Sometimes it’s those little things in life that are the most important and helping my mom plant her annual flowers last week was one of those little things. She’s been having some back issues and asked me to come over and help her plant and so, of course I did. We went to Burger’s Market, a staple farmer’s market/plant center here in Marietta that has been around for 40 years, I saw on their sign. I’ve been buying plants and produce from them for a long time too.
They are an old fashioned farmers market with lots of good stuff and have been serving our area for a long time.
Lots of healthy plants ready to take home and plant.
My dad buys a lot of his vegetable plants here every spring too for his garden. Mom was on a mission to find her annual plants and she knows just what she wants.
They have lots of pretty hanging baskets. Love these petunias.
Hibiscus are a fave of mine too.
Mom checking out her tried and true annuals.
Dragon Wing begonias are the ones she likes to plant in the shade.
So this is what she brought home and it didn’t take us long to plant them. She loves to dig in the dirt and has a very green thumb.
She always plants zinnias around her mailbox.
So we got the bed cleaned out and planted 6 marigolds in there and she added mulch back to it. She will faithfully water this bed and keep them alive.
The begonias ended up in the shade by the house.
In the backyard, she’s got a bed of perennials and she adds a few annuals in there. This lily was blooming so pretty.
Knockout roses are doing well too.
Mom can still swing a mattock even at 86 and hardly slows down. I helped her as much as I could though and the ground is soft so it didn’t take much digging. This is part of life she enjoys, taking care of flowers.
They have some gorgeous oakleaf hydrangeas in the backyard. I love these too.
Dad’s garden is doing well and will no doubt bring in plenty of veggies this year. We count the days until around July 4th when the home grown tomatoes start rolling in.
Muscadine vines are thick and lush.
And I had to show dad in his favorite spot in the backyard, his swing. He spends a LOT of time in this swing every summer, his fave napping spot. I told him his fans would want to see how he’s doing, so this is for you!
Gardening and digging in the dirt is good for the soul, don’t you agree? It always makes me happy too.
The pictures of your mom shopping for plants is so great. I wish I would have started a blog earlier so I could have included my wonderful mom. She and my dad had green thumbs. Their plants were incredible. I miss them so much — if there is anything I would advise it would be to treasure your parents and ask many questions — about their childhood, about relatives. My time is lost — wish I had it back.
I can’t get over how active your parents are!
Your mom & dad are precious. I know you know that, but from someone who has lost both their mom & dad, hug yours a little harder & a little longer every chance you get. Give your parents a hug & kiss from me. Loved your post!
Just loved the pictures of your mom shopping for her flowers and all the beautiful annuals and perennials around their yard. Loved seeing your dad in his favorite swing too. Just love your blog….it’s always such a pleasure to read….and you always have GREAT pictures! Thanks so much! This is what we did this past weekend too ….. planted flowers with daughter and granddaughter!!!
Your parents are precious, and you are so very blessed that both of them are still around for you to enjoy. Although my parents worked in the city, we lived on the family farm and I have such wonderful memories of my grandmother’s vegetable garden in which she always planted a row of zinnias or marigolds. Isn’t life good!
Love your posts on your Mom and Dad! I miss mine so much and get such joy reading about yours! And it’s obvious that you cherish every moment with them! Many blessings to you and your patents!
Oops! Darn spellcheck! *parents
It was so refreshing to read one of my many blogs today that was not about decorating or painting or what not. I loved reading about your Mothers trip to the garden store and seeing what she picked out and likes to plant. I have my favorites too! My Mother passed away 6 months ago but before she got sick we went every spring and loaded up with our favorites. Mama loved her flowers and she said working in her garden was her therapy. Your Mother and Father are such an inspiration to me and they show what hard work can accomplish. They just keep going and going and giving and giving! Please let them know how much we enjoy reading about them!
I enjoyed coming along on you and your mom’s trip to the garden store. I have seen those begonias in pots and always thought they were beautiful. I will be going out to find some to plant around my house. I agree with you and your parents – digging in the dirt and nurturing plants IS good for the soul!
Rhoda, seeing your parents is good for MY soul! They are truly treasures. My mother is 91 and she lives in our backyard. I helped her pot up some flowers for her little front porch. Her vision is not good and I will always remember her hands pushing the flowers into the potting soil this year. Yes, digging in the dirt is good for a lot of things!
love to see your mom and dad… 🙂 i so wish i had that relationship with my parents that you have with yours. 🙂 please tell them the gardens and beds look beautiful!!!!
Your post and pics of your lovely parents brought tears to my eyes. My parents were avid gardeners and have been gone 4 years. We lost my beloved mother-in-law 3 years ago and she was also an amazing gardener. I miss them so much in spring and summer when I’m picking out plants, remembering our trips to greenhouses and garden centers. We would also be calling each other to see what was in bloom and how the tomatoes and green beans were coming along. At the same time I somehow feel close to them as I weed, plant and pass plants on to my own daughters.
Aww Rhoda – Such a sweet story. I loved looking at their flower beds and gardens – reminds me so much of my parents. I lost my dad 12 years ago and lost my mom 3 weeks ago. She was 92.
You are so blessed to still have your parents with you. Please tell them that their gardens are beautiful and give them hugs for me. 🙂
Thanks so much for sharing.

So happy that you get to spend all this wonderful time with both your parents. I am also very lucky to be able to spend time with my parents and every moment is precious. God Bless them all.
Your sweet mama and daddy remind me of my grandparents.
I’m counting down the days until August when I get to go to my daddy’s farm and pick muscadines. You’d think I’d be sick of them after 44 years, but nope, still my favorite!
