More Porch Updates

I’m up in High Point, NC this weekend, coming back on Tuesday and I will be sharing all the highlights from this fun trip to the furniture market.

Dad has been working on the porch, getting the beadboard installed around the perimeter inside the porch. One recent day, I helped him rip down all the beadboard pieces to fit in there and then he took a day and got them cut just right to fit and nailed them in place. He had to cut around the new electrical outlets that got installed, so that was a little bit of a pain, but he made big progress in just a couple of days.

cutting beadboard

We ripped down whole sheets into the right height for the bottom half of the screened porch.

Feeding the pieces through his table saw, we got them all cut and stacked.

one wall done

Then he was ready to start nailing and cutting out the holes for the electrical outlets.  It’s starting to look like a porch now.  We still have a long ways to go, but we’re getting there. Can you see all that yellow pollen out there?  It’s all over the place and I can’t wait til it stops dropping.  We hate that this time of year, but it’s a big part of Spring in the South.

Nailing up the corner and starting the next row.

I made him stop and pose for me. I told him his fans want to see him in action.

He’s a good, good man, my daddy.

And he’s almost finished with this corner, then there will be one more wall to do.  Just wanted to share this bit of progress with you.

I’m traveling up a storm lately and will be headed to a small blog conference down in Jekyl Island next week, called the Southern Coterie Summit.  I’m looking forward to this design group of folks and getting to experience the coast of Georgia again.  I’ll be sharing all of my adventures on the blog, you know it!  I love what I do!

Aww, you do have such a sweet Daddy! Everything is looking great. And I’m with you on the pollen…it has covered everything on my screened porch. I have to wait it out every year and then do a complete scrub down out there. But I’ll take the pollen with the warmer weather any day! 😉

The biggest blessing is having parents love you sooo much to help you with your house. I would say this is the house that love built.

My Father was a carpenter by trade; only had a 3rd. grade education but he was one smart man. He knew something about everything! I remember working along side of him when he built our last house about 1956. That’s where I learned how to shingle a roof and hammer a nail..You didn’t dare use his hammer though; even if you thought you put back exactly as and where he had laid it, Daddy could always tell. Unfortunately, he had a quick temper and you’d know by his actions and curse words that he was not happy with you.
Seems like you have a wonderful relationship with your Dad. Are you an only child? Enjoy both parents while you can.
What type of flooring will you put in the screened porch? What happens when it rains in on that bead board? Won’t it warp?

Hi, Betty, the floor is deck flooring (wood), so it will be painted. All the beadboard will be painted out in exterior paint, so should be fine with a little water coming in. I’m not an only child, I have one sister 2 years older than me.

Yay for Dad’s fans! You know we love to see him in action! He is something else and is so immensely proud of you and this house. So sweet.
The beadboard is really finishing it off — looking great! Happy travels, Rhoda!

Yes, your Daddy is a GOOD man – hope he knows how many fans he has !

It’s heartwarming to see how much time you spend with your Mom and Daddy – time goes so quickly, and sometimes we don’t realize how much we love and appreciate our Moms and Dads until they’re not around any more – So happy to see that you are loving and appreciating them every day……
