Yesterday, we started Feature Friday early with a beautiful tour of a historic Marietta home. I know you’re enjoying the tour of Oakton, aren’t you? I shared Part 1 yesterday, so go back and catch up if you haven’t already. Oakton is a beautiful place!
So, we stepped through that door and here’s what awaited, a beautiful wood beamed kitchen with lots of bright colors.
Michelle collects folk art and this space feels homey and casual, with greens, reds, and yellows. I imagine a lot of TV watching goes on here.
This is where the family spends most of their time.
Breakfast eating area.
Entertainment center area.
Yellow walls and accessories.
Pretty sage green kitchen cabinets. Don’t miss the old pine floors.
This is a very comforting kitchen with lots of light coming in.
Sitting area off to the side of the kitchen.
One of the family dogs taking a break on the old woods floors.
Farmhouse sink.
Next we went out the back door to see the outside structures, like this old well.
There’s a kitchen garden out the back door. Of course, it’s winter now, so I can imagine how pretty all of this will be come spring.
It was a beautiful sunny day we had for strolling.
Kitchen garden
Backyard dining area.
Potting shed
Back of the house. That’s the kitchen there with the Juliet balcony.
With ironwork of oak leaves and acorns, loved this feature!
Backyard planted birdbath.
Twig gate
Tree with ivy growing up it. They have many acres of property here to take care of.
The gardens are old too, I read. This is a beautiful fountain in the backyard and they grow vegetables back here too.
A pretty sidewalk of stone.
Not to mention a huge pool and poolhouse.
The husband works on the top floor of this beautiful barn.
And does woodworking in this space.
Here’s the upstairs office. He has his own landscape design business.
Beautiful oak botanicals.
The side yard, where events and weddings are held.
Complete with a stacked stone fireplace. Gorgeous setting!
Michelle makes these beautiful oak cutting boards from wood on the property.
Love these!
And she collects heirloom seeds that she sells too. I love this family business they have going.
Side porch of the house.
How about a sweet tea on the porch.
I hope you enjoyed touring Oakton with me. It’s such a beautiful place and I’m grateful to the Goodman’s for letting us come look around at this fabulous historical home. It would be easy to think about how it would have been 100 years ago.
Today, Marty from A Stroll Through Lifeis featuring me and my home, so I hope you’ll stop over and read! Thank you, Marty!

Sorry to say, I do not agree with you on this house. The kitchen and family room was just filled with stuff. It was not attractive, just stuff all around. I did not find this house charming in any way. Think it needs lots of work.
Maureen says
If they were to try to sell this house the realtor would have them do a major cleanup. I like collections and a comfortable feeling in a home, but I did not find this attractive. True it is their house and they can do what they want. I am just surprised that they would want pictures taken.
Rhoda says
Maureen, this house has been in their family for generations, so you can bet they won’t be selling it. They live in it daily and enjoy the history that surrounds them. Everyone doesn’t have to love it as they do, but there’s no need to criticize just because it’s not your cup of tea.
Maureen says
I am not criticizing it, I am just stating my opinion. I think the house is cluttered to the point of being messy. My opinion. I am not saying it has to be yours. I didn’t know I had to agree with everything I see and not be able to voice my opinion. I will be sure not to do it again.
Cheryl says
Rhonda, thank you for sharing the pictures this beautiful home! I would feel like a kid in a candy store. So many awesome things to see. I would be mesmerized!!! I would
love hearing their family history and history of some of the items!
Not to offend anyone, to each his/her own, if they were to sell it, and a realtor were to suggest such a thing, I’d be getting another realtor…pronto! The contents/decor is a major portion of the charm and allure.
Paula says
Thank you for the lovely tour of this grand home and its gardens ! Just wonderful !!

I thought this house was very cool! Yes there is a lot of “stuff” in the kitchen, if they host weddings and such they probably need it. Also some things might be family heirlooms and have meaning for them. To each his own. I loved the color of the kitchen cabinets and the warm cosy feeling. And the house and gardens are beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Kirby Carespodi says
I LOVE the kitchen/great room! I think it shows personality and creativity. Frankly, my house has “stuff”–but it all has meaning and it helps inspire my writing. I am not enthusiastic about the sterile/neutral look that’s so popular right now. The pendulum swings, and I think folks need to make their house feel like “home”–whether it’s with a neutral, calm effect, or by surrounding themselves with the “stuff” they love.
Margaret says
I was also glad to see a home with “stuff” in it. I can’t imagine living without my things around. The neutral pared down homes look unloved to me. I could move right into this house and fill those shelves with my stuff as well.
Jane @ Cottage at the Crossroads says
Rhoda, thank you so much for giving us a tour of this fabulous old home! I could wander around this home for days looking at all the details. Oakton is filled with priceless antiques and collectibles and are displayed in such a way that shows how much the family treasures them. The owners seem to be the most interesting people!
Lisa says
I found it perfectly imperfect! I love to see a house lived in and loved…so REAL! Thank you for sharing!

Rhoda, Oakton is a beautiful home. I love all their collections and treasures. I would love to visit their garden in the warm months. Thank you so much for the tour.

