Inspired by photos like the one below, I’ve had my eye on these huge old wine bottles that we are seeing everywhere. I just found out they are officially called demijohns. Well, I’m likin’ the demijohns. (from Southern Living, February 2010)
I first took notice of these in person down at an antique shop called The Plunderosa (I’m dying to go back here by the way), on the way to Gulf Shores and even took pics of these pretty old bottles. I have thought about these bottles ever since and kicked myself for not buying any. But, now I have a couple of them! I was able to do an online party with Willow House and got to purchase these at a discount. My blue bottle envy has been satisfied. These are hand blown with those pretty bubbles inside the glass and oh, so pretty. I filled them up with some turning Fall leaves and they really make the room come alive. So, you can check them out too if they strike your fancy or find your own antique bottles. Note: Even though Willow House is a sponsor, the party was not part of the package. I just love the bottles and wanted to share them with you.
What do you think about these big blue bottles? Are you craving some for your space too?

And bought a seltzer bottle at an antiques fair a while back that I love but that nozzel is broken : (

I do like the demijohn bottles (had no idea that’s what they were called either), but I don’t have any. Maybe I’ll get lucky at a yard sale this fall! I also have blue glass insulators on my mantle! Daddy has tons and I thought a cool addition to my decor. I have also been looking at Uppercase living items lately. I may just have to take her up on that discount!

Due to their size I think they easily make a statement in any room. I’ve been wanting some for my porch. Gorgeous photos!

Oh my Gosh!! I have driven past the Plunderosa on several occasions and am dying to stop! I am so glad you mentioned that shop…I shall not resist the urge to pull in next time. Super cute way to bring fall indoors.

I love the look of these bottles…so much more than a vase in a design scheme. And I love the texture they add to a room…

I am craving a demijohn – I think the look is just timeless since you can change it for each season.

Hi Rhoda, love your blue glass bottle it is so pretty with the bubbles in it. I love the Demijohns that have the basket weave around them for fall, also, they are so pretty and textural. I am sure you will have one of those soon also!!! I am playing catch up. I have been on a 3 week vacation. I got to go to the Holy land and walk where Jesus walked, what an amazing experience it was to walk on the Via Dela Rosa, Kathysue

Hi Rhoda, I purchased three dimijohns from Plunderosa several years ago. Then they had the best prices on them anywhere. I recently did a post about finding a large one at GW for $2.00!! In an antique shop this size sells for $100+. I love your new bottle, especially the pretty blue color.

Well, who knew that I loved demijohns, too? 🙂 Glad to know these big, fat bottles have names. Would love to have one for my breakfast table. They remind me of Lauren’s house from Pure Style Home.

Ohhh! Thanks for sharing these Rhoda–as well as their “official name.” I like the green ones best, but they’re all lovely!

Oh Rhoda- love them!! They actually always make me a little sad because I had the best vintage demijohn- HUGE!!- from a thrift store for only $19 and an electrician was in our house & broke it 🙁

Rhoda, I’m so glad you’re enjoying the Lady Jane Bottleneck Vases you earned through your online party – I didn’t know they were called demijohns, either! I’d like to let your readers know that through October 31, they can purchase the large blue one and get the small green on half off. We also have a new online outlet center, if they’d like to get some early Christmas shopping done, too – just click on my Willow House button!

Rhoda,
I am right there with you, these bottles are beautiful! My husband is concerned that I am becoming a hoarder since I refuse to throw out any used wine bottle or really glass bottle in general. By the way the Sangria bottles are the best and they are only $10.00 so dink some wine and then you have the bottle, awesome combo if you ask me.

I learned something today, too! I have an antique one, I’m assuming. It is old and dirty. I liked the look of it and kept it when it came my way, but I haven’t done anything with it. Mainly because it is so dirty inside (looks like they stored dirt in it!) and I don’t know how to clean it. Any suggestions?
Dennis Neal says
Depending on their condition first try hot water and then maybe warm water and denture cleaning tablets Polident .
