What Colors do You Wear?

Most of you probably remember back in the 80’s when finding your colors in makeup and fashion was all the rage?  Color Me Beautiful was very popular and we were all trying to figure out if we were Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter.  I had no idea they had a website, but there it is. Check it out and you can figure out where you fall on the “best” colors for you scale.

Spring and Autumn are Warm colors and Summer and Winter are Cool colors.

I always thought I might be a summer, with my eye color, but I’ve also got freckles, which gives my skintone more of a yellow tone, and my hair color is more warm toned, so I think I’m definitely a Spring.  Anyway, I’ve figured out which colors look the best on me through trial and error.  When I keep getting compliments when I wear a certain color, I know that one is a winner.

So, here are my best colors, from my years of shopping and building my wardrobe.  I always get compliments on these colors and so these are the colors I gravitate towards when I’m shopping for clothes.

If you find out which colors look best on you, it makes it so much easier when you are out shopping. You can steer clear of the colors you know do not work with your hair and skin color and pick up the colors that do work.   It really is amazing how much color can make or break you and some colors or tones of colors really do wash out a complexion.

fuschia

Hot pink or fuchsia is one of the colors that I wear well and am told it looks good on me.  I have also worn light pink too, but think that fuchsia is better with my coloring and blonde hair.

Do you love my new boots?  I was shopping for another tall pair of boots online at Nordstrom and found these.  I thought they would be more of a khaki color, but they are actually a taupe/gray and I do love them a lot.  I ordered my regular size and they fit great and are comfortable, so they are a winner. I need to spray them with suede protector spray so they will stay nice and clean.

You can find the boots, Very Volatile in Taupe at Nordstrom, (affiliate link) if you are interested.

Hot pink is a vibrant color and it mixes well with black, white and gray.  Or just blue jeans, a staple in my wardrobe.

kelly green

Kelly green and most greens are also good on me. This is the Covered Perfectly top I got recently and it will be a great addition to my spring closet.  I will mix it with navy and white.

lime green

Lime green is another color that I get compliments on.  Surprisingly, I thought it might not be a good color on me, but when I wear it I always have people notice and comment, so I guess it does work for me. Lime green is a great color for spring.  Mix with white pants and sandals for a fun spring look.

coral 2

Coral is another one of those colors that seem to work for me. I love coral shades and mix it with gray, black, navy and white.  Changing out jewelry and scarves with all of these colors is a great way to stretch the wardrobe too.

aqua

Aqua and turquoise blues are good on me too. Brings out my blue eyes and I always, always get compliments on this color.  I have lots of turquoise jewelry and love this color all year long.  Mix with gray, navy, black and white.

So, do you know what season you are?  Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter?  Once you get that figured out, it really helps the clothing choices.

I think I’m a mixture of Spring and Winter. I can wear all of the colors you have on today, but I can also wear some of the Winter colors. Btw, I love your new boots! Thanks for all your helpful tips:)

I guess I’m totally wrong on my season. I went to the website and according to my hair color and tone, it said that I’m Autumn.

What an interesting concept to think about! I definitely tend to wear spring colors most- lots of navy, pink, and greens. The colors you tried on look beautiful on you!

I love all the colors on you! I think blonde hair gives more freedom in colors as it’s a sort of neutral, like in decorating. Ever color is an accent. I’m a blonde and I love all colors except red on me. Not sure why because it’s not a color I dislike…just never feel attractive in it!!

Thanks for a great post, Rhoda!

Funny story about this: When we lived in Texas in the 80s, someone gave me a gift card for a color analysis. I did learn that I am a summer, and I was given the swatches to match in a little pouch, the makeup suggestions, the whole deal. As I was leaving, I put on the brand new mink jacket that my husband had given me one week prior for our anniversary. The consultant told me it wasn’t my color!!! That dear man had saved, we had shopped, it was a huge deal. That was over 30 years ago, and I have never told my husband that story. I wouldn’t trade that jacket for anything–right color or wrong!

Rhoda: I always register as a W INTER & my closets are always filled with black, white & red -navys, federal blue,. I have learned to add a soft pink & the now popular green..am working on brown even! Because of the yellow under tones in my dark skin I must avoid orange & yellow. But that doesn’t mean I can’t have a YELLOW party in my Kitchen! !
