I love the mountains of NC and when I found out that HGTV has just renovated a bungalow in that beautiful city of Asheville, I knew it would be fun to see. I have had the pleasure of visiting in person several of these HGTV homes over the years, so since I haven’t visited this one in real life, it was fun to take the tour online at HGTV. I also noticed that my talented and entertaining friend here in Atlanta, Brian Patrick Flynn, is the designer on this project which made it even more special to see. He’s super talented with putting rooms together.
HGTV has the whole tour online, but they gave me permission to share it here on my blog, so I thought you would love it too. They took a little old bungalow in need of some major love and renovated it into a sleek and sophisticated urban home. I love how it turned out so see what you think about it.
And, they are giving this house away, so you can sign up to win over there!
BEFORE: Cute bungalow home, but in need of some major love and care.
All Photos: David A. Land/HGTV Magazine
AFTER: Updated with a sophisticated color palette and high end modern finishes.
Love this country gate leading the way to the house on a pea gravel pathway.
Simple landscaping lets the house shine in its mountain setting.
Cozy and casual furniture on the front porch is so welcoming. I love all the blue that he used throughout the house.
Thought this idea of hanging grommet curtains on the porch was a great idea.
The entry opens right up in the living room, but a pretty vintage table acts as an entry
I love the mix of vintage and modern pieces in the home, also melded with some pretty fresh fabrics.
Blue in the living room are so very pretty.
The dining space is in between the living room and the kitchen.
Very cozy and pretty dining area.
Cow pictures have taken over it seems and they look right at home in this space.
The kitchen with that WOW wall of subway tile definitely has my attention. The black cabinets mixed with the rustic natural island is a nice combination.
All the light coming in and the tall ceilings make it feel so spacious.
Downstairs to the basement. All bedrooms on main level.
The guest room in purples and grays is very soothing.
Peeking back down to the living room.
This is a cute loft area.
The master bedroom in red, white and blue is very Americana and cozy feeling at the same time.
With plenty of white, it doesn’t look stale at all.
It’s easy to love these colors.
The master bath in white and navy subway tile is a standout.
Peeking past the master bedroom to the outdoors and the deck off the master.
How cozy and nice is this? Those striped red drapes make this space.
It looks fantastic from the back with those striped curtains and plants.
The backyard and fenced area.
You can’t beat Asheville for a beautiful Southern getaway spot. I love it up there. The Biltmore is nearby and there are lots of things to see and do in the mountains.
When I saw this picture, oh my goodness, I just had to laugh. I grew up going to sliding rock up there in the mountains of NC and it was way before they made an actual park out of it. This is one big hunk of rock and when we were kids, we would slide down it on our backsides (covered in cutoff blue jeans) and slide until we couldn’t stand it anymore. There’s a pool of water at the bottom.
Oh, the memories of childhood! And sliding rock…I’ll never forget it. Thought you’d enjoy seeing the Urban Oasis house in Asheville.
Speaking of Asheville, I’ve just been invited back to the Grove Park Inn in November to be a judge again in the Gingerbread House contest that they hold there annually and I’m just so excited to go back. My niece, Lauren, and I had so much fun last year and she’s going with me again. Pinch me indeed, I get to do so many fun things.
Nancy from RI says
Sorry for being negative but that fence reminds me of a concentration camp. Not a fan of this house to be honest.
Sandi says
I love the cottage but have to agree with you, not a fan of the fence it looks unfinished?
Bob says
Agreed. The fence is better suited for raising chickens. I heard they split the lot and the land adjacent to the cottage is now a separate lot rather than all part of the original land so expect another cottage to squeeze in that open space.
Carol says
I could live with the fence – stained- but can’t cover the huge tax bill?
Susan says
Beautiful makeover, thanks for sharing! Asheville is one of my all time favorite areas!
Shirley says
Enjoyed the house, but confused. The outside does not look like a two story.
mary says
Stairs are to basement. Bedrooms on first floor. Ladder to loft in kitchen.
Rhoda says
Thanks, Mary, good to know the layout. Its hard to tell in pics sometimes.
