Who Left the Lights On?

{Giveaway is Closed}

The winners are:

#14 – Shirley

#27 – Joyce

#61 – Carolyn

#63 – Melissa

#82 – Sharon  – Congrats ladies, you’ve all been emailed!

What parent has never said those words?

Oh, I bet you have. That’s one of the things that happens in any family. Someone is always going to leave the lights on.

Well, there’s a way to avoid that in your high traffic/kid zone areas. Lutron has come out with a product, a motion sensitive sensor that automatically turns OFF the lights when it doesn’t detect motion in a room. You can set it from 1 minute to whatever and when that room is quiet and idle, the lights will automatically turn off.  And the light will automatically turn ON when you enter the room.

That’s pretty cool, don’t you think? It’s amazing all the new products out there and this is one that I love! Lutron asked me to try out one of their products and share it all with you, so let’s get started.

There’s a giveaway at the end, so don’t miss that!

Lutron sensor

The Lutron Occupancy Sensor switch is really very neat.  Once installed, you can set the timer to however many minutes you want to have it stay on before it automatically switches off.

And it’s all from motion in the room.  Those kids going in and out of the bathroom leaving the lights on?  Yeah, those days are over with this gadget!

Before switch

I decided to put mine in the laundry room. Sometimes we are in and out of there and forget to turn the lights off so this will come in handy.

lutron sensor switch installed
After 1 minute, the lights will go OFF automatically. Love that!

wiring lutron sensor

Here’s how easy it is and I’ve got a little video to share that too.  You remove the old switch, then hook up black to black and black to tan (my extra wire was tan, not sure if that is universal), but the green wire is the ground wire as is that silver wire that comes out of the Lutron.  Just wrap the silver and green wires around the grounding screw, screw all of the screws back in and reconnect to the wall.

The sensor works with all light bulbs, including incandescent, halogens, fluorescents, and more.  It is also available in the occupancy sensor and dimmer switch as well.  I just chose the occupancy sensor.

That’s it!  Then you can set the timer to whatever length of time you want for your switch to go OFF when not in use.  I think this is great for families with  kids. Imagine all the arguments than can be saved with this?  You can find out more about the Maestro Occupancy Sensor at the Lutron site.

No more yelling, “Who left the lights on?”.

Check out the video below for installation ease.  Someone mentioned that I didn’t say to turn off the power to the light switch before installing, so YES, definitely DO turn off the breaker to that room before doing any electrical installation.

Now, for some fun for all of you too, Lutron is offering up 5 of these Lutron Occupancy Sensor switches for 5 winners on my blog. All you have to do is leave a comment telling me the room you’d like to use it in.  You can chose the Occupancy sensor or Occupancy with dimmer too.  I’ll choose 5 winners in a few days and then they will get the chance to try out a switch too.  I really like how this works and I think ya’ll will too!

If you don’t win the giveaway, here’s a coupon code for you!

We have one of these type switches in our lake home. We put it in the “toilet room” of the master bath..you know, the separate potty room. It is great at night because you do not have to fumble for the light switch, it just comes on when you enter, and then it acts as a night light as you make your way back to bed. As soon as you get back in bed, it turns off!

The laundry room for sure! The dog’s kennels are also down there and I hate being the one to turn the lights out on them when I tell them goodnight. lol

In the middle of redoing a toy/play room for my new addition! I have been eying these switches at Lowes’, but at their price, they haven’t been a top priority… winning one would be great for sure!

Hi Rhoda, The LUTRON Occupancy Sensor would greatly benefit my senior citizen parents in terms of SAFETY.
So many people are victims of accidental falls during the dark hours of the night – resulting in broken hips, and worse. The
Lutron can help prevent these accidents!

Rhoda, I would love one in my laundry room! Seems the light is ALWAYS left on! I blame it on my husband or sons, but it’s probably me leaving the room with an armful of clothes to fold! I need this helpful item!

Oh, several places! The laundry/craft/sewing room or the attic or the garage or my closet. As you can see, I need several of these. To win one would be a help!

My special needs grandchild likes to go to the kitchen and get a drink in the middle of the night and always leaves the light on. The light will be on for the rest of the night unless we find out about it.

For sure the laundry room. It is down 2 fights of stairs and half the time I am returning with a basket of clothes. I forget to use my elbow to turn off light and then am too lazy to run down again.

My son(6) gets ready for school in the mornings and always forgets to turn off his light! School started last Tuesday and the light has been left on everyday. When I get back from taking them to school I’ll turn it off but if I have an appointment I forget and then it’s left on all day! I would love to put one of these sensors in his room!!!:)

Hi Rhoda , what a brilliant idea this is ! I have a deaf dog from birth . I think one of these lights for her would be perfect, when she is sleeping she doesn’t need the light on but when she is awake and moving around she does. She is very disoriented if it is dark not being able to hear. For me it would be fantastic if I go out and come home later I don’t have to leave a light on for her she can regulate it herself. Donna

The kitchen – we’re forever leaving the lights on when not necessary.
