Continuing the conversation once more on Bed and Bath ideas, by pondering more on the subject. I think it was half and half on who had TV’s in their bedroom. Many of you were totally against the idea and I can understand that too.
So, let’s talk about ways to make your bedroom a sanctuary. What do you do specifically to give your bedroom the feel of a haven and a place you enjoy hanging out in?
Here are a few ideas I have for making your bedroom a lovely place to relax and retreat:
- Have a cozy reading chair with a lamp nearby for curling up with a good book. I think every bedroom should have a little corner for a chair and ottoman, if there’s room. Luckily we have just enough room in our bedroom for a cozy chair.
- Fresh flowers would be nice too, if you have a spot to display them. Not so much if anyone has allergies, but think how pretty they would be to enjoy for a few days.
- Our room is right next to the kitchen, so we don’t have to go far for drinks or snacks, but if you happen to be on a different floor than your kitchen, I can see why some folks put a small fridge in the master bedroom.
- Music is good! Back to that TV in the bedroom, we have Direct TV with all the music channels you can imagine, so this comes in handy when we just want some nice music in the background. 🙂 Nothing like Jazz for us, you know with the sexophone…uhhhh, make that saxophone. 🙂
- And how about some sweetly-scented candles for good mood-inducing bedroom relaxation? I usually have a few of those around too.
So, those are some ideas to get that started. I’d love to hear some of yours, so do tell!
By the time you are reading this, I’ll be in Oklahoma at the ranch and having a good ole’ time, I’m sure.

I fully agree with your post and the furnishing and decorating ideas that you provided.
When I remodeled and bought all new bedroom furniture a few years ago, I made big efforts making my bedroom a very very cozy and comfortable room.
I added a lot of accents like e.g. some dried flowers, a beautiful candle placed on a very nice little corner table and special drapes framing the window. Unfortunately my bedroom isn’t big enough to add a recliner chair.
Lots of people do not pay much attention to their bedrooms since they feel like they anyway only use it to get a good night rest. Well, not me. I prefer to rest a bit on my comfortable bed and to relax or maybe to read a book instead of laying on the couch. I like coming into a warm and inviting bedroom.

Hi Rhoda!
Your tips are just wonderful for a soothing master retreat. If I had to add one I would say a serene and relaxing color palette. Ours is done in misty blue, ivory and chocolate brown. I adore it!
Blessings, ~Melissa 🙂

Such wonderful ideas. I think the bedroom is so often ignored and it really should be a warm and welcoming place. Great suggestions. Hugs, Marty

I have warm, relazing colors in my bedroom. Earth tones mainly with chocolate brown and cinnamon as accents (I with those colors were scratch and sniff). I also have a Hihimalayan salt lamp which really cozies up the room.

oops – typo – sorry, that should be “relaxing” colors 🙂

We have a TV in our room and I HATE it! I keep telling Mr. Scout to take it out. Maybe when we move I can convince him. 🙂

I love seashells, etc., so I have several seashells, pieces of coral, starfish and minerals on my bedside table and desk. For the bedroom, I like fabrics with a bit of shine to them – silk, damask, chintz – so my curtains, bedspread, bedskirt and chairs all have a subtle shine or shimmer to them. Fragrance is very important to me. I have a beautiful Cote Bastide candle on the bedside table. Sometimes I remove the candle and use a gentle room spray instead. And I always have a phalaenopsis orchid in my bedroom. Ahhhh, heaven!

Weeeelllll. We try to make our bedroom very simple and restful since we try to use it only for sleeping. We have noticed that the older we have gotten the more problems we have sleeping! So we mainly use it for sleeping–no tv, sometimes a tiny bit of reading right before bed (but we have plenty of other spaces in our home for reading). So simplicity and calmness is what we want in the room. Candles for romance (no flowers because my cat eats them and we wouldn’t want him coming in and waking us, now would we!)

I believe your bed is the most important place you can spend your time and money!
My husband and I like to have our bed as cozy and “fluffy” as possible. Yes, even my husband loves our fluffy bed! We have a four-poster bed and have found that hanging curtains from the railings makes our bed feel like the safest place in the entire world for us to be!
Sleep well!

What is better than a comfy chair and ottoman? TWO comfy chairs sharing one ottoman. This makes a nice place for both of you to sit, share moments of the day, maybe a glass of wine and play footsie the whole time. This, to me, is the ultimate master bedroom luxury.

The absolute most super duper important thing for me in the bedroom is my bed, of course. I love my bed. Its made of wood and wrought iron. Its a platform type bed so I don’t have to deal with a box spring. I bought the best mattress that I could afford. This mattress is quite thick and comfortable. It is like sleeping on a cloud. You see, I used to sleep on a cheap mattress and I woke up every morning with terrible hip and leg pains (I’m a hippie girl, and not the flower power kind). Ever since I got this mattress the pain is gone. I dress it up with the best possible bed sheets that my pocket allows, but never below 350 thread count and always ALWAYS in white because I find it extremely relaxing and luxurious. Which makes my next item a little bit odd in comparison. My favorite cover is a white and fluffy comforter from Anna’s Linens that didn’t cost very much. But the fabric of this comforter is very soft and wonderful on the skin. I also have a wonderful set of pillows that are just hard enough to support my head and neck, but still soft enough to feel very welcoming.
When I sink into my bed, lay my head on my pillow and cover up with my wonderful covers I feel like I’m sleeping inside a fluffy, white cloud. I LOVE IT.

Your ideas are all wonderful, Rhoda, and so is everyone elses. My master bedroom is so small that there is no room for anything but a bed and a night stand on each side. We do have a very good bed and like many have said, that is the most important thing! As well as a soothing color scheme.

Great suggestions for making the bedroom a haven. I have a precious little aqua silk chair in my bedroom, but for the most part, it has laundry in it ! Since the only one I share the bedroom with is my kitty that sleeps above my head most nights, I enjoy having the tv in the room for company! Ive learned so much from it being there….proactive gets rid of pimples, Orek vacumns are light as a feather, and I’ve memorized all the magic bullet recipes! Tee Hee!

I have to say I have been stumped on making our very large MB a haven. It is very hard to decorate (to me) because there is limited wall space even though it is a large room. We NEED a new bed, ours is too old and not comfy. I wish it were better….maybe one day….

Wonderful post!
great ideas, Rhoda!
You are one funny chick: s*xophone!
I will have to remember that!
Something we have in our bedroom are those battery-operated candles–I know that real candles might give more ambiance, but the fake ones are close enough, we have been know to fall asleep after listening to the saxophone, and forgetting about blowing out the candles, so this is a good alternative to burning down the house, right?
Hugs, sweet lady!

I love a cozy spot in the bedroom for relaxing. I took my inspiration for my Cottage Beach House bedroom from an old Coastal Living mag cover.

Ha! I’m not sure if you like the saxophone from this post (I think so?) but my husband is the saxophone player for our church!! “The largest church in America” hint hint…:)

Hey, Emily, oh this means I love the saxophone. Totally my fave jazz instrument & it helps promote romance, you know? 🙂
