Who Left the Lights On?

{Giveaway is Closed}

The winners are:

#14 – Shirley

#27 – Joyce

#61 – Carolyn

#63 – Melissa

#82 – Sharon  – Congrats ladies, you’ve all been emailed!

What parent has never said those words?

Oh, I bet you have. That’s one of the things that happens in any family. Someone is always going to leave the lights on.

Well, there’s a way to avoid that in your high traffic/kid zone areas. Lutron has come out with a product, a motion sensitive sensor that automatically turns OFF the lights when it doesn’t detect motion in a room. You can set it from 1 minute to whatever and when that room is quiet and idle, the lights will automatically turn off.  And the light will automatically turn ON when you enter the room.

That’s pretty cool, don’t you think? It’s amazing all the new products out there and this is one that I love! Lutron asked me to try out one of their products and share it all with you, so let’s get started.

There’s a giveaway at the end, so don’t miss that!

Lutron sensor

The Lutron Occupancy Sensor switch is really very neat.  Once installed, you can set the timer to however many minutes you want to have it stay on before it automatically switches off.

And it’s all from motion in the room.  Those kids going in and out of the bathroom leaving the lights on?  Yeah, those days are over with this gadget!

Before switch

I decided to put mine in the laundry room. Sometimes we are in and out of there and forget to turn the lights off so this will come in handy.

lutron sensor switch installed
After 1 minute, the lights will go OFF automatically. Love that!

wiring lutron sensor

Here’s how easy it is and I’ve got a little video to share that too.  You remove the old switch, then hook up black to black and black to tan (my extra wire was tan, not sure if that is universal), but the green wire is the ground wire as is that silver wire that comes out of the Lutron.  Just wrap the silver and green wires around the grounding screw, screw all of the screws back in and reconnect to the wall.

The sensor works with all light bulbs, including incandescent, halogens, fluorescents, and more.  It is also available in the occupancy sensor and dimmer switch as well.  I just chose the occupancy sensor.

That’s it!  Then you can set the timer to whatever length of time you want for your switch to go OFF when not in use.  I think this is great for families with  kids. Imagine all the arguments than can be saved with this?  You can find out more about the Maestro Occupancy Sensor at the Lutron site.

No more yelling, “Who left the lights on?”.

Check out the video below for installation ease.  Someone mentioned that I didn’t say to turn off the power to the light switch before installing, so YES, definitely DO turn off the breaker to that room before doing any electrical installation.

Now, for some fun for all of you too, Lutron is offering up 5 of these Lutron Occupancy Sensor switches for 5 winners on my blog. All you have to do is leave a comment telling me the room you’d like to use it in.  You can chose the Occupancy sensor or Occupancy with dimmer too.  I’ll choose 5 winners in a few days and then they will get the chance to try out a switch too.  I really like how this works and I think ya’ll will too!

If you don’t win the giveaway, here’s a coupon code for you!

These sound great!! I would love one for the laundry room, or for our bedroom closet, and of course the kitchen. Those areas always seems to be well lit when no one is in there! 🙂 Thank you Rhoda and Lutron for this opportunity!

Would be wonderful to have one of these in the hall bathroom. With five grand daughters under the age of 10 coming and going the light is ALWAYS left on.

What room wouldn’t I use it in? With all these kids and a forgetful hubby, I seriously could use one in each room! Definitely the bathroom for starters though.

I love how easy the are to install too!

I would like to have them in my bathrooms but the switches are outside the door in both bathrooms. I could really use them in the kitchen, the hallways, the dining room and any other room that’s not a bedroom. With 3 kids and a husband leaving lights on all the time, I spend a good potion of my day flipping switches.

We’ve had these light switches at work for several years and they are great. We have a separate garage with a room above the parking area and it would be great to have a light switch for the lights in that room. When I pull in our driveway, I can in the window that the lights have been left on. This woud save me many trips upstairs to cut off that light. Thanks!

All the rooms! I am the occupancy sensor! With four children, eight grand children, one great grandchild and a husband that never remembers anything, let alone shut off a light, I’m tired, I would love sensors that would shut off my lights. It would be a dream come true!

There are two places I would place one. Either my 8 year old son’s bedroom or in my basement where my 42 year old “child” aka husband always forgets to turn the light off.

Our entryway light and the outside light are on the same switch and I can’t leave the outside light on because of the florida BUGS! I would love to be able to not walk into a dark entry when I come home late – this would be the perfect solution! Thanks

The foyer/dining room light when I walk into my house via the front door. It would be nice to have that automatically turn out when I come home when it’s dark and have my hands full. Thanks for the chance to win! Looks easy enough that I could install it myself!

I would start with one in the kitchen. Seems like we always leave the light on with our hands full leaving the room. Actually there are several places this would be perfect!

Believe it or not, I need one in the hallway! It’s not a dark hall, but my family can’t walk down the hall without flipping the light on…and leaving it on. I’m constantly flipping off that light!

PLEASE turn off the power to the room you are working on before you attempt this. I’m sure you overlooked mentioning it, but please turn off the breaker switch to the room you are messing with.

I could so use this in my daughter’s room. The light seems to always be on because ” I’m going right back in there mom”. Not!! Or worse yet, “I forgot”, again.
