Am I the only one who still has her Barbie doll? I’ll tell ya, I loved playing with my Barbie dolls growing up. I was a total tomboy & spent most of my time outside, doing something fun & slightly dangerous, but when it came time to play with dolls…it was my Barbie that I loved. Forget the babydolls…give me Barbie! I got her for Christmas one year when I was probably 8 or 9 and I made a special point to keep her. I have nothing else from childhood, but Barbie. My sister loved the babydolls, but they were never my favorite. We even had a Barbie college that we got one year & that was pretty neat too. My mom sewed all our clothes for us when we were growing up, so of course, Barbie got new clothes too. See all those tiny little outfits…mom made them all. We didn’t get store-bought clothes (way too expensive!), not when Mom had all these scraps of fabric lying around. Can you imagine the patience it took to make these little outfits…lots more than I would have, that’s for sure! These are all I have left…the bridal gown, the little blue dress with the net overlay (how snazzy is that?!), and of course, the business-girl’s gray flannel for work, as well as the striped cotton number for summer. And, there’s even a red velvet coat for glamorous Barbie.
Barbie’s pretty blue case. And remember the red maillot she wore? Mom made some black corduroy pants & a yellow robe.
Barbie…the dreams little girls are made of!

I was much the same Rhoda. I didn’t take to baby dolls but I loved Barbie. My grandma would make clothes she was a seamstress and my father’s dry cleaners. Mom knew how to sew too but I don’t think she made me anything. My bubblehead Barbie was black haired one and a black shiny case! It’s fun to go back in time!

Rhoda, I’m 67 & got a Barbie From my “fancy” aunt for Christmas the first year she came out. Mine has ablack ponytail & poodle bangs! Another aunt made all kinds of clothes. I remember the wedding dress at the store cost $5!!!
