Once again this year, I have the opportunity to partner with Sherwin-Williams to redo a room, and my laundry room is the candidate. You’ve seen some progress in there since the beginning, but now it’s getting the final phase of makeovers done, and I can’t wait! This room is going to be combination laundry room, mudroom, storage, and gardening and you know I’ve added a sink in here to really make it useful. This post is all about choosing the paint colors in here.
There’s already a toilet stubbed in here too, so a toilet will go in the corner of my storage area and that will come in handy as well.
Let me tell you about some fun new color selection tools that are available at Sherwin-Williams now! One of them I really like is the ColorSnap Studio™ for iPad. You can download this tool, take a pic of your room with your iPad, and then define an area to paint or simply paint your space with the brush of a finger. Simple, right?
When starting a new project, this comes in so handy for finding the right color. Play around with it, and you’ll see for yourself. I use HGTV® HOME by Sherwin-Williams for the most part when I buy paint from them, and my local store has great customer service. I love working with them on my projects, not to mention their products are wonderful.
Match a photo:  If you see a color you love, simply take a pic and match the color in the photo to a Sherwin-Williams paint color for your room. You can play around with their color palette of over 1,500 colors to your heart’s content, finding just the right color for your project. All you have to do is download the ColorSnap Studio for iPad! These tools will come in handy for all sorts of projects around the house.

Just in case you’re new around here, this is the ugly space I started with when we purchased the house. UGLY to the max!

The walls are paper paneling and not at all pretty, but I was determined to make the best of my space.

I painted the floors with Sherwin-Williams Porch and Floor enamel (click that link to see the how-to’s), sealing it with a Wet Look Concrete Sealer, and it turned out fantastic.

As you can see here. This is where we left off last, and my dad and I added the baseboards and trim molding to the doors and floor. It was looking better already, but that was just one phase of my makeover. After one coat of white paint, it looked pretty good.
For my laundry room, I’m not going for high drama, so I chose a bright white for my space. There are no windows in here, so I have to take advantage of light walls, especially since I painted the ceilings black in here for an industrial look. This room is not a polished finished-out space, so I’m trying to make it as nice as possible, working with what I’ve got. You can see a stencil that I’m adding on this wall that will create some drama to this end of the laundry room.
I taped off the baseboards getting ready to paint. I chose Sherwin-Williams Alabaster for my white walls and trim. It will freshen up this space so much and with my gray and white striped floors, it will be so fun and snappy.
So, that’s the start to my final phase of the laundry room. It’s going to be so fun and cute in here now. I’ll be showing you the finished space soon on the washer/dryer side and it’s going to be a dramatic change, let me tell you! I’ve got big plans for hiding my ductwork too, so can’t wait to show you that.
I hope you’ll check out the new Sherwin-Williams color selection tools that are available to you on their website. They are a great company, and I love working with their paints.

I find color inspiration from all the blogs I read. 🙂
I always start with an inspiration piece for a room. Sometimes that’s fabric, a picture or something that means a lot to me. Then I pull colors from that piece and use it to decorate the room.
I enjoy looking at new homes to see what decorators have done. Sometimes they take a very conservative neutral approach but usually I can figure out what the hot new colors are. A couple of years ago I saw a new home decorated in gray and yellow – various versions – throughout the house and I have used that in three upstairs rooms. I used gray and teal as well as gray and yellow.
I decide what type of feel I want in that particular room: dramatic, relaxing, fun, etc. Then I look thru magazines or most often, just go to stores and look for something that I’d like to use in that room. When I find the comforter, vase, lamp, whatever, that speaks to me for the room, I know what color to target on. Then I go from there, finding colors or variations of a color to use in the room.
I love to pick my colors from nature!

Hi, Rhoda,
My intuition leads me to look around the natural world for colors and textures that make me say “oooh”. Then, I look at blogs to see what others may have done with the colors/patterns I’m thinking of. Thanks for the chance to win Sherwin Williams products – love using them.

I find color inspiration in nature and the various seasons.
Thanks for the opportunity!
I love finding inspiration in nature; bird’s tiny eggs, flowers, newly hatched goslings & ducklings taking their first swim. Gorgeous & endless palette!
I’m excited about the porch and floor paint. After 2 years of walking on the bare concret slab; I am going to check in to this. Only problem is I have cracks in the slab too, so I’m not sure how much good it will do. Any suggestions?
I find inspiration everywhere, blogs, magazines, nature, you name it!
I get color inspiration from different things. For exteriors, I often go out and take pictures of other houses in other cities that I like. On the current house that requires paint and lots of it, I have a designated color that was approved by the Historical Society for a past owner. If I want to change it, I have to get permission.
On interiors, I often find fabrics I like and/or pictures in magazines or books. That has inspired me more than I can say. Right now, I’m thinking of changing the upstairs and am trying to decide what color will work best. I don’t like the Dunmore Cream that a stager selected, so I am thinking of doing what I like which is yellow or possibly going green. So I could really use some paint help.
I’ve noticed that Sherwin Williams is really coming on strong with color, and I have seen a number of people online with rooms done in SW paint that I really like.
You did a great job on your floor, Rhoda, and I can’t wait to see the finished walls.
XO,
Sheila
I tend to look at nature for inspiration. I found the perfect gray looking at the sky on an overcast day.
I find lots of inspiration from nature and also from blogs that I read. I actually used your color recommendation of Whole Wheat by SW for my bonus room and have loved it!
I usually find inspiration in nature and gravitate towards the greens. What takes me further is the color combinations actually used by others or suggested by the paint brochures. It may have started with a green but then went in a totally different direction as I see how color is used together. Ah, and then there’s fabric….
I usually find inspiration from magazines. When I see a combination that I love, I cut out the pictures. Thanks so much.
I love Sherwin Williams paint – such high quality! We painted our main floor area Mindful Grey and our kitchen Mink and the colors are gorgeous! Love your makeover Rhoda – what a transformation so far!
I find inspiration through diy blogs and pinterest. One link leads to another and I find myself online for hours!
Lately I get my color inspiration from blogs! I painted my dining room the same Sherwin Williams Aria Ivory that Miss Mustard Seed loves so much.
Hi Rhoda, Your laundry room is looking wonderful! I get my inspiration from nature, especially the sea. My favorite colors are the blues and greens of the ocean.
xx,
Sherry
I love to get color inspiration from different design blogs and from a few magazines (Southern Living, Country Living, etc). Thanks!
