What parent has never said those words?
Oh, I bet you have. That’s one of the things that happens in any family. Someone is always going to leave the lights on.
Well, there’s a way to avoid that in your high traffic/kid zone areas. Lutron has come out with a product, a motion sensitive sensor that automatically turns OFF the lights when it doesn’t detect motion in a room. You can set it from 1 minute to whatever and when that room is quiet and idle, the lights will automatically turn off. And the light will automatically turn ON when you enter the room.
That’s pretty cool, don’t you think? It’s amazing all the new products out there and this is one that I love! Lutron asked me to try out one of their products and share it all with you, so let’s get started.
There’s a giveaway at the end, so don’t miss that!
The Lutron Occupancy Sensor switch is really very neat. Once installed, you can set the timer to however many minutes you want to have it stay on before it automatically switches off.
And it’s all from motion in the room. Those kids going in and out of the bathroom leaving the lights on? Yeah, those days are over with this gadget!
I decided to put mine in the laundry room. Sometimes we are in and out of there and forget to turn the lights off so this will come in handy.
After 1 minute, the lights will go OFF automatically. Love that!
Here’s how easy it is and I’ve got a little video to share that too. You remove the old switch, then hook up black to black and black to tan (my extra wire was tan, not sure if that is universal), but the green wire is the ground wire as is that silver wire that comes out of the Lutron. Just wrap the silver and green wires around the grounding screw, screw all of the screws back in and reconnect to the wall.
The sensor works with all light bulbs, including incandescent, halogens, fluorescents, and more. It is also available in the occupancy sensor and dimmer switch as well. I just chose the occupancy sensor.
That’s it! Then you can set the timer to whatever length of time you want for your switch to go OFF when not in use. I think this is great for families with kids. Imagine all the arguments than can be saved with this? You can find out more about the Maestro Occupancy Sensor at the Lutron site.
No more yelling, “Who left the lights on?”.
Check out the video below for installation ease. Someone mentioned that I didn’t say to turn off the power to the light switch before installing, so YES, definitely DO turn off the breaker to that room before doing any electrical installation.Â
Now, for some fun for all of you too, Lutron is offering up 5 of these Lutron Occupancy Sensor switches for 5 winners on my blog. All you have to do is leave a comment telling me the room you’d like to use it in. You can chose the Occupancy sensor or Occupancy with dimmer too. I’ll choose 5 winners in a few days and then they will get the chance to try out a switch too. I really like how this works and I think ya’ll will too!
If you don’t win the giveaway, here’s a coupon code for you!

Note: This is a sponsored post by Lutron. I was compensated to try this product out and share it with all of you, my readers. All opinions and how it was installed are all my own words.Â
Kitchen is the room that I would install this. What a neat idea. My office has something similar but not as sleek. I hope I win one. Thank u for the opportunity.
The basement light is always left on by a certain someone. Hubby are you listening?
So handy for the basement!! Thanks Rhoda!
This is so cool! Thank you and thank Lutron. This is easy…the kitchen! That downstairs light is always being left on in my two-story when anyone runs upstairs! Thanks again!
In the basement. My light switch is not by the stairs, so I walk in the dark to turn on the light AND I also walk in the dark after I turn off the lights.
Bad planning on someone’s part when they wired the house in the 20’s.
I would use it in the laundry room. My husband is always turning it off on me.
This is fantastic! I’d use them in my kitchen, the kids’ rooms, and their bathroom especially! (If I win one, I’ll HAVE to get more.)
Thanks for the chance to win. 🙂
I use these at work (I’m in maintenance at a hospital) and I would Loooove to have one in my garage. Its a bummer to go down the stairs to turn off the light!
Is there anything you won’t promote in order to get something free? I know I’m not the only one thinking this. Have you run out of things for your father to do?
Come on, Jane, that’s really not necessary to say. I do try out new products and get paid for them, yes that is part of what I do to make a living. I love using new products and doing giveaways for my readers too. I think most of them appreciate that and like it. My sponsored posts I try to keep to a minimum. There is plenty more than I share other than those.
This would be great for my laundry room.
My kids would have to duke it out for one of their bedrooms 🙂
I could use this in the kitchen! We are always leaving the light on in there. This would work great!
I think I would also use this in my laundry room. It’s also the room we come into from the garage and often times have our hands full, so the light would be automatic. Thanks Rhoda for the chance to win one!
These are wonderful! Saving time and energy (plus the energy it takes us to walk across the room and flip the switch — LOL — that’s also called exercise!). I’d like a half-dozen of them! The bathroom light seems to be the one that’s most often left on at our house.
I would love to use this in my living room/dining room/kitchen which are all open to each other. There are so many switches between the 3 rooms and having moved in recently, I can’t keep track of them all yet. With this, I wouldn’t have to mess with the switches as much!
Would love to have this in my daughters room. Don’t know how many times I’ve found the light on and she left the house hours ago!
Definitely the bathroom in our house…some days I think I have turned off the kids’ bathroom light 10 times. Although the master closet is another light that seems to stay on. Both of the rooms could benefit because the light really heats up the room.
What a brilliant idea – would love to install one in our walk-in pantry.
so many choices, only one prize!! I’d say, the kitchen. That one drives me nuts!
I would love to have one of these in my master closet but then I realized the switch is out in the hallway so it doesn’t seem like it would work. It would also be handy in the laundry room since my arms are usually full when the switch needs to be flipped. (Of course my cat may not think it is so cool if she is big enough to set it off when she uses the litter box in the middle of the night.)
