Putting it All Together: What Gets You Inspired to Decorate a Space?

We are continuing our conversation this month on Bed and Bath ideas, so let’s keep it going by asking this question.

What gets you inspired to decorate a space?

For me, I can absolutely fall in love with a fabric and that’s all she wrote!  Like this one that went on my porch pillows.  When I saw it, I couldn’t get it out of my head and had to go back and get it at the store.  At 5 yards for $20, it was a great deal.  I now have my pillows AND enough of this fabric for something else, so now I’m mulling over my options.  This fabric could definitely work in a bedroom too or a bathroom, for that matter.  But, I think I’ll save the rest of this fabric for my kitchen perhaps.

What does it for you? Do you start with fabric, a rug, a piece of art?  Tell me what inspires you, please!

Since I’ll be heading to the ranch to meet Ree in a few short days and participate in my little video segment of our promotion, we will be using reader’s comments for our video discussion, so go ahead and let me hear it.

Head on over to the Putting it All Together page for more on this subject from the other girls who getting in on the discussion.

I love the fabric! It would fit perfectly in many rooms in my home. It’s fun to find an inspiration to start decorating a space!

I am inspired by blogsites like yours, A Lettered Cottage, The Pioneer Woman, Acanthus & Acorn, A Country Farmhouse, etc. I may see a paint color, fabric swatch or piece of furniture used in a unique way and my mind begins to frantically find a way to use it my house…sometimes too frantically for my husband! Keep up the great blog… I love it.

    Hi, Rhoda
Wow,, so exciting,, you get to go to the ranch and meet Ree.. I love her blog. As for what inspires me .. I get inspired daily from blogs like yours and many many others who are willing to share ideas. Because believe me.. a decorator I am NOT. I struggle with the simplest things. In addition to blogs though inspiration can sometimes come from something as simple as something that I picked up at the flea market. Cant wait to see your video segment.

    Hi Rhoda!

Fabric definitely inspires me! I’m really picky, so I only find a patterned fabric I like every few years. But when I do, it becomes the basis for an entire room. Generally, I’ll use a patterned fabric for a side chair and a couple of pillows and the rest will be solid and/or textured fabrics.

Interior design books and magazines also inspire me, especially ones showing rooms by designers who use interesting accessories like Miles Redd or Nate Berkus. I’ve been known to plan a room around a decorative object!

It’s all about the paint color or piece of fabric for me. From there it seems to fall together. 🙂 Hope your having a great week!

Fabric definitely inspires a room’s decor for me. I especially love vintage styles. I have to say, I was “blog hopping” today when I discovered yours…absolutely love it!! Thanks for sharing all of your great ideas. Can’t wait to read your past posts.

I am so thoroughly visual.- magazines and blogs are my inspiration.
Once I have an idea from another source, then I can began the happy hunt of making it mine exclusively using flea market finds, fabric that
gives it the right flavor, and exploring paint possibilites. Love the helpful info found right on this blog – even has sources listed.
    Thanks friend 🙂

Blogs are a sure source of inspiration for me. Many bloggers, like you, make projects seem attainable– reminding readers that they too can transform a garage sale find or a clearance fabric into something that seems straight from a designer home. When brainstorming for our nest, I really focus on what I want the room to feel like (cozy, crisp, lush) and how we need it to function and go from there. Best of luck on your trip!

For me, well recently it was a combo of a color, then a piece of art that inspired my entire apartment, and I have run with the “theme” and tweaked it just enough so it is not over the top.

There are different items for different rooms. My scroll rug (pictured) was the inspiration for the livingroom. It includes: black, cream, red, sage.
My black stove and unfortunate yellow range hood and white fridge inspired a black, white, gray and yellow themed kitchen.
My bird pictures (not posted yet) inspired my colorful, yet tasteful hallway… including my $2.00 thrifted IKEA curtains!!
My new (thrifted) comforter inspired my bedroom which will be orange, black and brown.
My towel holder from TJ Maxx (silver swirls) inspired my blue/ brown/ swirl/ butterfly bathroom. Sounds “busy” but it’s not.

Rhoda, wow to nail it down to one thing would be impossible for me. I get inspired by my surrounding,no matter where I am . My mind just works that way. I am always on the hunt for a new idea or inspiration. If I am working on a particular project it will be the homeowners personality and the actual use of the space. What ever is important to them will become my inspiration, you know comfort, color, atmosphere. I did a post on what I call my design springboard, or jumping off point.

Looking forward to your discussion with Rhee!! Have a wonderful time. I think when your mind is creative it is always in motion, I know you of all people know what I mean, Miss Ingenuity!! Hugs Kathsyue

All sorts of things inspire me. (I’m about to attempt your painted stairs). I just redecorated my teen daughter’s room inspired by her new polka dot sheets. Her room is now bright and vibrant just like she is.

What usually inspires me in decorating is finding something special whether it be a piece of fabric, a curtain, a picture, or even an old apron (which is what got my ideas going for my kitchen and making it like an old farmhouse kitchen). Once that piece jumps out at you go with it! Look for things that go with it and build around that piece. Also don’t be afraid if you find something you like but it doesnt quite go to repurpose it with different paint or completely different purpose. There are many ideas on how to repupose things like turning an old beautiful picture frame into something to hang your jewlry from. Also be picky! Dont bring home something and then think why did I get this. Make sure it goes (or will go) with the original piece before bringing it home. This saves a ton of clutter!

Well I can be inspired by just about anything! I find I get really inspired to change things up when I look at my favorite Home Decor magazines, Ballard Catalog and most recently Rhoda’s great posts.

Hi Rhoda! You are going to have a fabulous time at the Ranch with Ree!

As for what inspires me when it comes to decorating as room, I would have to say it is color. I might find that color in an art print, fabric, or just a swatch I have absolutely fallen in love with. We have been slowly renovating our home for the last year and each room decision has been reach because of a color or range of colors that I totally adore right now (gray/blue/plum). These are colors that Audley and I both feel good about, I really find soothing as well as easy to decorate with.

    Wishing you a wonderful weekend!
