Banquet at THE Club

Last week, we had the pleasure of attending a fundraiser banquet at THE Club for our Holiday House missionaries, Elizabeth and Gary Wilkins of By Provision, and the keynote speaker was Coach Gene Stallings.

If you didn’t read about my first visit to THE Club, click over there and see it in the daytime.  Fascinating place, I know many of you here in Birmingham know all about.

The light was dim, but we took a few pics over by the window, in hopes that the lights of the city would show up.  Just a little sidenote, I went to my consignment store neighbor’s yardsale last week and picked up this adorable little cut-in INC top for $2.  Totally cute, huh?  And of course, I love black and white. This is a sweet friend of mine from church, Janice, and we sat with her and her hubby at their table and had a lot of fun.  Really enjoyed the evening.  Janice and I are both gym rats.  Well, I work out a lot and Janice has been an aerobics instructor for about 20 years and is about as big as a minute.  She’s originally a Southern California girl, but married right out of college to a Univ. of Alabama guy, so she has been here for a long time.  IMG_7025

All the tables.IMG_7028

The meal was really delicious and we all enjoyed it, including that chocolate pie for dessert.IMG_7031

Now, THIS is what we were waiting for and I almost stood up and cheered when the waiter brought out this plate of orange rolls. IMG_7029

And this is Elizabeth herself, half of the missionary couple who have devoted their lives to drilling wells in Africa for those who do not have clean water to drink, something we totally take for granted.  It was fascinating to see the video of how these people live, the girls carrying water on their heads in huge buckets.  I can’t even imagine how hard living like that must be.   We can do a small part to help them spread water and the gospel.

If you missed out on getting tickets for the Holiday House (click there to read all about the event) that I’ll be helping with on November 10th, please let me know if you’d still like tickets. I have plenty to sell and would love to see all of you here in Birmingham come out and support this worthy event.  ALL the proceeds will be going directly to By Provision.

One of my blog friends, Joanna, at This Southern Girl’s Nest, is having a Christmas ornament exchange party, so go on over and check it out if this is something you’d like to get in on.

I love The Club. My sister’s MIL still belongs so my sister and her family go on MIL’s membership…..

I hope to get to Bham real soon (hopefully). Tomorrow is Shannon’s b’day and we’re having a combo football party/b’day party at her house tonight (War Eagle!)

    Love ya,

Well, it took me a long time to finish this because somehow I missed the posts about the Holiday House, Jack and THE Club so I had to go scooting off to read those and then come back. Thoroughly enjoyed seeing the photos of you and your husband…beautiful couple! Loved the Holiday House and can’t wait to see the photos of your room all decorated for Christmas! I’m afraid that I too would have a hard time paying attention to Dr. Stanley, sitting in that lovely place. Your story about THE Club reminded me of several clubs in Atlanta that I often frequented as a corporate executive…Cherokee Town Club, The Capital City Club and the Piedmont Driving Club. I was never part of the “club” set growing up either so these visits were always fun for me. Your reaction to the orange rolls at THE Club was much like mine to the special crackers served at the Piedmont Driving Club. They are similar to soda crackers baked with butter…I think they are dipped in ice water first…I have not been able to duplicate them but might try to look online and see if I can find a recipte. I don’t know how they do it but I sometimes think of them and my mouth waters…like right now!

Didn’t mean to write a book here…just one more thing…don’t be afraid of yeast…the only way to ruin it is to let it get too hot before you are ready for it to. I am heading now to get the website for the orange rolls and will let you know how they turn out!

Thank you for giving me the idea to search online for the recipe for the soda crackers! Here’s the link…nothing else this easy, could taste this good:

So great to see you enjoyed your second trip to The Club and for a very special event at that! You look great:) We have always loved Gene Stallings as well and he lives about 60 miles from us now!! I engraved some things for their family when they lost their sweet son. What an inspirational family to all that have crossed their paths through the years.
    Blessings today and always,
    Kaye

Gene Stallings is wonderful!!! His wife is a gifted speaker as well. I’m blessed to have had friends who knew the Stallings very well, so I’ve heard lots of wonderful stories about them and Johnny.
