After checking out several places for kitchen cabinets, I have a winner, but you already know that.
IKEA it is! I’ve decided on the Adel door style, simple Shaker style in off-white. Seeing them in so many places lately has really confirmed that I’m making a great choice, especially after finding them in the Southern Living Idea House in Senoia recently. They are beautiful and they are affordable!
Affordable is good.
Here’s the Southern Living house kitchen featuring MY cabinets. You can see all the pics I took of the house at the link above.

I thought I’d share some of my favorite kitchen inspiration pics that I found over on Pinterest. The verdict is in. I definitely am in love with white cabinets. Almost every kitchen I saved is white, so that tells me where my inspiration lies. The best way to figure out what you love is to keep saving pics. It will be obvious in no time.
OH, and Shaker style white cabinets is what keeps jumping out at me too. I adore their classic design style.

These simple Shakers really have my attention, so that is what I’m going for.

Look at this beautiful white kitchen, with soaring ceilings and dark floors. Oh, be still my heart. I don’t have soaring ceilings, but I have some pretty awesome dark floors.

Now, this one has blue gray on the bottom and it is particularly pretty too. Love the open shelves. I have plans for 2 large open shelves in my kitchen. I love open shelves, but don’t think I want to commit to a whole wall of them. They are beautiful though!
In fact, here are my shelves. I bought them almost 2 years ago, not long before I moved from Birmingham and they are stored away waiting for me. I’m going to stain them dark and hang them up on my white subway tiled walls. Aren’t they yummy? They came from that fantastic salvage shop in Cullman, AL, Southern Accents. Wish I was closer, I’d hit that place again.

Another beautiful Shaker style cabinet pic. Those drapes are snazzy too.
White Shaker, dark floors, marble countertop and backsplash. This is one gorgeous look! I probably won’t do a farmhouse sink, nor marble, but I hope to get something similar. Fairly positive I’ll go with white subway tiles on my backsplash.
Another one for visuals.
This kitchen above is just breath taking to me. It is gorgeous, yet completely doable. I love how that window is trimmed out. Sure love that subway tile!
This real life kitchen renovation really got me excited. They did a fabulous job on updating their kitchen and did the work themselves. Very inspiring! GO over and check out the before and afters on this one, you won’t believe the difference. Goes to show what some DIY magic can do!
One more that I just love, I’ll have a mix of glass fronts and Shaker doors. This is a good visual for a dark sink, which I happen to love.

The kitchen above is just beautiful, love the Shaker cabinets, subway tile with gray grout and the dark sink. I’m pretty sure I’m going with a dark sink again this time either in black or dark brown.
And this one has wood shelves similar to what I’m doing against a wall of white subway tile. Love, love it! I sure am glad classic white subway tile is affordable. My shelves are 4 feet long.

Here’s another fabulous IKEA kitchen that I’ve been following over at House Tweaking. They are doing a great job with their house renovation, you can click that link to see it all.
I’m planning to get granite again for my kitchen countertops, so hoping to fit that in the budget. I will probably get a similar color to my former kitchen, Napoli, which goes well with white cabinets. Still have to narrow down those choices too.
I still need to score a stainless steel stove, so will be looking for a deal on that too.
Here’s a little design board that I put together with the choices that I most likely will stick with:
- Adel cabinets from Ikea (done deal)
- White subway tile with gray grout
- Oil rubbed bronze knobs and cup pulls for the drawers
- Lightish granite
- Cafe Brown or Charcoal Silgranite sink
- Moen Annabelle pulldown faucet in oil rubbed bronze
- Addie Ballard Designs pendant in green
- Loving the gray/cream chevron indoor/outdoor rug from Ballard’s with this Adel kitchen that Ikea featured, might have to get this runner in my kitchen too.
I’m so excited to get my little kitchen up and running. It’s fun to plan one from scratch, but a little scary too! I planned a kitchen from scratch back in 1985 and hated my cabinet choice 10 years later. I hope that doesn’t happen this time around.
How about you? What color cabinets are your favorite? Are you a white lover like me or does dark float your boat?

Great choices!! Are you sure you don ‘t need a double sink? What does your mom thInk?

Love your inspiration pics! We did white cabinets too; we wanted IKEA but painting unfinished oak cabinets from Home Depot in white gloss ended up being more affordable for us (though much more time-consuming). We got our range from the Sears Outlet on Cobb Parkway/Roswell Rd. It was a floor model in perfect condition and was something like $200 less than if we’d bought new at Home Depot! We lucked out that they had the exact model we wanted, but it’s a good place to look, just in case.
In our next house I definitely want open shelving, and can’t wait to see how yours turns out. Good luck!

I love the clean and crisp look of the white kitchens. So chic! I also love those pendant lights. I was in the Ballard Outlet in Roswell the other day and was eying them myself! Your choices look great!

Oh my! Thank you Rhoda for the encouragement and sharing our kitchen renovation. It’s been a tantrum-filled day with my two year olds and this was a sweet nap-time blessing to see our kitchen in your post. 🙂
thanks!!

Love, love your choices, Rhoda! And yes, they are certainly “on-trend” for right now, but they are also CLASSIC choices that will always be in style, whether they are super trendy or not. You will never, ever tire of the finishes you’ve chosen for your kitchen!

It is going to be wonderful, Rhoda. I am so happy for you.
White. Definitely white for me. Our kitchen got a much-needed lift last year. http://howsweetthesound.typepad.com/my_weblog/our-home/page/2/

Hi Rhonda!
I have been celebrating, virtually with you on your hardware floors! They are GORGEOUS!!! Have a question… What would you or your Dad or other professionals say about needing to change out old, (1980’S blah wood) including doors that are showing alot of marks & scratches. (from big puppies).
I have SOOOOO many questions!

