I had not been back to Ruby’s lake house since the day that demolition began a few months ago. They showed up with big bulldozers and took the old house completely down to the ground and I had not seen the property since that day. It was such a thrill to go with Ruby recently to see the progress on the lake house and wow has it changed. If you missed the story that I did a few months ago about Ruby’s dream come true lake house, take a look at it. I’m so thrilled for my friends that they are getting the chance to build and live on the lake now, after downsizing from a huge home in a subdivision.
For those of you who want the floor plan of Ruby’s lake house, it’s the Merveille Vivante floor plan. Click that link to go to the website. The plan is 1400 s.f. and they enlarged it to 1,800 s.f.
This is the sight that awaited us and it was so exciting to get out and see it all in person. It has come a long, long ways since that day I was there.
It’s going to be such a cute Craftsman style bungalow, with the exterior being a mix of siding, shingles, and stone. It will be such a beautiful cottage on the lake. You will notice a single garage to the left that goes into the basement area. It’s just going to be extra drive-in storage and the 2 car garage will be where they park cars. Lots of storage in this house.
The detached garage is huge and will be such a nice storage area too, with room in the attic for storage. You’ll notice the roofline from the house to the garage isn’t straight across. Because of the way the land is sloped, the builder had to do this. I’m sure there was a good reason why it had to be done. Ruby said he is putting in some sort of column detail on the walkway that will help disguise that.
Garage roof line details.
Sometimes you have to deal with things and not get too hung up on every little detail. I’m sure it will be beautiful when finished and a pretty breezeway will unite the house with the garage.
Exterior details of the house. There is also a full walk-out basement with lots of room too. They will have plenty of room in this house. The floor in the basement is concrete and she and I might be tackling a paint or stain treatment in there. After getting an estimate of over $3K for laminate flooring in the basement, I told her we can make that concrete look great without spending that much money and she can allocate that money elsewhere.
The cute front porch will be so fun to decorate. I can hardly wait to get to that part with Ruby!
Front door details. Board and batten siding on the outside of the porch adds a nice look.
Windows are all in place.
This is standing in the greatroom looking back towards the front door. The fireplace will be covered with stacked rock on the bottom. Ruby of course, is working with a budget, so she has had to be somewhat careful about the finishes and amenities that are added in here. Building a house can be challenging that way, as everyone has a budget and there are pricepoints all over the place. I’ve been helping her pick carpet, hardwood floors, cabinets, granite, bathroom tile, lighting and more. It’s going to be a beautiful house when it’s all done, even if she doesn’t get all the higher end things she would like. Some of that can be done later. I suggested she paint all her common areas White Dove by Benjamin Moore since I’ve seen that used so successfully and she is doing that. She will go back later and add color to the bedrooms and a few other areas. But, White Dove will be a beautiful backdrop for everything.
She also added a planked wall as a detail feature in the dining room and it is going to be beautiful white washed in there.
She’s getting all her lighting from Progressive Lighting and she went in and picked everything out with the help of the designer at the store. But she wanted to run everything by me to get my approval and we went in there and I got to see everything. I loved all her choices and this fixture will hang in the dining area. Progressive Lighting has some gorgeous fixtures! Of course, she had a budget to work with on lighting too, so had to keep that in mind.
Those budgets sure do get in the way sometimes, don’t they?
Another look at the dining room with planked wall. I can visualize it all now. I can’t wait to get to the decorating part!
She went with creamy cabinets with a little glaze details on the doors, with an ebony island. She added a pretty farmhouse sink too. Of course, I’ll show all those details later on when she gets moved in. These pics are limited.
The master bedroom is in the back right corner with 3 large windows which will look at the cove of the lake that they are sitting on. Right now, there is no water down there, they always pull back the water this time of year.
I helped Ruby pick out tile for the master bath a few weeks ago from Floor and Décor and this is how it turned out. Nice and neutral, it will be a beautiful bathroom.
I forgot to take a pic of the greatroom facing the lake, but it has 2 big sets of French doors which will open to this glorious porch. They haven’t decided yet if it will be screen in or open, but I have a feeling it will be eventually screened. They may move in and finish things later around the house. She had a gorgeous screened porch in their other house, so has plenty of furniture for this space too. There is also a concrete covered deck below that will be great for entertaining too. There will also be a nice bathroom down there for lake use. This is going to be a beautiful and functional home to live in.
