Sometimes it’s those little things in life that are the most important and helping my mom plant her annual flowers last week was one of those little things. She’s been having some back issues and asked me to come over and help her plant and so, of course I did. We went to Burger’s Market, a staple farmer’s market/plant center here in Marietta that has been around for 40 years, I saw on their sign. I’ve been buying plants and produce from them for a long time too.
They are an old fashioned farmers market with lots of good stuff and have been serving our area for a long time.
Lots of healthy plants ready to take home and plant.
My dad buys a lot of his vegetable plants here every spring too for his garden. Mom was on a mission to find her annual plants and she knows just what she wants.
They have lots of pretty hanging baskets. Love these petunias.
Hibiscus are a fave of mine too.
Mom checking out her tried and true annuals.
Dragon Wing begonias are the ones she likes to plant in the shade.
So this is what she brought home and it didn’t take us long to plant them. She loves to dig in the dirt and has a very green thumb.
She always plants zinnias around her mailbox.
So we got the bed cleaned out and planted 6 marigolds in there and she added mulch back to it. She will faithfully water this bed and keep them alive.
The begonias ended up in the shade by the house.
In the backyard, she’s got a bed of perennials and she adds a few annuals in there. This lily was blooming so pretty.
Knockout roses are doing well too.
Mom can still swing a mattock even at 86 and hardly slows down. I helped her as much as I could though and the ground is soft so it didn’t take much digging. This is part of life she enjoys, taking care of flowers.
They have some gorgeous oakleaf hydrangeas in the backyard. I love these too.
Dad’s garden is doing well and will no doubt bring in plenty of veggies this year. We count the days until around July 4th when the home grown tomatoes start rolling in.
Muscadine vines are thick and lush.
And I had to show dad in his favorite spot in the backyard, his swing. He spends a LOT of time in this swing every summer, his fave napping spot. I told him his fans would want to see how he’s doing, so this is for you!
Gardening and digging in the dirt is good for the soul, don’t you agree? It always makes me happy too.
Enjoyed this post, so much, Rhoda. Always love seeing your folks.
We spent time with Jim’s Aunt Ruth last week. She continues to amaze us, at 90. Loves her gardens and so do we. She still works with her flowers. When we arrived at her home, she wasn’t there. I knew where she was, when I found a hanging basket 1/2 planted. Sure enough, we found her at the flower tent down the road. She sent home some of her prized iris roots with us.:-)
Wow their yard is very pretty and how awesome your parents are so physical at their age seeing your mom with that big tool at her age very cool.

Rhoda, it is always so nice to see your parents enjoying their time in the gardens. How sweet that they are still able to do the things that they enjoy!
What a lovely post; I enjoy reading about your parents and family. By the way, your posts just started coming through by email again.
I just love these posts that involve your family. It’s a blessing to get to see the beautiful new baby and your wonderful parents, too. Your dad’s garden is AMAZING! Wow! No wonder they’re in such good shape! Hope all of you had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. 🙂
Love this post and seeing your Mama and Daddy!!! Yes gardening is good for the soul!!!
Give your Mom and Dad a hug from their fans!! Love seeing pictures of them and their gardens. You are a blessed daughter!
My Daddy’s garden looks very similar! Such a talent to be able to garden and grow your own veggies!
My mom, 79 fills the front porch railing with flower boxes of petunias! This year fushia and white stripes with plain fushia petunias tumbling with them! also hanging pots full…geraniums and her Christmas cactus on the porch…the roses are gorgeous along with the mock orange in full bloom right now…it is a floral extravaganza….hold these times precious…there is the fountain of youth in tending and watching things grow!
Brightened my morning to read about your cute mom & dad. You’re so blessed to have them. Enjoy all that fun stuff like digging around with your mom :0)
Your parents still are amazing! They can outwork anyone I know. I love your mom’s flowers and it just wouldn’t be right not to see your Dad’s garden! Thanks for sharing your precious parents again! They’re quite and inspiration!
How wonderful to see your parents so mobile at their age. My jaw dropped when I saw your Dad’s garden!! It is huge!! I am amazed he can take care of that large a plot of land. How wonderful you still have them in your life. Take plenty of pictures and enjoy every drop of time you have with them. How special you still get to share your life with them. I am in my 50’s and my mom and dad passed within the last 5 years. While I am grateful they lived a long life it still was not enough. Miss them every day. I get a lot of joy when I see someone else enjoying their parents!!!
I love all of the postings about you mom & dad! You are so truly blessed to have your parents.
I love your blog. Thank you so much for sharing!
Bless their hearts! After all she has done for you, I’m sure it was a pleasure to return the favor. How blessed they are to still have each other, and how blessed you are to have them. She is 20 years my senior, and I don’t think I could work like her. Thanks for posting.
What a joyful post, Rhoda!!! Loved seeing you and your Mom at the farmer’s market picking out just the right annuals for her flower beds. Also loved the picture of your precious Dad!! They are such an inspiration and bring back such wonderful memories of my Mom & Dad!!! You are truly blessed to be able to spend so much time with them…… hugs to all of you!! 🙂
I’m a fan of both your parents!
Hey Rhoda! Love this post! My Momma will be 87 in July and just found out she has breast cancer. We are thankful it’s not the aggressive kind. She will have surgery in a few weeks. I know from following your blog that you love your Momma and Daddy just as much as I do. I’ve learned so much from mine and I’m grateful to still have both of them. Have a great day!
Blessings, Cindy
OH MY GOODNESS – I do love your Mom and Daddy and you are right to say that we are their fans ! That is for sure. I agree with all the comments above – it is so wonderful to see that you are able to see your parents regularly and appreciate every moment with them. They are amazing people and I have so much respect for them ! Did your Daddy plant that veggie garden ?!
We sometimes don’t really appreciate our parents until we no longer have them – but I don’t think that is the case with you – you seem to appreciate and love them very much……God Bless them !
Yes, Patricia, my dad has been planting a garden like that for as long as I’ve been alive.
Precious! You’re so fortunate to still have both parents……..makes me teary as I’d love to have mine back.
Add me to the list of fans of your folks. You are so blessed to have them.
