Summer Deck Refresh

I love sitting on our deck in the morning when it’s a bit cooler. It’s a great place to sit and have my coffee and morning devotions. We’ve been in our house for 7 years now and this deck space was one of the first outdoor spaces I put together and decorated since the backyard still needed a lot of attention to make it a haven for us. I added the sofa out there, along with my other faux wicker pieces I’ve had for many years and I got a table and chair set from Wayfair that was also brown wicker that lasted about 6 years before it started to really show its age. The hot weather started getting to it and it really needed to go inside before it completely fell apart, so I passed it on to one of Mark’s daughters since she has a screened porch and she’s enjoying it now. I was in the market for a new and somewhat smaller table and chairs and I found the perfect ones at Walmart. Come along for the refreshed deck tour!

The new table and chairs are a bit smaller than the other set I had, so it fits out here even better.

I’m an outdoor girl and can stay outside all day as long as I’m in the shade. I start here in the morning and then move below to the pool deck in the afternoon. We sure enjoy our outdoor spaces and are so thankful for them!

I love this table and chairs from Walmart. I did a little browsing online until I found just what I was looking for, but they don’t come as a set. I put them together myself and they work so well together. You can find them here. I bought 2 sets of the bistro chairs. The table is metal and is part of the Better Homes & Gardens collection, which I’ve found to be good quality and value.

BHG Metal Dining Table

Set of 2 Drew Blue & White Bistro Chairs

I love these bistro chairs and had long wanted a set. These are metal legs and faux wicker seats and backs. They come in a box and I fastened them together myself, it was very easy.

What I really love is mixing up the tones out here and adding in the new color and texture. Now it’s not all brown furniture.

We’re so glad that Mark rebuilt this deck last fall and added the new black spindles. I stained the deck in a semi-transparent stain and it looks so good now. You can see that entire project in the link above.

Another addition to the deck this summer is this table umbrella holder. I had a free standing umbrella stand that sat flat on the deck and it always had moisture under it when it rained so it wasn’t good for the deck floor. I started researching umbrella tables instead and found this nice Hanover Traditions table (from Amazon) that holds an umbrella. I had to put it together too and did it myself.

It’s perfect as a side table and I prop my feet on it too. This is such a great spot for morning coffee!

At night with the party lights on, it takes on a whole new ambience.

We so enjoy our backyard and summer is a lot more bearable with the pool and outdoor seating.

Sometimes it just too hot to be outside at all, but when it’s not this is where you’ll find me most days into the evening hours.

I adore my new table and chairs and hope they last for a long time too.

Outdoor living is such a fun part of summer and I love being out there.

Watching the sun go down is extra special too when we have skies like this! Thanks for letting me share my new finds with you, I hope this gives you ideas for your own outdoor spaces.

How do you combat the mosquitoes, particularly in the evening?

I’m not Rhoda but I am so pleased at how well Thermacell repellents work. They’re attractive enough, use chrysanthemum oil, USB charged or butane. The best price I’ve found is at Lowe’s. And they actually work, even where there’s lots of big mosquitoes like in Maine.

As Nancy mentioned, I have used the Thermocell’s before and they do work well. They have batteries and you have to keep them stocked with oil and the little pads that go in there. I still have them, but also bought these little citronella holders that burn with oil too and I’ve been using them this year. We don’t get a ton of mosquitos but I do notice them late in the afternoon sometimes. These are working for me:https://amzn.to/3SMsPRT and the oil:https://amzn.to/3SKdG3u

I always use my Thermacell repellant when outside. I am a bug magnet, so it’s a necessity for me particularly around dark, when the gnats and mosquitoes team up. I used the large butane device, and it protects me even sitting by our pool. Works well on our screened porch, also. Cannot say enough good things. Yes, I do have to buy the butane canisters and repellant inserts, but well worth it!

I’m curious if the metal table top gets very hot? You’re right about all the brown! This is just beautiful, you have the best taste of anyone, I love y’all’s beautiful home.

There’s a couple of hours that the table is in direct sun, but I haven’t noticed it getting super hot. Thank you, we really love and enjoy our home.

Super nice, Rhoda! I love your chairs you found at WM. I found some similar a couple years ago at Big Lots, believe it or not. I take them in for winter, and they’ve lasted well.

Thank you Rita, I will probably take my chairs in the basement during winter, they do stack. And I have a cover I can put on the table, so hoping they all last a long time.

Your new table and chairs are such a nice addition to your deck. Love your blue and white chairs — so pretty! Your umbrella table is exactly what we have been looking for so I will check Amazon and order one. Not only can you use it for an umbrella stand but so nice to have when you have a drink or snacks — or want to use as a footstool! Hope you and Mark and little Daisy have a great week. I missed seeing her in your pictures! Daisy is such a cute little dog and I’m so happy you have her! We sure miss our little “Princess” (Maltese). We had to let her go to “Doggie Heaven” almost 2 years ago. We loved her so much and had her with us for 16 years. She was our third little dog and we just decided that we would not get another one as it is too hard when it comes time to let them go — plus we are “older” now and would not want the dog to outlive us! We have a family living next door to us and they have a little dog just like our Princess so she comes over all the time. We love keeping her when they go away.

Thank you, Mary-Ann, that’s the best of both worlds, you have a doggie to love on.

Beautiful deck. Love the blue colors. I found that the best thing for me to combat mosquitos is a fan! I bring my electric fan out on my deck and point it towards myself. Long sleeves, pants, and socks! I also use a thermacel (doesn’t work really well).

Those do work well. Usually we have good breezes and don’t have a lot of mosquitos.

Love your table and chairs! Are the bistro chairs stackable? Would like them for our Florida place and we have to store everything in garage during off-season – thanks!
