Sarah’s Fireplace Revamp

P

lease welcome another new blog friend, Sarah from Thrifty Decor Chick. I’m just getting to know Sarah in the last few months, but wow what this girl can do with power tools.  A lot, let me tell you!  She almost has me convinced I need to buy some for myself.  Except for my little beadboard wallpaper shortcut, I just might do that.  Sarah does the real stuff.
Welcome Sarah:

Years ago when we built our home, I thought it would be the coolest to move the fireplace from a spot between the two windows to the corner. I thought because the mantel would be so much deeper, it would be more fun to decorate.

Wow, was I wrong. I soon realized all of that space was much harder to accessorize. And the position in the corner made it impossible to do the traditional art I wanted to use. I finally found some iron pieces that fit nicely and hung them above:

But it was still wasn’t right. I knew my trusty molding and glossy paint would do the trick and I was thrilled with the result. I started with chunky molding along the sides and the top of the fireplace. I went to the edge of the mantel and then up to the ceiling, then met it up in the corner:

I wanted something that would highlight the ironwork, so I took skinny picture frame molding and made large rectangles on both the left and right walls:

I always make my squares and rectangles equal distance from every edge — I believe this rectangle was four inches from the mantel, the corner, and then the chunky molding on the sides and top.

I painted it all out with glossy white paint. I use glossy on all of my molding projects because I just think it makes them look more built in and professional.  I rehung my iron work and over the years have changed up the accessories a bit…

The molding and white paint make it the showcase of our family room. I love it!! Right now, it’s decorated for fall.   Molding does wonders — it can make a bland spot, or an area you love to hate, into one of your favorite spots in your home!

Isn’t that the truth?!  I’ve done a few molding projects in my house and I’m totally convinced.  It’s an easy way to add some instant architectural interest in a room.

Thank you so much Sarah, for stopping by for a visit!  If you haven’t been to Sarah’s blog, go on over. She is full of great decor projects on a budget, a girl after my own heart.

On Thursday afternoon, I’ll be hosting a fabulous giveaway AND a fantastic makeover will be revealed.  Don’t miss the fun!

Sarah, you know I think that looks fab-u-lous! As a matter of fact, I have a gel fuel fireplace that I’m thinking about moving into a corner (cause I don’t know where else to put it) and I immediately thought of your corner fpl! Although you know how to work some modling magic and I don’t!

    Hi Sarah!

Could you tell me the dimensions for your fp? I live in a rental w/o a fireplace and have been looking into electric ones, just wanna make sure it’s not dinky! Fortunately we are allowed to make improvements like molding. BTW, it looks amazing!

    Thanks!

Rhoda, that looks amazing!! Great job! I dod have to say that I am so sorry to barge inlike this, however, I am on a mission to win — rather to help someone else win. Did you see the Martha Stewart conest where one woman designs and decorate battered women’s shelters? Please go peek at my latest blog post and follow the link at the bottom and vote for Terry. And if you have time can you do a blog post to help spread the word about Terry Grahl. Thanks loads, Jenny
