Most of you probably remember back in the 80’s when finding your colors in makeup and fashion was all the rage? Color Me Beautiful was very popular and we were all trying to figure out if we were Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter. I had no idea they had a website, but there it is. Check it out and you can figure out where you fall on the “best” colors for you scale.
Spring and Autumn are Warm colors and Summer and Winter are Cool colors.

I always thought I might be a summer, with my eye color, but I’ve also got freckles, which gives my skintone more of a yellow tone, and my hair color is more warm toned, so I think I’m definitely a Spring. Anyway, I’ve figured out which colors look the best on me through trial and error. When I keep getting compliments when I wear a certain color, I know that one is a winner.
So, here are my best colors, from my years of shopping and building my wardrobe. I always get compliments on these colors and so these are the colors I gravitate towards when I’m shopping for clothes.
If you find out which colors look best on you, it makes it so much easier when you are out shopping. You can steer clear of the colors you know do not work with your hair and skin color and pick up the colors that do work. It really is amazing how much color can make or break you and some colors or tones of colors really do wash out a complexion.
Hot pink or fuchsia is one of the colors that I wear well and am told it looks good on me. I have also worn light pink too, but think that fuchsia is better with my coloring and blonde hair.
Do you love my new boots? I was shopping for another tall pair of boots online at Nordstrom and found these. I thought they would be more of a khaki color, but they are actually a taupe/gray and I do love them a lot. I ordered my regular size and they fit great and are comfortable, so they are a winner. I need to spray them with suede protector spray so they will stay nice and clean.
You can find the boots, Very Volatile in Taupe at Nordstrom, (affiliate link) if you are interested.
Hot pink is a vibrant color and it mixes well with black, white and gray. Or just blue jeans, a staple in my wardrobe.
Kelly green and most greens are also good on me. This is the Covered Perfectly top I got recently and it will be a great addition to my spring closet. I will mix it with navy and white.
Lime green is another color that I get compliments on. Surprisingly, I thought it might not be a good color on me, but when I wear it I always have people notice and comment, so I guess it does work for me. Lime green is a great color for spring. Mix with white pants and sandals for a fun spring look.
Coral is another one of those colors that seem to work for me. I love coral shades and mix it with gray, black, navy and white. Changing out jewelry and scarves with all of these colors is a great way to stretch the wardrobe too.
Aqua and turquoise blues are good on me too. Brings out my blue eyes and I always, always get compliments on this color. I have lots of turquoise jewelry and love this color all year long. Mix with gray, navy, black and white.
So, do you know what season you are? Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter? Once you get that figured out, it really helps the clothing choices.

Hey Rhoda — love those boots! I was sold on them
too but sadly, they are out of my size 🙁 Keep the fashion posts coming — they are so real, and a welcome treat!

Those all look really nice on you. I absolutely agree that knowing your colors helps so much. There are certain peachy colors that make me look like I’m sick but bright corals work great. To get free shipping on an order last year, I threw a neon yellow shirt in with my goodies at Loft. That’s not a normal color for me but I ended up loving it. It’s fun to go out on a limb every now and then. 🙂

I bought the Color Me Beautiful book many years ago and went through the analysis — but I had already figured out I was an Autumn. And you’re right about the colors that capture your attention. The minute I enter a store my eyes gravitate to the earthy colors.

Hi Rhoda……I wear alot of the same colors you do except for corals. I can do a reddish coral but not too peach. Back in the late 80’s I sold Beauty Control and went to a seminar in Memphis for color analysis training ….large group & the head consultant color did color analysis on each of us quickly at the end. Everyone went to stand in their places except for me & one other girl and she asked the class , why we would still be sitting . The thing was we fell between the groups…..I was a winter/summer. I can wear winter lighter colors and summer darker colors. BUT like you I get tons of compliments on lime green . I’m not sure about what we did back then….I’m like you, just wear whatever I think looks good on me and avoid orange, gold, etc….colors that look strange & weird on me. You look great in your colors and have learned to work them well!

I was a summer when I was younger but now that I am embracing my going gray and looking great, I love the deep winter colors. Like you, fuschia and turquoise are two colors I love and they just make me feel happy. But Black is one of my favorite colors now however, I do use jewelry and scarves to pop it a bit. I do agree that knowing what looks good on you saves you time in shopping. I love to shop consignment shops but I just cruise the racks until I see one of my “colors”. Makes it easy!