Have you thought about sanding them and painting them? Also, my mom’s house has beautiful hickory cabinets/woodworks in it. When she had to redo the kitchen due to a hot water leak under the sink, she seriously thought about painting the cabinets for something different because they looked so “old.” Since dad’s health would not let him do it, the contractor they used suggested simply refacing them, and now they look beautifully brand new. It would depend on your wood though. When my home was redone, the previous owners told me it was all brown, brown, brown, nasty brown. They painted everything (woodworks, doors, inside brick, all of it) because the wood was not good enough to sand down, varnish and stain. There are so many options out there to redo them, but it may be just easier to replace them too.
Good luck!

Love, love the design board and seeing this all come together. I saw the S.L. 2012 Idea House in Senoia, GA and thought of your kitchen which will be at least that gorgeous if not more so! Now, I need to come up when you get ready to do the subway tile and get a hands on tutorial! I’m loving this look and need to re-do my kitchen. Do you mind if I copy your idea? Imitation is the best form of flattery – right? Also, love that rug and those rustic shelves! We need to take a road trip to Alabama and go to Southern Accents! Your kitchen is going to look great! What – no picture of all those Ikea boxes you have in your garage holding the gorgeous Ikea Cabinets??? 🙂 Don’t be fooled by the price or quality of Ikea cabinets….just one look at the Southern Living house and in the showroom sold me! Those are not cheap cabinets at all! And, it is the rage these days….white cabinets. It’s the new, fresh updated look! Paired with granite and the sink – it’s a winning and stainless steel appliances…it’s a winning combination!! Glad you’re back from the big city….rested and ready to go. Good luck with the install and putting the cabinets together! Pack some patience. Little by little and just think…it’s not everyday that we upgrade our kitchen cabinets. Maybe once in 15-20+ years?

Congratulations on the new kitchen! We installed Ikea cabinets four years ago, and still love them. Word to the wise: the screws look like Phillips, but they’re actually Pozidriv (look closely and you can see the subtle differences). A Phillips screwdriver will work on them, but a Pozidriv screwdriver/bit will work soooo much better. I don’t know if Pozidriv is carried in the local big box stores or not (we ordered ours online from Lee Valley Hardware), but it’s worth a little effort to get the best tool for the job. Have fun!

White cabinets are so fresh looking and can handle 🙂 many styles of hardware..mine are still the oak shelving and chose to update with hardware and have taken some doors out for that open look. Good Luck, your choices are phenom. Love & Blessings, Lady Delores.

All of your choices sound great. I agree that subway tile is trendy but it has been around for a very long time that’s why is it considered classic. With white cabinets, you can add color with your accent pieces and even paint them later and then go back to white if you’d like.
Shaker style cabinetry is also classic. I think you’ll love your kitchen.

It’s going to be stunning, Rhoda! I have a white shaker-style kitchen with gray walls (and turquoise accents), and I love it. Can’t wait to see how it all comes together! ~Kerri, A Pop of Pretty

I to LOVE the house and home one!!! I have had plans to redo my cabinets now for years and never have done it. We stained them the same color we stained all the other woods in this house and I am sick of the stain after 23 years of it. 😉 I am so scared I wont like the cabinets once I paint them but I saw a pic of something like the house and home one and flipped out over it awhile back. I think I would really like it and it looks like they may have used a glaze on them. Not for sure about that though. Anyway hubby has retired now so I would have him under foot so to speak IF I did decide to go with the paint for them. ALSO I am having lots of trouble with the paint being nicked off the stained things I already painted and I sanded them before I painted them and I am almost positive I primed them as well. Don’t want to have that to contend with on the cabinets. I might have to do some reading on just HOW to go about painting over stained cabinets. lol

Although I never got around to doing anything with the cabinets that came with my old house, I did do a white subway tile backsplash which gave it a small facelift, and I’m a huge fan of the look and it was so easy to keep clean for me anyway! I had dark counters with my subway tiles, though – loved the contrast. Just the new counters and backsplash along with some hardware made the kitchen feel newer. For me, a lot of that I think was from the classic subway tiles. I’ll be doing them again one day!
I’m not sure I’d go all white personally, but it’s a striking look. Looks like you have great inspiration and plans!

I love white, dark and everything inbetween! It’s a good thing I don’t have to choose right now! I love all the Kitchens above, and can’t wait to see your new kitchen!

I’m not sure but that the gray you are using so much of is a fad. I follow several decorating blogs and shop, and I am seeing gray absolutely everywhere. For things that can’t be changed very easily, such as grout, I don’t think I would use gray. It will probably be out of style again next year or the year after, and everyone using gray for floor coverings, grout, etc. will be stuck with it. Just a thought…

What a wonderful collection of inspiration kitchens, Rhoda! Great choice on the cabinets and other elements. I’ve had my white shaker kitchen cabinets for 8 years and still absolutely love them. The island is walnut shaker style for contrast and I have glass mosaic tiles in watery aquas and greens. Those Addie pendants you’ve selected are gorgeous!

Rhoda…I am sure that your kitchen is going to be a showplace of gorgeousness!!…Truly love those Ikea cabinets…I saw a quartz marble like countertop at Ikea that I fell in love with…I am hoping that one day I can replace my granite on the island for the marble for a different look!
Just by reading your great plans for your kitchen, it will be amazing and I am sure you are so very excited!…So happy for you!