Penny says
Quaint little house, but what’s up with that fence?! I love Asheville!!
Rhoda says
You know, that fence reminds me of a chicken coop! Funny how we all take things differently.
Julia says
Thanks for the tour of this cute bungalow. It’s nice to see different decorating styles. I’m excited for you getting to go back to judge the gingerbread houses. Oh the places you get to go! Enjoy!

I love the bungalow. I think I would have put white cabinets in the kitchen, but it’s beautiful. I love the outdoor space from the master.
melesa garrison says
PS, Do you know the artist of the cow painting? I just love it!
Rhoda says
I don’t know any of the particulars, Melesa, only what is on the website.
Sandy says
Thanks for the tour! I’m not a fan of the fence either. I love most everything else about the house except the living room’s dark color pallette. I would definitely change out the fireplace. Love the kitchen and the bedrooms done in red, white and blue. I adore the cow picture! Hey, we all have different tastes so that’s what makes life interesting. I love the back deck and the front porch too.
Sallie says
Went to college at Montreat- how I love that area! Also as a child Sliding Rock was a must when staying in N.C.for the summer- few people knew about it- no handrails or restrooms- wonderful memories for sure!
Hannah says
Of all the houses HGTV has given away, I can truthfully say that could not give me this house. I hate the colors. Can you imagine how gloomy it will be in the winter? No thanks.
Lorraine Watkins says
Hannah if you win I will take it!
Teresea says
Do you know if it is open to the public for tours? Couldn’t find any info on physical tours on the website. I like most of it, especially the back deck and stair rail. Mix of the old and new.
Rhoda says
Teresea, I don’t think it’s open to the public. These giveaway HGTV homes are almost never open, I don’t think.
Lindi says
I would grow sweet peas or some other flower that likes to twine by the fence and create a beautiful living wall.
In the living room, put in a traditional arts and crafts fireplace with wood to match the front door and a mirror built in over the mantle. Add candles or small lamps on either end to bounce light throughout the room. It would be both cozier and brighter in what is already a lovely space.
I love the entire home. Sure hope I win! Thanks for the beautiful pictures. 🙂
Lindi says
Oh, P.S. Above a fireplace is never, ever a comfortable place to watch television.
Terry says
Love the house, I think the fence will weather and look nicer. Only thing….noooo antlers in bathroom! I thought the antler fad was over.
Jeanie says
Love the house.
Jane says
That kitchen would be an amazing place to hang out/cook. Really like it a lot. Good job giving a small, uninteresting house great attitude!
Pink Camellias says
I love Western North Carolina! We go to Asheville, Cashiers and Highlands frequently – I love to go there in the summer to get out of the Atlanta heat! We love to hike all around there and visit all of the waterfalls.
Lorraine Watkins says
I think the house would be a fun getaway place. I liked the way the front looks. I am not sure about those outdoor hanging curtains. I think they would get dirty. I loved the story about Sliding Rock. Sounds like fun. I grew up a mile from a small beach and love to remember teenage memories of sun filled days playing in the water. If you need an assistant to go on your adventures keep me in mind. You do get to do a lot of fun things. Are your invites related to the fact that you are a blogger? If so, perhaps I should blog, too…. I look forward to reading your blog every day. I like the way you keep your blog balanced and not just a running advertisement for something someone gave you. I think too much of that will cause bloggers to lose readers.
Rhoda says
Hi, Lorraine, yes I do get to do a lot of things because I’m a longtime blogger. Folks contact me for trips and other adventures, so it’s such a fun job to do. I love it!
Tina says
I had a trip planned to Asheville this fall that was postponed. Love this great city all the time but I was especially sad that I’ll likely miss seeing the Urban Dream House in person! Thanks for your great post Rhoda!
Rosemary says
This is the least favorite of the HGTV homes. Way too dark and some aspects are just not practical. They get lots of snow in Asheville and I wonder if the contractors ever considered how difficult it would be to shovel snow off pea gravel. By the end of winter all the pea gravel will be gone.
