Styling a Corner

What do you do with those empty little corners of your room?  Don’t forget to take a look at them for possibilities.

Do you have a spot that you can add a little desk and chair to make it cozy and interesting?  This is in our downstairs den and instead of leaving this corner empty, I added in a yardsale desk that was painted black.  I did have a simple wicker chair here that you can see in the first pic, but recently upgraded and found this pretty snazzy number at Homegoods.  And you know how much I love that place.  Great way to add a little style to a corner and have extra seating too.IMG_8467

They had several fabrics in this style to choose from (they are meant to be dining chairs), but I loved the tight pattern of this leopard print and there is a hint of aqua in the background.  The pillow, from Petit Coterie Etsy shop and the aqua Southern Living at Home vase are trade outs/gifts from former advertisers. Thank you both!IMG_8469

Gotta love that nailhead trim.

I stopped in Pier one and found these really cute wooden sticks for $3 per bundle, so I got 2 of them and they add some nice height to this corner along with texture.  Wall color in here is Sherwin Williams Believable Buff, a great neutral with just a little golden/yellow tone. IMG_8453

Texture is a very good thing to sprinkle around a room.  Mix those textures up for much more interest in your space.

Think:

  • Bamboo and wood
  • Shiny seashells
  • Nubby linen fabrics
  • Gleaming silver or golden bronze
  • Leather
  • Rough vs. smooth

That’s what mixing up textures is all about and your space will be better for it.

Do you have an empty corner that’s just begging for a style makeover?

Rhoda, I love your corner! I just want to bring my computer over and sit a spell. You are always so inspiring! I thought your cute Pier I sticks had little “Valentine hearts” on them…Oops…from the close up picture of the sticks and vase, the little pods look like Valentines on a stick! Donna

I have several corners in need of some coziness, and I love yours! That chair is really cute, I’ll have to check out the selection at Home Goods, one of my favorite stores also. Have a great day Rhoda!

Ah, yes, the dreaded corner!! We all suffer from them, don’t we? I love what you did … the chair is fun and perfect, and I love the height your new simplistic sticks add (oh, and the pillow is fab, too). Thanks again for the inspiration!! -Becca

Love the chair! It is perfect! I adore nail head trim…

I have to save a corner in my den for my HUGE ficus tree to reside in the winter months. I have had it for years and years and it is getting really, really BIG! Another corner in my dining room is the home to the silk palm I got from you at your yard sale. I sat it on a little stool which lifted it up just enough and I love it there!

    Have a great week!

In one corner, I have a bookshelf with a combination of books, framed photos and a plant on it. In the other corner, I just recently put my laptop desk and need to accessorize it a little more.

Thanks for the great ideas! Have a great week.

I’ve seen those chairs, Rhoda, and have wanted to get one or two myself. I just don’t have a space to put them at the moment. It looks great with your desk! I’m with you on corners ~ especially if it’s an empty corner and my eye keeps going to it. That means something has got to go there!

Thank you for the inspiration, Rhoda. I have a tricky corner that I’m struggling with, so I needed so oomph to get me going!

Had to chuckle…”empty corner”. How about cluttered corners. Like, everywhere in my house. Home today for the holiday and spending it clutter-busting! Then maybe I can think in terms of having decorative and interesting corners.
Sigh. I doooo love the corner desk, very appealing to the eye, and functional. Makes me want to sit down and dash off a newsy note!