I’m humming the theme to “Gone with the Wind.” Ahhh. See this house and surrounding acreage speaks to my Southern soul. Yes, Maureen, there is a lot of ‘stuff’ in this house, but I’d bet their possessions speak to them as well. I’m not a clutter bug, but I can appreciate the look – AND it reminds me so much of my departed mother. She would have squealed and oohed and ahhed over this home. Thanks, Rhoda – you helped me remember her this morning. Blessings.
Vicki Crowe says
Rhoda, this is a wonderful home and the tour was wonderful! I agree, i would love to see the outside in the spring. And the inside again at Christmas!
Lora says
Thank you for the tour..I love this house..It is well-loved and well-lived. Clutter is not always clutter. The stack of papers and magazines with the scissors on top, the pen and pad with glasses on top, the worn wood floors, a cabinet door that seems not to close completely and a dish cloth hanging on the faucet show me a real family lives here. A home you can be invited into without any pretense or apologies. My sincere best wishes to the family that makes this wonderful house a wonderful home..
Kim says
You hit the nail on the head with this comment. These homeowners are the most welcoming people in the world and every bit and bob has a story and meaning behind it. It is a lived in home and not a museum….thank goodness because there are plenty of those. I’m honored to call them friends and to be welcomed to the back door, around the kitchen sink or in a chair by the outdoor fireplace.
Pat@Back Porch Musings says
I would love to see the gardens during Spring and Summer!!
The dish cloth on the faucet reminds me of Harry and Bess Truman’s home in Independence Missouri. Bess went to her reward many many many years ago. The dish cloth she folded and placed on the sink, her final evening in their home, was still there in the kitchen. It was just one of many endearing qualities I loved about Harry and Bess’ home, when we took the tour a few years ago. It is a landmark home of one of our presidents and yet, beautifully “ordinary” at the same time. I love that!
Actually the kitchen is my favorite of the Oakton rooms.
Jamie b says
I love this home! They’ve used all my favorite colors. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Kay says
So enjoyed! gazing through the pictures you took. It was quaint, homey, and comfy. I think this home has character and everything in it seems to have its “place” there. So many many thing were interesting, the library, the old pictures on the wall, even the barn where the husband works. Thanks for the tour , you brought us place we have never been. I would love to have a peak again when there is color in the outdoors area and the flowers are being dried in the fall. Thanks again,
JanetLea says
I found it refreshing to FINALLY see some color!! Very interesting and you could spend hours just taking it all in! I prefer this to the all white blah homes any day!!
Marc Jones says
Wow!!! This is a large home with great old bones, floors ,the kitchen is spacious and the colors are warm and inviting. Now everyone knows that I like myself surrounded by a lot of accessories, books etc. but I would have to edit this home a bit and give it a new update. It is a beautiful place, the grounds are so gorgeous, and the potential is outstanding but Rhoda I have to agree with some of your readers in that there is a fine line between collections and clutter. I bet , given two weeks, with a crew, I could keep everything they have but have it not so cluttered looking. BUT, I agree with your readers also in that it is so good to see color and not burlap and creams and whites!!!!
In the end, what really matters is if this home makes the family comfortable and happy and if it does the way it is then it is perfect….for them!
Thanks for sharing, how fun to look at history in our town!

Rhonda, Ironically I have been searching the net for pics of “cozy” lived -in kitchens, since I am transitioning my kitchen decor from Christmas to winter. While I admire streamlined, organized kitchens, the reality is I have a difficult time trying to maintain this look and secondly, I
feel as if something is missing when I walk into the room. This morning when I went to your blog, I smiled!
The bottom line is we all have different decor taste, but as the saying goes “knowledge is power” and that is just what our talented bloggers give us on a daily basis; the ability to decipher what makes our hearts flutter or not! Personally, I much prefer seeing a variety of decor styles which allow me to pick and choose what may work in my own home or may allow me to try something new.
Thank you for sharing the Oakton home with us; but more importantly, thank you to the owners of this lovely historical home for showing us the “soul” of your home and family!
Suzette says
This is a beautiful old home. I could not live in the kitchen/den area with the cuttler, but I admire them for enjoying their home the way they see fit. I really appreciate you sharing these homes with us. I enjoy them so much. It def. gives you a different insight on the way we all see, and live differently! And there’s nothing wrong with that! Looking forward to the next one! Blessings!
Lisa says
Rhoda,
I adore this house, the grounds and the wonderful history of it. Thank you so much for sharing this lovely tour.
I would love to purchase one of those amazing cutting boards. How would I go about doing so??
Blessings,
Lisa
Rhoda says
HI, Lisa, I linked over to their website in my post, so go on over there to contact the homeowners. She has info on the website!
Jeanie says
I loved the colors and patterns, but there’s way too much clutter for me. It must take literally hours to dust.
Lauren says
This house just makes me nervous and uneasy with all the stuff around. There are some neat things, but they are lost amongst themselves. A collection of “things” does not a home make. Way too much clutter for me. Interesting to see though. Could definitely become lovely if half of it was disposed of! The home itself and property is beautiful. Less is always more.
