Am I the only one who still has her Barbie doll? I’ll tell ya, I loved playing with my Barbie dolls growing up. I was a total tomboy & spent most of my time outside, doing something fun & slightly dangerous, but when it came time to play with dolls…it was my Barbie that I loved. Forget the babydolls…give me Barbie! I got her for Christmas one year when I was probably 8 or 9 and I made a special point to keep her. I have nothing else from childhood, but Barbie. My sister loved the babydolls, but they were never my favorite. We even had a Barbie college that we got one year & that was pretty neat too. My mom sewed all our clothes for us when we were growing up, so of course, Barbie got new clothes too. See all those tiny little outfits…mom made them all. We didn’t get store-bought clothes (way too expensive!), not when Mom had all these scraps of fabric lying around. Can you imagine the patience it took to make these little outfits…lots more than I would have, that’s for sure! These are all I have left…the bridal gown, the little blue dress with the net overlay (how snazzy is that?!), and of course, the business-girl’s gray flannel for work, as well as the striped cotton number for summer. And, there’s even a red velvet coat for glamorous Barbie.
Barbie’s pretty blue case. And remember the red maillot she wore? Mom made some black corduroy pants & a yellow robe.
Barbie…the dreams little girls are made of!

I had only one Barbie and never played with her. Like your sister I preferred the babydolls. You asked where we’ve relocated to. We are in TN, just moved from Nashville. The mountains in my photo are part of the Blue Ridge. The Appalachian trail runs right by a picnic area not to far from us. We are in a rather congested area, but are high enough that we have one of the best views around. We love it here. xoxo

I still have my REVLON DOLL and Iam 59 years old. For a long time, when I was little ,I had only the dress that she came with. My mother couldn’t afford new doll clothes. So my grandmother made a wedding dress and veil out of one of her good slips and also a dress out of some left over material. I was sooooo proud of my dolls wardrobe and still am today. The only thing is somewhere along the line she lost her shoes.

OH, she looks just like mine — but I don’t have her any more. I still have Skipper, and Pepper, and Midge, though. Do you have any of Barbie’s friends? After I ‘grew up’ I went through another Barbie stage and collected lots of them (they are in storage now). What fun to comb their hair and dress them up! I still have the Barbie furniture my daddy made for me when I was in 2nd grade. . .and some of the clothing my mom sewed for my Barbies. Great memories!

What fun to share all these great Barbie memories with all of you…I can see this struck a chord. Little girls never grow up completely, do we? Thanks ya’ll for stopping by & making my day! Looks like only Tonya still has her Barbie too. I never had Ken or any of her friends..we were lucky to just have Barbie! A lot of my friends had the others though, so I did get to play with them.

Rhoda, how nice that you still have yours. I wish I did~it was one of the originals. When I was a young girl my cousins, whose father was in the military, came back from Germany with this oo-la-la doll. LOL Her name was Lilli. I wanted one so badly. It wasn’t long after that when Mattel bought Lilli and reintroduced her as Barbie with some modifications. The history of Lilli is here. Apparently she was sold in smoke shops as a joke for men. Oh my! Thanks for the memories!

Thanks for the memories Rhoda!
I love my Barbie dolls! Still do!
I got my first Barbie in 1964 followed by Midge and Ken and Twiggy and Skipper and then I was the very first to get the 12 inch GI Joe doll with posable arms and legs. I mean come on! Who needs the stiff, uptight Ken when Barbie can have the handsome, buff and posable GI Joe! And mine happened to be one of the first off the press, and had a scar on his face… so I guess it’s worth A LOT more! They eventually stopped making them with the scar… probably scared the kids!
Great post Rhoda!

I have that Barbie! And all her clothes, and case. Even a Barbie House. Somehow I can’t get rid of it all. She (and her friends) were such a big part of my life. I bought my first Barbie for $3.00 when I moved here from Europe. What a thrill!!
Hoping for grandchildren who might want to play with me again. If not, I may have to sneek her out once in awhile so she can try on all her clothes again.

Oh wow! If you didn’t just bring back a flood of memories for me!! How I wish I still had my first Barbie, her case and the loads of accessories that amassed over the years. While I kept alot of things from my childhood and passed them on to my girls…this is the one thing I regret that wasn’t kept. Thanks for sharing your Barbie with the rest of us who love her so!!

Rhoda,
You mentioned Ellaville. Isn’t it near Butler, Reynolds, in that area? We lived in Thomaston and I think we went through Ellaville several times going to Albany- Americus……..