My guess is I’m a winter, but regardless I know I have to wear cool colors and try to avoid warm colors because they do nothing for me. In the rare case I do end up wearing a warm color, I try to accent with a cool color, especially around my face. Yellow makes me look green, ha! The colors you wear do make a huge difference and I’m always surprised at how many do not pay attention to this very important detail. Great post!

Hi Rhoda, I’m a soft autumn. Years ago, I attended a class to determine my season of color using a 12 season palate. I have used this as a guideline since then. Thanks for sharing.

Clear, bright colors are best on me. I can also do pastel shades of those colors. I have dark hair and dark eyes and fair skin. I don’t look good in yellow, orange, brown, etc. which is fine because those are not colors that make me happy. On me or in my house. I look best in bright pinks, turquoise, shades of green, coral as long as it is a pinky coral, red (which I don’t wear much), etc. Also black, white, grey and navy. I do not wear alot of navy as for some reason it has always seemed old lady to me. LOL I have a couple of navy basic items and that’s about it.
I think if you look at your pictures above, you will see the darker, brighter colors look better on you than the green and aqua. The lime green you have on may be too light.

HI There Rhoda! I loved reading about and being reminded about Color Me Beautiful as I had not taken the time to think about this concept in years. I believe I am (mostly) a Winter, and you have inspired me to check my closet for those colors that are less than flattering and give them away to gals of different seasons! A good tip, I think, is if there are colors that aren’t necessarily in our palette , but we love them, to use those colors as accents with scarves, jewelry , etc. Thanks Rhoda!

You look great in all the colors but fuchsia is really my favorite on you. You look absolutely beautiful in that color. I know you can’t wear it everyday but wear it often. Love the post you are doing on style.

Everyone can wear every color, it’s the shade that makes a difference. And no not everyone can wear black or white. white washes out your face and black makes it look harsh unless you’re a true winter. Pay attention to others and you’ll see exactly what I mean. And all of us know the colors we love and which ones look good on us and we tend to gravitate to those colors. Color Me Beautiful was on to something!!!

Hi Rhoda! I think the coral looks great on you and from your earlier post blacks and tans work well on you as well!

Hi Rhoda! Happy Wednesday! A balmy 30 and sunshine, -7 below 2 days ago in the Midwest! I LUV color and all the photos are so pretty , I really think you can wear just about any color…… I wear so many colors from one extreme to the other. Makes me feel good in this cold climate . I’m also into wearing the neons to the gym, it (lol) motivates me!
Thank you for showing us beautiful color and hoping people will try it. It makes a huge difference in your mood for the day, and they might get a few complements along the way!

I am definitely Clear-Spring. I wear medium value Spring colors, more on the bright side of things. My wardrobe is black and white based with pops of cobalt, medium to bright pinks, lime to kelly greens, bright citron to yellows. In all of the above pictures I like the medium value colors on you best. The first two picts and the coral look great on you. To be honest you are so pretty anything looks good on you so we are really talking good to Best. I know you are striving to be the BEST YOU you can be and I admire that whole way of thinking. More power to you!!!

You know you are living the “Color me Beautiful” philosophy when after about two years your ministers wife askes if you always wear red, black , or white. My answer was almost always!! Makes packing for a trip and shopping easy.

I am a WINTER color person. I wear dark colors most of the yr. Even when I wear a teal or a lighter color, I wear black pants. Purple is a great color on me but so is red. I try to lighten it up in the spring and summer but like I said…..usually I have black on somewhere.

I think the pale yellow makes u look a bit washed out…but I love all the other colors on you…im a redhead pale skinned don’t know what I am lol

I certainly do remember Color Me Beautiful. I worked for a major cosmetics company at the time. Women would come to me, knowingly posture and announce, “I’ve just had my cuh-luhs done!” Here’s the thing: Like paint, it is all about the undertones.

I enjoyed this post. I have light brown hair but wear most of the colors you mentioned. As I sit here and write this I have a red sweater on with a leopard print scarf. I was reminded of how my first grade teacher told me that I looked beautiful in red. Funny what you remember after all these years. I still get compliments on red but I think fuschia looks best on me.