Upstairs, there are 2 bedrooms to the left of the front door and this is the guest bath.
Love the doors that were chosen too, such a pretty cottage style to them.
So, that’s progress on Ruby’s lake house! I knew you would enjoy seeing how the house is coming along and we can’t wait until they get in the house and get settled. It’s happening pretty soon and they hope by mid to late February to be moving in! How exciting this project is!
I think she’s done a nice job with a limited budget. Some ppl may not look at her budget as ‘limited’. Seems to be a functional and visually appealing layout. Love the plank wall in the dining area. Can’t say that I like the tile in the bathroom at all though – reminds me of my Italian grandmothers bathroom. Think I would have preferred white subway tile placed vertically rather than the standard horizontal subway layout we generally see. The accent tile strip is nice however. I did see a couple of things on the exterior of the house that stood out to me that made me think the contractor didn’t have his eye on the ball. We’ll see, at the end, if he caught those items. Looking forward to seeing the finished product. Congratulations to Ruby for making her dream come true.
I can’t wait to see the finished home. To me, this would be a dream come true. I like everything I see!!
Ruby is one very lucky lady! It sure will be a dream house. I can’t wait to see how it turns out. It would be great if you could get some pix of it all done right before move-in, and then after with all the pretties in place! So exciting.
It’s going to be a beauty!! Love that planked wall and love her kitchen!!
Thank you! That was fun. The kitchen cabinets are lovely.
The planked wall is my favorite! Thanks for taking us along on her house journey.
Such a great tour, I cannot wait to see it further along too. The kitchen looks gorgeous so far!
I really loved the pictorial tour of Ruby’s new Lake house. Loved the kitchen and planked diningroom! I look forward to seeing it all after it is finished……I am sure it will be stunning.
What a dream come true!!
Everything looks fantastic so far! Can’t wait to see it finished. Do you happen to know the model number of her dining room light fixture? I just love it
I’d love to know, as well.
Rhoda, I love this home!! Cottage style with a traditional twist is my favorite look. Love charming homes and this one is a real charmer, for sure!!!

It will be a beautiful house. I especially like the kitchen cabinets & cottage-style doors.
Fun to read about a house in progress! Great call I think about the white interior paint; that will let Ruby see just how the natural light “works” at all times and seasons before she selects wall colors. Hope she does screen the back porch; there is nothing finer than a screen porch (with a blue ceiling) in a GA summer!
Will be following the “column” or whatever her contractor does re the uneven roof line. That’s a fine example of why one should ALWAYS have a registered residential architect review plans before you build or remodel; that could have been avoided. Contractors don’t have that training/experience.
Know 2015 will be great for Ruby and her family in their new home! What a gift!
What color did you suggest for the trim to go with White Dove?
I thought she should use White Dove for trim and walls, that’s a great look. There was a communication gap between her and her contractor and he painted the interior trim an almond color, but it does look good, so I think she will enjoy it after all. I haven’t seen it in person yet, but can’t wait to get back.
We recently moved from Georgia to Missouri and building a new home. We had chosen a different floor plan until we came across this beautiful home. We knew it was meant to be when we saw it was built in Cartersville where my husband taught for several years! We absolutely love everything about this home! We are wanting a home around 1800 sq ft on a basement as well. Would you happen to know the dimensions of the family room, kitchen, and dining room? We think the size of these rooms are absolutely perfect from what we can see.
Hi, Andrea, I don’t know the exact dimensions of those rooms.
Hi Rhoda,
Do you happen to have updates on this house? My husband and I are hoping to build in a few months and love this house.
Hi, Julia, I haven’t done anything in awhile on Ruby’s house, but here are all the posts I did:

Hi Rhonda!
My fiancé and I totally love this house! We’re in the process of looking for house layouts that will fit our lifestyle and the property we have. Do you know if the house plans are available or who they went through? We would love to see more!
Hi, Courtney, here’s another post about the house and you will see a link to the plans at the bottom of the post. Their builder modified the plans and made this house a bit bigger than the original.https://southernhospitalityblog.com/ruby-moved-in-the-lake-cottage/
