Yardsales and Cornbread

What?  You didn’t know there was a connection between the two?

Now if that title didn’t grab your attention right in here, I don’t know what would.  Who doesn’t love cornbread?  And yardsales?  You know I do.  So, when a friend tells you she is having a yardsale, you need to show up.  This is my friend who had the sale the same day that I did. I got to preview on Friday and when I got there, THESE were waiting for me.  My friend, Debbie, has a set of these cast iron cornstick cornbread bakers and I’ve told myself if I ever found some, I’d snap them up.  And snap them up I did, for $4.  And they’re already seasoned.  They make some nice crispy cornbread sticks that are to die for. Got all excited and tried them out, but I filled them too full, so they didn’t just pop out of there like they are supposed to.  Next time, I won’t fill them so full.  But, they were yummy.  Really yummy, even if I did have to dig them out a bit.  Here’s the  buttermilk cornbread recipe I like to make.  Very Southern.   Found this one in our local paper and it’s really good and authentic, just like my mama makes.

Did you know if you don’t have buttermilk on hand, you can add about a tablespoon of vinegar to your milk and it does the same thing?  Just a tip for you!

Edited to Add: Look who has Lodge cornstick cast iron pans:  Walmart and several others online too, in case you have to have one!

One more thing you should never pass up, a BIG face watch for $1.  All it needed was a new battery.  I love that I can see this without squinting.

Some of you will know what I mean! 🙂 And the rest of you, your time is coming.

The winner of Miss Lucy’s Monograms giveaway is lucky #42  Sabrina!  Big congrats, I’ve already emailed her the exciting news.  And if you didn’t win, we will be having another giveaway with Miss Lucy’s in December and it will be a fabulous prize!

Rhoda, you could do a whole post with a poll on cornbread preferences alone. I love the cast iron cornstick baker. I have one, too, passed down from my Grandmother. Because it’s hers, it makes the cornbread taste better ; – ) !

Rhoda, I have the same cornbread pan. My father found it…in a yard sale…and gave it to me years ago. 🙂 If you spray the entire thing with nonstick cooking oil spray, including the spaces on the top, in between, even if you overfill it, they will pop right out. And, they come out so crunchy good!

    Hi Rhoda!
I so enjoy your blog and read it everyday! I too, found some cornstick pans at an antique store and rushed home to use them. I found out the hard way that the pans were NOT seasoned! We had cornstick crumbs for supper that night! Since then they have been seasoned and make the bestest cornsticks! Thanks for sharing your blog with us!

I get tickled everytime I see those cornbread pans – they remind me of my grandma’s house so much. She always had a bunch of them floating around.

Yes, I know what you mean about the big watch face. I am a nurse and the girls I work with tease me about my wrist”clock”. Ha. They will need a big one soon enough. Your decorations in the holiday look beautiful. I can’t wait to see more.

    Rhoda-
Just “found” your blog and I LOVE it. Makes me miss home & the South so much! I’ve been living in Phoenix for the past 7 years – so I’m displaced … but once a GRIT, always a GRIT. Take care and I’ll be reading faithfully. By the way, I am now hungry for cornbread. 🙂

Mike tells me my time is coming, too, for the big faced watch. If he even catches me squinting just a bit I get a big, “A HA! I told you so!!” 😉

I’m lucky to have the corn stick pan that belonged to my mother. Need to use it sometime soon.
