Feature Friday: Master Bedroom Makeover

My friend, Debbie, finally got her bedroom done.  She’s changed out the linens in here a couple of times in the last few years and finally found something she wouldn’t get tired of so fast.  I think it turned out fabulously.

Picture 007

She will ask my advice on decorating projects, but then again, she has a good eye too and knows what she likes.  She finally settled on this pretty robin’s egg blue bedding, found some fabric for drapes and shams and got it done.  Picture 028

She found the comforter set, I think at Belks and then added her own fabrics for a more custom look.  The paisley with the rusty red tones really accent the blue fabric.  Picture 010

We went shopping one night looking for drapery  hardware and I told her we should try Lowes.  Lo and behold, these pretty coppery rods were on clearance for around $12 each, if I remember right.  Great price on hardware and the copper tones pick up the red in the fabric so well.  Debbie made these drapes all by herself and she is not an expert seamstress (or so she tells me).  I was totally impressed by how they came out, lined and everything.  That’s not a separate topper, but it’s sewn together with the main fabric. Picture 009

I love the contrast of the greeny/gold walls (Sherwin Williams Harmonic Tan) with the fabrics and it was already here from another variation in this room.  Luckily, it worked out great with the new fabrics too.

We found a pretty piece of artwork, an original oil, that has all the colors of the room in it.  She’s going to paint the frame a darker color to work better.   All the furniture is new to the room too.  This painted chest is a good accent piece. Picture 014

This is all Broyhill furniture and I helped her pick this out too last year.  It’s got some rustic charm, but still traditional (and it’s dark, dark brown not black).  I just heard her say she almost wishes she had not bought a set of matching bedroom furniture and gone the eclectic route.  That’s OK, we have other rooms to work on, Deb.  I’ve had to gently lead Debbie into the world of vintage finds and she didn’t come along all that easy, but I think I’ve finally convinced her of the beauty of vintage and painting old pieces.  🙂  She even said she wants to go yardsaling with me.  Now, that I’ll have to see to believe! Picture 012

Debbie styled the top very nicely. Picture 015

And has fallen for the birds like so many of us have.

Picture 029

The Pottery Barn Nest pillow was a present for her 50th birthday, from her kids, I think.  It’s perfect in here! Picture 021

And the bathroom got a makeover too.  That soft blue-green made it to the walls in here.  This is Sherwin Williams Quietude, one shade darker than my Rainwashed.  Lovely color, huh?Picture 020

She repainted the cabinets too and added a little glaze. Picture 022

Along with a vinyl saying over the window, appropriate for this space.

Picture 024

All ready for a soak in the tub.

I hope you enjoyed Debbie’s master bedroom makeover.  I thought it turned out so great and wanted to show it off for her.  We’ve been friends now for 4 years and love hanging out together.

I showed you their farmhouse here and here,  if you’d like to go back and see those pics. They live out in the country with other family members nearby and have a beautiful piece of property with a pond in the backyard.  A true Southern farmhouse style in an idyllic setting.

I’ve got a few more updates of Debbie’s house that I’ll show you later.   She used the beadboard wallpaper in a powder room AND my thrifting habits are rubbing off on her finally. 🙂

You make everything look so great Rhoda! I do need to give props to my daughter, Tiffany, for helping with the curtains and shams. She was the engineer and cutter outer. She also put the vinyl applique above the tub. She inspires me so much! I also need to give credit to Rick for leaving his hemorrhoid cream out by the toilet. Next time let me know when you’re taking pix of my br and I’ll move the tp and hide a few things! Let me know when yard sales begin!

Oh, and Tiff said she was the only one who gave me the nest pillow… no brothers involved. And Rick corrected me on the hemorrhoid cream – it wasn’t – but it’s funnier.

Great feature, Rhoda! 🙂 I love her bedding–especially how she “tweaked” it to make things look more custom. 🙂 I have large, dark furniture in my br as well…taking notes!

Cyndy, I think I got that one at Hobby Lobby or maybe Kohl’s. I’m sure I waited until it was 50% off.

Excellent post Rhoda and most excellent room Debbie. We’re going to have to call you two the dynamic duo!! Now I’m curious Rho do you get first dibs if you and Debbie spot the same items out thrifting/yard sales? hehehe. My rule is whoever has the truck wins!

I do have a question tho, concerning the paisley fabric. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I adore paisley and this pattern is perfect for a project I have in mind, perhaps in a slightly different colorway.

    thanks, Jill (JCinCA)

I love how this all came together…textures, prints, colors, fabrics, copper touch, the theme of nesting seems so relaxing for a bedroom but also keeps one’s interest as they look around at her artifacts and lovely furniture pieces. I’d love to know where she got the wall phrase and the NEST pillow? Finding one’s own sense of creativity can be so much fun in looking through yard sales, antique stores, and thrift stores.

    Definitely, a beautiful, peaceful room!

If I were Debbie, I wouldn’t darken the frame of the picture in the bedroom……the frame of a picture is to draw your eye to the artwork…..with all the soft blues and whites in the picture, a dark frame would overpower the subject matter. It looks lovely as it is….in my opinion. Lovely room and colors.
