like this cake dome are few and far between for me. Thanks for sharing!
