Raised in South Georgia’s farm country, cookbook author, Gena Knox has a long history with the land and Southern cooking. Her newly released cookbook, Southern My Way: Simple Recipes, Fresh Flavor, features more than 250 pages of seasonal recipes (100+ recipes), streamlined for busy lives and accompanied by full-color photographs that portray a lifelong love affair with Southern food and culture. Gena shares her modern take on the region’s culinary specialties.
Says Gena,
“I want home cooks to read my book and feel as though they shared the same culinary experiences that I did as a child, like riding through the fields to check on crops with my father or making homemade biscuits alongside my mother in the kitchen.”
I love that!
Sounds very similar to the way I grew up. We didn’t ride through the fields, but walked through my parent’s garden plenty of times, freshly picked veggies at the ready.
With a contemporary spin on Southern cooking, Gena’s recipes rely on fresh, seasonal ingredients to make them work with little trouble. And guess what? We have ONE cookbook to give away to one of my readers. If you’d like a chance at this beautiful hardback cookbook, just leave a comment telling me your favorite dish to make for your family.
That’s it! I’ll leave the giveaway open until Sunday evening and choose a winner then.

Oh, I hope I win!!
My family’s favorite is tacos. My favorite, on the other hand, is the meal that I make once a year–right at the end of summer. Totally unhealthy, but so, so good. Fried eggplant, fried okra, fried cornbread, purple hull peas, and slices of fresh red warm tomatoes. Sometimes, to gild the lily, there is silver queen corn, too. Oh, it makes me long for August! I love, love, love this meal.

The family loves homemade pizza! And this southern girl would love this beautiful book.

Ham and vegetable soup, just like my Mama makes it. Lots of ham, corn, butter beans, tomatoes, string beans, potatoes, cabbage, etc. Great on a cold, Winter day.
Leila says
Why fried chicken and pimento cheese sandwiches and deviled eggs. Chocolate cake tops off the family favorites that spells southern with a S .

One of my favorite recipes to make is my grandmother’s (Meme) macaroni pie. It’s basically her southern way of making macaroni and cheese that you cook in the oven instead of on the stove. For the longest time my grandparents lived in South Carolina and the would come down every Christmas to visit us in Florida. Whenever they would come my sisters and I would beg Meme to make us macaroni pie. It’s sinfully delicious and my ultimate comfort food for myself and my family!

One of my family’s frequent requests is what we refer to as vanilla biscuits though the original recipe was called Mary’s sweet drop biscuits. I misplaced the recipe for awhile which was catastrophic since I tried to recreate the recipe but just couldn’t get the taste right. Then there was a great celebration when I found the recipe card tucked into the pages of a cookbook! Now both of my adult daughters have a copy of the recipe so we have a back up if it ever gets lost again. 🙂
