Am I the only one who still has her Barbie doll? I’ll tell ya, I loved playing with my Barbie dolls growing up. I was a total tomboy & spent most of my time outside, doing something fun & slightly dangerous, but when it came time to play with dolls…it was my Barbie that I loved. Forget the babydolls…give me Barbie! I got her for Christmas one year when I was probably 8 or 9 and I made a special point to keep her. I have nothing else from childhood, but Barbie. My sister loved the babydolls, but they were never my favorite. We even had a Barbie college that we got one year & that was pretty neat too. My mom sewed all our clothes for us when we were growing up, so of course, Barbie got new clothes too. See all those tiny little outfits…mom made them all. We didn’t get store-bought clothes (way too expensive!), not when Mom had all these scraps of fabric lying around. Can you imagine the patience it took to make these little outfits…lots more than I would have, that’s for sure! These are all I have left…the bridal gown, the little blue dress with the net overlay (how snazzy is that?!), and of course, the business-girl’s gray flannel for work, as well as the striped cotton number for summer. And, there’s even a red velvet coat for glamorous Barbie.
Barbie’s pretty blue case. And remember the red maillot she wore? Mom made some black corduroy pants & a yellow robe.
Barbie…the dreams little girls are made of!

Rhoda, That’s cool that you still have your Barbie! I had the original Barbie with the black and white swimsuit and another one with 3 wigs. I cut all the hair off my original one so she could wear the wigs too.

Rhoda, welcome back! No I don’t have my Barbie anymore. It’s wonderful that you do! Did your mom make you & Barbie matching dresses? THAT would have been so cute. I can’t imagine the patience it took to make those little, tiny outfits! I barely have the patience to try make a big ol’ pillow!

There is another delete from me, Rhoda…I have had my head in Paula’s book all day and can’t think of anything else!!
What I wanted to say was…I didn’t have Barbie…born too early! My girls had Barbies and I sewed their outfits, also. I got to enjoy Barbie through my daughters!

Oh Rhoda, I loved this post! Can you believe that I was born the year of Barbie’s debut and I never had a REAL Barbie? I had Francie, Casey and my beloved Skipper, but no Barbie! My best friend had your case.. so fun to see that again! I’m happy that you still have your special Barbie! Wasn’t it just yesterday that we were playing dolls? 😉
xo,

Rhoda, I loved seeing your Barbie and accessories! I had that case in pink. I so wish I still had my collection (I’m sure they were sold at a garage sale long ago). I really enjoyed my Barbies, and my Krissy doll, too (with the hair that grew).
God thought I should have boys…but he did give me a girly-girl niece who will play Barbies all day with me!
Thanks for sharing those memories…

Sad story. I got my older cousins Barbies and all their clothes, etc. and so they would be worth a lot of $…had I not traded their HEADS to other children with dime store dolls…as well as their clothes.
My mother also sewed my Barbie clothes and there was a furrier in town where Mama would get tiny scraps of mink and make little stoles and coats for my doll. I liked Skipper the best because she was flat chested and didn’t have that womanly arched foot!

Rhoda, your 3 columns look great! You did a wonderful job! I’m sure that I will be asking you for help on a few things soon…there are some things that I just haven’t mastered!
Your blog looks so pretty!

Rhoda,
Great to hear from you and glad you had a nice Easter….
I go back, way back, to dolls. I had a (my daughter collects dolls so she has my dolls now) Bonnie Braids doll. She was Dick Tracy’s baby.
Amy, my daughter, has her Barbie. We had her a wedding dress made from lace scraps from my wedding dress. Brings back lots of memories…..

That is so neat that you still have her. What special memories. My sister and I were talking the other day about us not remembering ever playing with barbie dolls. I guess since we had each other and we were almost twins we just played with each other.
Naturegirl says
No this little girl never had a Barbie..knew of her though! Where are your Barbies feet!
I did make up for not having one by making sure my own daughter grew up with one..however it went during a yard sale. :)NG

How wonderful. I just love those pictures and her outfits are darlin’. I wish I still had my Barbie’s but they went quite a long time ago. I had the case too similar to yours. Thanks for letting me run down memory lane.

I didn’t have Barbie – too old, and of course I was in England as a child so played and dressed small English dollies! I used to knit and sew for them – my Mum was a dressmaker so there was always plenty of extra fabric lying around.
I’m still in touch with my friend Carol who lived next door – we always talk about the long hours we spent “playing dolls”. Our houses were like a duplex and our bedrooms shared a wall – we knocked on it at night in a secret code! Oh my, your mention of dolls has brought all these memories back – such fun, thanks.
Mary.
P.S. Rhoda – the Italian Easter cake was good – similar to the Panettone sold at Christmas, but dotted inside with dark chocolate cream instead of raisins and dried peels, with a crisp chocolate icing on top.

Oh, how I loved my Barbies! I don’t have the original one, but have quite a few left (some of them in better shape than others). My mom sewed some of the clothes for mine too. I had Skipper, Tutti, Midge, and Ken….. and some “groovy” outfits!!
Fun memories!!

What a walk down memory lane, I loved my Barbie doll, I also had Midge (Barbie’s best friend) and my sister had Ken. My case was red. I had so many of her outfits, my favorite was the black gown that came with a microphone, my Grandmother made me quite a few outfits too. I had her tucked away or so I thought…when somehow she disappeared…no one remembers what happened to my Barbie. ***I would also to like to note, I had younger brothers and she survived them…lol The thing that bothers me most is my own little girl never got to meet my Barbie doll 🙁
I also had Chatty Cathy does anyone remember her ???
Thanks for the walk down memory lane !!!
Kathy 🙂

Good for you for saving your stuff! My daughter played with mine and had a blast.
I loved Barbies. And I loved building giant-size houses for them. Fun day. And fun post!

Yes! I still have my Barbie. I have kept her all these years. I’ll have to make a pic to show you. And I have the case, too. My Grandmother was the seamstress who made little clothes for me. I still have most of them. All my boys would love for me to get them down for them to see. I have the Ken doll, too. But his hair is mostly rubbed off. Great memory. Thanks!
